A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

I know a trick to make a man's colors show / If he sees something he wants, tell him no

The city looked like something out of an impressionist piece of art as the sun set, haze and smog turning the once-brilliant colors into gray imitations of themselves. Eliza leaned forwards in the mirror and slipped in her earrings, an understated set of diamond studs, before leaning back and checking her hair. Though she'd been called a beauty in her own time, she had to admit that the modern convenience of cosmetics and hair products made it a lot easier to look good. Content her curly hair had been tamed and her makeup wasn't smudged in the least, she grabbed her small black clutch and left her apartment, locking the door on her way out. Though she was under the protection of the Crypt, that didn't mean your average, run-of-the-mill criminal wouldn't try to break in.
It was unlikely they would even get that far, she thought as she walked out of the lobby past the doorman Ted who she gave a small, polite smile to. He did his job well enough she didn't worry about petty criminals bothering her. Hunters, however... She stepped out into the fading light of dusk, skin prickling in discomfort at the last rays of sunlight piercing the haze, and walked to the curb. Her car sat idling, the condo's valet standing beside it with a bored expression.
When he saw her approach, he made a point of opening the door and bowing slightly, no doubt aware of how the residents of that particular complex tipped. "Thank you...Aaron," she said, reading the askance nametag pinned to his shirt. "I appreciate it." She slipped him a tip and sat down, closing the door and sighing. Her car was one of her favorite things in the world - a Porsche 918 Spyder convertible with a matte black finish and an engine that purred like a big cat.
It was certainly an auspicious car, and not made for discretion, but Eliza didn't want discretion. When she got behind the wheel of her car and shifted through the gears, she finally felt like she'd found something that could compare to her own physical prowess. Eliza ran her hands over the leather wheel before shifting into 1st and sliding into traffic, wishing not for the first time traffic didn't exist.
She needed to speak with Taiga, but the strange man seemed to prefer working at his tea shop than staying down the Crypt. It was a preference that Eliza didn't understand, but she also didn't have to understand it. As long as he offered her the Crypt's protection from Hunters and the like, she'd be content paying her dues until the end of time. She had been too absorbed in her thoughts to realized she'd pulled up to the shop and had to cut sharply across traffic in order not to miss it, cursing loudly.
Pulling into a parking spot, Eliza paid the meter, silently dared anything to touch her care, and entered Hanabi Heart Tea shop. The bell jingled when she walked it, the sound giving her a dull headache she hoped a "tea" would solve.
"I'll take an 80% love, but I love you 100%," she said to the cashier when she got to the front of the line with slightly gritted teeth. How Taiga could be as sadistic and dangerous as he was but simultaneously require those in his Crypt to say such a juvenile, embarrassing thing was beyond her. "And tell Taiga Eliza's here to see him," she added, walking towards a table without waiting for an answer.

Even though the break room at Hanami Heart wasn’t accessible to the public, it still retained the fluffy pink theme found in the main dining area. And in one cushioned chair, Taiga sat curled up with his phone in his lap, texting away to several people at once. From business inquiries to dating apps to cat games, he was busy at work even though he had a pink blanket draped over his shoulders. However, he slowed his typing when one of his employees walked over to him.
“Got a blood order, 80%, also an 'Eliza' is here to see you,” he said.
“Which one?” Taiga asked, his eyes still on the screen.
“Dunno, she walked away right after she said it.”
At that, Taiga laughed and hopped out of the chair, the blanket falling behind him before he picked it up and tossed it around him again. He closed his phone mid-text and began walking towards the back freezer.
“I know who it is, I can't believe I missed her order!" He said. He grabbed some gloves and added over his shoulder, "You keep pretty at the front. I'll take it to her."
With that, he wrapped the blanket around him before entering the freezer. Inside he grabbed a couple blood bags and a to-go cup. He poured the red liquid in and tossed the bags away before looking at the selection of cold teas in front of him, humming as he went over the options. Eventually he settled on a bright peach one and filled the rest of the cup up. He closed it before walking back out, trashing the gloves, and shivering a little. He tossed the blanket back on the chair before heading out to the main room. His eyes wandered until they landed on Eliza and he grinned as he skipped his way over.
“El-i-zaaa, you’re here!” Taiga sang. He paused in front of her table before pouting as he stared. “Or is that you? I’m not sure. If only there was a secret phrase to let me know it really is my Eliza, hmm.”
He loudly sighed as he tilted the cup back and forth, practically dangling it in front of her face. He leaned a hand on the table and added, “I’m waiting.”

