A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

"I would assume a library," she said, pulling out her phone to google one. "Since I have not been here. I didn't travel a lot as a child, being poor." Diana scrolled for a minute, comparing library locations to their station.
"We can go to the Newberry," she said after a moment. "It has a lot of historical documents. I was an English major at college, but I know my way around a library." When he nodded his assent, she directed them to the nearest public transport. As they rode, she pulled out her copy of Pride and Prejudice and lost herself in the pages, her features softening as she read.
Once they had disembarked and the book was back in her backpack, she led him into the library and parked herself in front of a computer, searching for titles of books that may be useful. Out came the ratty notebook, and she scribbled down a list in messy handwriting. "You look for these," she said, pointing him in a general direction. "They won't be explicitly stating anything about an artifact, because they're written by humans. But they talk about the legends and supposed artifacts. I'll do more research on the state... though why anyone would put an ancient artifact out in Illinois is beyond my understanding."
She sat back down as Theo walked off, only looking back up when he returned an hour later. "What did you find?"

Books. That was something he was familiar with these days. Heaven had endless amounts of information; though not the same as books were in human spaces, the browsing system was rather similar. Diana had pointed to a section of books and he had followed, his own intrigue found in the eyes browsing up and down, reading the titles. Local histories, native american legends, folklore and ghost stories, 1920s in Chicago...there seemed to be plenty of history books of all sorts and genres, despite being categorized in some way. He glanced at the paper Diana had given him, only to find that they were numbered.
Numbers...ah! There, numbers by a barcode. There was a system wasn't there...he looked at the numbers on the shelves as well. That was easy enough. It seemed humans had their own way of working things out quickly. At least they didn't have to read all of the books to find out what they were looking for.
Minutes later, he had grabbed the books. One about ley lines and ancient native trade routes, a book about lost treasures hidden by spaniards during the Age of Exploration, one on desolate places around the world, and one on forgotten cultures and a book called 'Chariot of the Gods.' Some strange theory people had about something, apparently.
"Here," he put the books on the table," haven't looked through them yet but there's promise...I think. They don't seem too difficult, we can each take one or two and look over it until the library closes," he offered, "personally I think the lost treasures and this–" he pointed at the last book, "looks closer to what we're looking for."
The last book hadn't been on the list but he had spotted it on a 'return' pile, with the words 'unsolved mysteries' on top and he had immediately taken it. It seemed like what they were looking for; after all, wasn't all of this just one big unsolved mystery?

"Sounds good," Diana said, turning to shut off the computer- she hadn't found anything useful, anyway. "Let's go sit in the comfy chairs." She led him to a remote corner of the building, settling herself in one of the plush reading chairs. "You take those and your new one. I'll handle these."
The rest of the day passed in relative quiet. Diana felt almost like her old self again, scouring books and taking notes in her little notebook. Her curls fell in pretty ringlets over her focused features as she worked, and she got up two times over the remainder of the day to grab them both food and sneak it back to their corner. She did take a 30 minute nap in the mid-afternoon, insisting that Theo not say anything about it.
When the library was a little less than twenty minutes from closing, she shut her book and set it aside. "I found a lot of interesting information about Chicago history and apparitions, but nothing that seems like it's our artifact. What about you?"

The books were intriguing to say the least, but frankly, Theo wasn't certain whether they were true or not. Some of it all sounded like the ramblings of a madman, while other parts had enough data and history to back it up. Humans were strange sometimes; he always assumed books in a place like this would have had some sort of...criteria, to be considered as non-fiction. Perhaps he was wrong.
The whole day had been spent to read through the books, and he almost didn't notice how quickly the day passed until Diana was at his table once again. He looked up, almost as if being pulled out of a daze, and he immediately looked back to his finished books pile.
"Right," he cleared his throat, "well...there wasn't a lot of information and to be honest, some of it seemed more like a story than truth...but I found some interesting story about an old effigy nearby, apparently it's some structure from an archeological dig right outside the city."
He slid the book towards her. "There's also some cliffs with apparently...old writings written on them. They might be a clue; we could always find some tourist center and ask about it. What did you find? Anything to do with supernatural energy in the area?"