Watching the pink pustule of a man prance towards her was almost enough to turn Eliza's stomach, but she managed to school the scowl from her face until he began to toy with her, waving her drink about like a deranged animal. "You really are sick, Taiga. I need you to know that." Her tone was bored, but her expression was piqued. "If I didn't know better, I'd say it's a lack of affection as I child that made you choose the phrase 'I love you 100%' as the go-to," she said, snatching the drink out of his hand with supernatural speed.
She took a long drag from the cup, drawing back as the taste of peach filled her mouth, and she grimaced. "I assumed you'd make the rest black tea," she said, waving a hand towards the chair in front of her. for him to sit "Peach doesn't mix well, in my opinion." Still, it didn't stop her from taking a few more heady sips from her cup before sitting it down, her headache already receding. Unfortunately for her, there was another headache sitting right in front of her.
Her accent grew thicker as her annoyance rose, but she managed to keep herself from lapsing into French entirely. It seemed that in situations of high emotion her native-tongue came out, and when she spoke French, people around her tended to die. She pulled her light shawl more closely around her shoulders and forced herself to relax. He was the master of the Crypt, and like it or not she owed him her fealty. "What can I do for you? I hope it's nothing too laborious. I have a gala to attend tomorrow evening and I'd hate to be late."

The smile on his face didn’t waver at her words or the cup being snatched from his hand. In fact it only made him giggle as he slid into the seat next to her.
“Heehee! You still said it. I’ll take it,” he said. He put his elbows on the table and loosely interlocked his fingers together, letting his wrists fall to be parallel to the table. He lightly rested his chin on his fingers and chuckled again at her comment.
“Peach for my French peach oui oui,” he said as he watched her drink the liquid he provided. Oh how he loved his crypt members. It was thrilling to be so loved. And needed. Although he pretended to be shocked at her offer, raising an eyebrow at her next question and loudly gasping.
“Gala? And you didn’t invite me? How rude,” he said. He hummed a little at her proposition as he thought for a moment as if in deep thought. Ugh, I really should’ve made a drink for myself, I’m parched, were his actual thoughts. But he considered her words again and waved his hand.
“What makes you think I’m gonna make you do something? I’m just a nice person,” he said. He tilted his head and added, “Go ahead. Tell me. What were you thinking?”

"A nice person? Debatable," grumbled Eliza, eyes flashing for a moment as the blood his her system. "I was under the impression you needed me for some sort of cover-up situation up north? An overzealous youngling and unsavory investigation into the incident?" Disdain shown in her face at the lack of control, but she said nothing. It was an embarrassing part of coming to age as one of their kind, a part she wished they didn't have to deal with.
"It really is too bad we can't send younglings out of the city until they learn some decorum," she lamented, adjusting her scarf and checking her nails. "But you are the king, and all of that fanfare. Regardless, I'd appreciate it if you'd stop beating around the bush and just get to it. What do I need to do, and how do you want me to take care of it?"
She walked a fine line with Taiga between insolence and insubordination, but it was a line he'd let her walk so far. "It really is a beautiful night, and I'd like to have as much of it to myself as I can." While she came to Taiga for blood, the thrill of the hunt wasn't something a vampire easily forgot, and there was a thrill running in her veins that begged her to find a breathing target to feed from, soon.

Taiga pouted a little at her comment before his eyes widened a little as she continued.
“Oh? Who spilled the deets?” He said. He thought of a second at the possible suspects, but he wouldn’t be surprised if the information spread around the crypt. He didn’t mind at all if it meant people like Eliza came to him instead of the other way around. It made him feel important, and that he could play around with her. He brightened at the mention of the beautiful night and he chuckled.
“Ohoho so you want to take me on a date? I’m flattered, but you know I’m gay right?” He sighed as he leaned back and crossed his arms. “If I was even remotely into the lovely female gender, I’d be too powerful. It’s a shame really. I just like sucking guys off too much, don’t take it personally.”
He smiled as he bought out his time, stretching his hand out so his fingernails could drum on the table in front of him.
“Either way, this is the unsexiest date possible, but a crypt member fucked up. I already took care of him, but this youngling knows a bit too much about us and is leaving the most obvious trail possible,” he said. He paused his nail drumming to hold his hand out and observe his nails. He really needed a manicure. Would Eliza like manicures? Hmm...