Diana reached out, taking the book from him to scan what he had been talking about. "There was nothing except ghost stories in the older parts of town. Most of them sounded made up- there was one about a possessed toaster, but I hardly think that'll lead us in the right direction."
"This is the best lead we have," she said, tapping the book about the effigy and cliffs. "I say we follow this tomorrow. I can rent a car and we'll drive out to a tourist center." An announcement came over the speakers, warning of closing time.
Diana stood after writing down all the useful details he'd pointed out. "We can head back to the hotel."
The budget for the trip did not account for two separate rooms (SORRY FOR A TROPE LOL), so they were relegated to a single bedroom with two beds at their hotel. Diana was sprawled on her bed, playing solitaire on her phone, when she sat up suddenly. "Shit. It's not really January 3rd, right? There's no way it is."
When Theo confirmed the date, Diana looked like she might throw up. "I'm going to the bar," she said hoarsely, quickly grabbing her key and wallet. "I'll be back later." Without another word she fled the room, leaving a confused Theo behind.

(I love it HAHA)
He snorted, for the first time sounding rather amused. "Possessed toaster...I doubt that's what we're looking for." He sighed. It wasn't much of a lead, but hey, interesting ruins were better than nothing, right? He nodded. Whatever they were looking for, if there weren't any leads there, they could always check the museums too.
Closing the book, he followed Diana out.
The room they were staying in was...small, but he could manage. Two beds at least, so that wasn't awkward at all. He started to organize his own things, already putting water in the kettle for a cup of tea as he went through the details of the day in his own head.
He only looked up when she asked for the date. January third. They had left after the New Year crowds so yes, of course. However, he was surprised at the way she had immediately fled the room. Still sitting on the chair by the window, he blinked, wondering what all of that was about. Should he follow? Did she want to be alone?
Then again, he didn't exactly trust her to be on her own, and she better not get drunk off her ass and hungover for the next day; she was the one driving, after all. He could teleport, but she couldn't, and well, teleporting wasn't exactly pleasant for humans.
With a sigh, he grabbed the key card and left the room, following after the young woman.

Diana was not sure how she had managed to forget the date. She had been too absorbed in the mission, in her drinks, that she must have not registered the passing of the weeks. She booked it at top speed to the bar, an empty agony churning in her chest, and ordered six shots and a chaser. Entirely reckless of her, but she wanted to be as drunk as possible as quickly as she could.
By the time Theo found her, she was on her fifth shot, and even then she managed to down that one and the next one before he sat down across the table from her. She chugged her soda, staring down at the table. "I told you that you don't need to babysit me," she said quietly. "I was okay this morning, wasn't I? Can't I drink in peace?" Her voice was still hoarse, a hint of pain glaring through. She had already decided not to take another partner mission after this- it made her realize how heavily she drank.
The warmth was spreading through her chest, but the effects of the alcohol would take a few minutes yet. She wished it would hurry up, so she could order another round of shots. As it was, Diana was still regrettably sober, her curls falling around her brown cheeks as she watched the table instead of her partner.

While there was part of him that definitely disapproved of her antics, he wasn't a completely unempathetic creature. He had seen the way she reacted to the date. There must be something that was bothering her about this specific date and time. He sat across from her as she spoke. He knew she didn't need a babysitter, but it felt wrong to just let her be.
They were partners on this mission, and that meant he had to make sure she was okay. He grasped the menu as she spoke. "I don't drink much," he admitted, "but I guess you'd probably know a good drink for me to try."
She didn't seem like she wanted to talk about it just yet, and Theo was patient if anything. He had all of eternity, after all, to figure it all out. He looked over to Diana, looking just a tad sheepish.
"I'm not here to lecture you, but drinking alone can't be all that fun, right?" he murmured, "seems better to have company, even if I'm probably not the kind of company you seek."

Diana raised her eyes to his briefly, assessing the intent behind his words. Part of her was tempted to speak harshly, to push him away before he got too close to hurt her by leaving, like everyone else. But she couldn't. It felt too harsh. So she looked over the menu as well.
"Thank you," she said simply, before clearing her throat. "If you want something fruity, a Mai Tai or Malibu Bay Breeze would be good. There's also wine, which is richer, and beer, which tastes terrible in my opinion. A gin and tonic goes down easy."
After he had decided and ordered, she started up a stream of consciousness about what the plan was for tomorrow, chatting on until the six shots slammed into her with a sudden force about fifteen minutes later. She had taken them too quickly, but the effect was still the same. Her shoulders relaxed, the balm applied to her raw and aching throat, and she was tempted to order a few more for good measure. But it was better to wait a bit.
"Sorry for running out on you like that," she said, swishing her can of soda around before drinking. A hectic sparkle had come into her eyes, and her cheeks were growing pink as she spoke. "I didn't realize... I didn't know what day it was."