"That's of no concern," replied Eliza, ignoring his penchant for the dramatic. "What matters is what you need of me. And no, a date is not a viable request." She added the last part with venom, cutting him off before he could even begin. "I could care less what you like to do, and who you like to do it with. Just get to the damn point, Taiga."
She pulled out her phone and began to type rapidly, ignoring her crypt leader until the distinct 'whoosh' of a sent text broke the silence. "So you want...what? Me to kill the youngling? Or clean up the trail? I'm good for either - you know that - but just spit it out and let me be done with you. You weren't considering coming with me, were you?" She sounded almost offended, but quickly corrected her expression into neutral distaste.

Taiga sighed and dropped his hand when Eliza shot down the idea of a date, and he crossed his arms. He pursed his lips before his jaw dropped open at Eliza pulling out her phone so, so pretentiously in front of him. They were having a conversation! Her sharp words didn’t help the situation either and he soon slammed his arms onto the table and buried his head into them.
“You hate me! I can’t believe you hate me~e!” He cried. He continued loudly sobbing into his arms, unbothered and even hoping that the people around would notice. After a few long seconds, he lifted his head and rested his chin on his forearms where he exposed a light smile. There were no signs of any tears having been shed.
“Why, I think it would be fun, don’t ya think?” He said. He straightened back up and rested his hands on the table, kicking his legs underneath his chair.
“Mmm not necessarily kill, but if they’re still causing trouble then yeah. But I do wanna try recruiting ‘em first before you start hacking away. Or would you like to talk to 'em?” He let out a loud, dreamy sigh as he added, “You have such a way with words Eliza.”

Eliza felt her sharp incisors knick her tongue as she kept from saying that might actually get her in trouble with her crypt leader, and instead waited until the theatricals were over. She ignored the concerned looks the other patrons offered, knowing that in NYC this was far from the strangest thing they'd see. "If you're quite done," she drawled, waiting for him to lift his head.
His proposal wasn't any more than she'd expected. If it was Taiga directly needing something done, there was about a 50%/50% chance he'd want to come along just for 'funsies' and he called it too frequently. "Fine, I don't care as long as we don't take any detours." She knew her leader's propensity for getting sidetracked and it lead to more work than it was worth. "I'll try to recruit first, and kill only as a final option. Is that satisfactory to you, Taiga?"
She felt like she hated the capricious man more often than not, but deep down she was grateful for him. After all, he let his vampires do pretty much whatever they wanted as long as it didn't bring attention to the lot of them. After running little better than feral for most of America's colonial period, it was a relief to have some semblance of order, as self-imposed and artificial as it might be.
"If we can finish early enough, I suppose I wouldn't be adverse to a late dinner with you, on your dime, of course." She quirked an eyebrow, an uncharacteristic display of levity, but soon returned to her resting, ehem, face. "I'm craving something fresh, if you catch my meaning. And I tend to find that good dinner is only matched by the company it is shared with."

Taiga was still anticipating Eliza to reject him, so he was pleasantly surprised when she agreed he could come along.
“Yay!” He cheered, throwing his arms into the air. Once he dropped his arms, he gasped as she continued before breaking out into a wide smile.
“Ooh! I get to see you flirt with them!” He sang. He giggled as he kicked his feet underneath him. The idea was far too amusing to pass up. He was fine with recruiting himself, but Eliza was offering, he wasn’t going to say no. As if he couldn’t be more surprised, he gasped at the dinner proposition, already extrapolating it to be similar to a date.
“Oh El-i-zaaa, you’re making me blush,” he said, cupping his own face. Wow, she was still attracted to him even though he said he was gay, he felt flattered. After his ego calmed down, he took a moment to think about the dinner some more.
“Fresh food huh?” He echoed, pursing his lips as he thought. What food was fresh…He brightened as he added, “Oh! I know this great sushi place that’s open 24 hours. We can’t have sex after but...nah I’m still pretty upset, but! We can look at cute guys! Or you know, whatever you’re into. But also cute guys!”