He had tried the wine earlier; it was pleasant, almost familiar, though Theo couldn't quite tell why that was. He wasn't sure about the other options she provided; they all sounded so complicated, and well, the only one he could really remember was the gin and tonic, and so that was what he ordered.
It was surprisingly not bad at all. A little fruity, a little like soda, and with a strange, herbal combination...he could get used to this, at least. He simply sipped at his drink from the little straw it had, listening to Diana speak intently, as she began to relax. Was this just her being less jumpy or the alcohol? He knew humans had reactions to it–apparently, they lose their inhibitions after drinking–but since he didn't feel any of that, he couldn't quite understand what drunkenness was.
"Oh, no worries," he spoke, dismissing her previous actions, "is there a reason why the date made you leave? I presumed you might have forgotten something, but is it important? I'm not quite sure about human holidays still...so I might've missed it."

Diana shouldn't be surprised that he asked- she was the one who brought it up. And she had known that this night would not be like the last, a drunken escapade involving making out with the first man who bought her drink. This night was not going to be a happy one, no matter how drunk she got.
"It's not a holiday," she said with a wry laugh, waving down the waiter for another shot and a margarita. "But yes, I did forget something. Today is the day my mom died, five years ago. And this is the first year I won't be able to visit her grave on the anniversary. So I plan to have a few more drinks, to forget that I've failed at the only thing I have left- being a good daughter to the only person who ever loved me."
Sarcasm was Diana's line of defense, and it came out sharply now. It was not directed at Theo, but rather at herself. Despite her self-deprecating laugh, her hands were shaking as she reached out to take the drinks from the waiter. "Angels don't feel things, right? That must be nice. There's a lot I'd give to be able to be numb for a while."

He frowned, for once, looking almost sympathetic. "I'm sorry about that," he replied, shifting his weight in the seat he was sitting in, "but I'm sure that's not true. I might not know your mother, but from what I've heard...well, most of those who pass through this life and to the other, many only wish the ones left behind are well. I'm sure she'd want you to..." Move on? Was that too blunt?
It was both a blessing and a curse to not have a single memory of his own life back when he was human; on one hand, he couldn't remember the tragedies of living, but...in a way, he couldn't quite empathize either. No one would trust the advice from someone who didn't feel the loss of death; he certainly wouldn't have.
He looked at his glass, already half empty. "To tell you the truth, most angels probably do feel things...the more you live among the people, the more you learn how they work, and some probably feel just as human as you do, but I suppose I'm not the same way. Some angels have memories of the lives they once led other than the deaths they faced...others...well, we don't exactly know who we were when we lived."

"My mom would not be proud of me," Diana whispered, almost to herself. "I wish you could've met me at my prime. I was everything a human should be- funny, ambitious, and optimistic. Isn't that what our species is noted for? Persistence? Nowadays all I am is weak and tempted to give up. That, and an alcoholic."
The hunter listened to the other part of his speech with curiosity, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Sounds like you need lessons, then." She threw back her shot before wiping her mouth with her sleeve. "I'm far from the best teacher- I'm barely human any more. But I'll cut you a deal. Clearly you disapprove of my drinking... if I promise to stop for the rest of our trip, I get to give you lessons on how to be a human being. I'm sure I remember enough from my prime to give you the full experience."

She didn't seem like the poster child of 'giving up' to him, at least not yet. She was still fighting for her dignity and for the good of everyone. Still, he listened to her words. In a way, it sounded like a good deal, one in which he had only things to gain. It was true, he wasn't fond of her little alcohol problem and she was right; he had plenty to learn about being human these days.
"That...sounds like a good deal," he nodded, before clinking his glass to hers, "I hope you're up for that job; I'm truly quite helpless when it comes to humans and their dealings...but if you wish, I can keep you accountable with your drinking." He gave her a sheepish smile.

"Excellent," Diana smiled, for a moment distracted from her pain. It was a real challenge again, one that awakened that old part of her that enjoyed planning and puzzling. How to teach an angel to be human? What were the essential human experiences?
At least she could enjoy one last night of drinking before the slight withdrawal kicked in over the next few days. "I'm sure I'll stumble around a bit in my teaching, but that's also part of being human- dealing with incompetence. Give me some time to brainstorm, and we'll start small. You'll do great."
From there, Diana relaxed a little, chatting more freely about previous missions and books she really enjoyed- insisting that reading was part of the human experience and he should pick up novels more often. After the alcohol began draining from her system, the inevitable drowsiness came over her. With a yawn, she stood a little unsteadily, stretching. "We should probably get to bed. Thanks for following me down here. It turned out better than I thought."