"I said I would try to recruit them, Taiga, not flirt with them. I'm not interested in younglings that can't hold their bloodlust in check, and I'm certainly not interested in boys." She placed heavy emphasis on the last word, rolling her eyes. "Taiga, sometimes je souhaite que tu tombes mort," she said, lapsing into French as she delicately rested her head in her hand.
She inhaled deeply, using the moment to calm her rising ire and force her features neutral. "I was thinking of something more red and bloody," she said through a gritted smile, pointedly looking at her tea cup. "But I suppose sometimes dinner is best enjoyed alone." She gave a shrug and moved to stand, impatient to reclaim her night and be done with the Crypt's business.
"Now, shall we?" She motioned towards the exit, brushing imperceptible wrinkles from her skirt and readjusting her scarf. "After you, Dominus." She gave a shallow bow of her head and moved to follow behind him, tossing her cup in the trash as she passed. She withdrew her keys from her small handbag and clicked open the doors to her car. "You know where we're going?"

Taiga whined at Eliza shooting down his ideas, moaning, “Aww…” What’s wrong with boys? He thought they were cute, being one himself. At the French, his eyebrows knitted together and he scrunched up his nose.
“Huh?” He said. He pursed his lips as he thought about what it could mean before adding, “Well sometimes 僕は彼のおちんちんを舐めたい。”
He sighed before raising an eyebrow at “red and bloody.” Steaks then? He wasn’t sure of any places that would be open, but he wasn’t opposed to the idea. However, he sputtered when Eliza suggested dining alone and he scrambled out of his chair.
“Wha—No~o don’t say that,” he said. He pouted but his spirits rose again when she held the door for him and bowed. He hummed as he walked and he let out an “Ooh” at the car before turning to answer her question.
“Of course, I know everything. It’s just Upper East Side, last spotted around Rockefeller University. Probably camping out somewhere there,” he said.
He immediately went over to the front passenger seat and plopped into the seat as if the car was his own and fastened his seatbelt.

"Upper East Side? ...the fool. Of all the places to kill so openly, why not do it in some distasteful slum? Why must they insist on mucking about in the nice parts of town?" Eliza mostly grumbled to herself as she slid into the driver's seat, narrowing her eyes at Taiga's indelicate jump into the car. However, she said nothing about it and instead pushed the button and started the car with a low hum.
"Is there any trouble we should expect? I know you think surprises are something fun, but I prefer not to get ambushed by some hunters proclaiming they're doing God or man's work in killing us." She flipped through radio channels on her steering wheel as she wove in and out of traffic, counting herself lucky they had hit a slight lull.
She glanced at Taiga out of the corner of her eye, a silent question hidden within. Though she'd lived and worked under him for over a century, Eliza knew little about the Count and found herself slightly curious. In the realm of immortals, knowledge was power and she found she knew very little. "Taiga," she began, her accented voice somewhat uncharacteristically hesitant, "I know asking one's age is a faux pas, but I find myself curious. What century were you turned?"

Taiga snickered a little as he listened to her ramble before pausing to consider her question.
“I don’t think so. They probably think that of us, considering the whole crypt image. Holy blood or whatever,” he said. He had his head pointed out the window to watch all the pretty cars and lights pass by, but he turned back to Eliza at her next question. His eyes widened a little in surprise before his face relaxed into a smirk.
“Oh? Well the Edo period, obviously,” he said. He wondered if he could keep messing with her, but eventually he gave way to a laugh. “I’m kidding, I’m not that old. I was turned last century, 1940’s. You can call me baby if you want.”
Sure he wasn’t the oldest vampire alive, but he also knew his strengths. One being that he didn’t lose his mind to time, yet he was experienced enough to cover his tracks. Everyone older than him were just old farts anyway. He turned his head towards Eliza and looked her up and down.
“Why, when were you turned? I’m guessing, mm, five hundred years ago,” he said.

You can call me baby if you want. "I do not want," she said emphatically, shaking her head at the creepy thought. "While it might have been a faux pas for me to ask your age, it's a downright war crime to ask a lady hers," she said with a haughty air, ignoring the fact that he had gotten quite close to the truth. "Suffice to say that I'm old enough to know that the capricious way you live your life will be your downfall some day, mark my words."
It wasn't a threat and she hoped he didn't take it that way, but rather a word of advice. "We're nearly there," she said, turning on her signal and pulling off the road. The area wasn't well-lit, partially explaining why the attack had taken place there. "So, what are we looking for?" she asked, unbuckling her seatbelt and looking at Taiga.
