A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

He nodded, his brown eyes staring intently at Diana as she spoke. He almost felt a twinge of sympathy for the girl; losing a parent must be hard. He didn't have to remember his own earthly experience to know that. Still, it was amusing to know what humans thought of heaven.
How surprised they'd be to know that things weren't exactly bright fields and flowery meadows. "I hope you have a long way to go before you see it," he replied earnestly, "it's...definitely not how humans imagine it, and...well, sometimes being an angel seems more exhausting than it is. Sometimes, you just wonder..."
Sometimes he wondered why he was even alive again. No, not alive, but certainly not dead. It was a dilemma he had pondered over for years; would he be more appreciative if he could remember? Or was it because he could not remember that he was still okay with this? Sometimes he wondered if it'd be easier if he'd just stay dead, unaware of the dangers and the sorrows of the world.
"Nevermind," he replied quickly, his eyes flickering to the passing fields and telephone lines outside the window.
"I assume...your mother's untimely death led you to become a hunter then?"

"Yes," Diana replied shortly, her gaze turning away and her fingers drumming on the table anxiously. She contemplated telling him everything- she didn't usually, but this was no ordinary human. It was unlikely he would care or even remember after returning to heaven. Maybe once she'd spoken to him more, had a few more drinks, she could open up to him. It would be almost like having a friend again, but with no long term requirements.
But how could she describe the way her life had crumbled around her? How she'd lost everything that defined her and wandered for a year between jobs and apartments, until she'd found the hunters? There were no words to describe the hollow fire that still burned in her chest to this day. She couldn't even journal about it, sticking to safer topics or short stories instead.
"I've been a hunter for a few years now," she said, switching back to a safe topic. "Mostly I go after vampires, for... obvious reasons, but I have experience with most of the supernatural. You're my first angel, though." That sounded bad, so she gave him a faint smile. "Not that I'm trying to kill you, of course."

He could see on her face that she wasn't exactly comfortable with answering his question, and he almost felt a little guilty for asking. They barely knew one another and she had every right to distrust him; he didn't quite trust humans either. He had heard stories, after all, that hunters weren't exactly all sunshines and rainbows. They had their own demons to kill, and they had their own agendas.
They weren't all that different from the angels he knew, and from himself, really. He didn't press any further.
He gave her a small smile at her statement. "Don't worry, I didn't think you were," he replied. He blinked, uncertain of how to continue the conversation. It was his fault really, for making it awkward by asking such a personal question. Still, he'd rather get to know the other woman rather than spend the rest of the journey in silence.
They were interrupted by the waitress, bringing them their food. He was almost grateful for the interruption; the food smelled great, and it looked pretty good too. It had been years since he had felt so...human. He could barely remember what it was like to be like this.
"So what's it like?" he asked, looking up, "being a hunter...or human in the city? I'm afraid I lack the experience."

Diana picked up her turkey club and took a bite, chewing it several times before she responded. Theo really knew how to ask the big questions, the ones that reminded her how different she was from who she used to be. It was an interesting dynamic, since nobody had taken the time to get to know her after she'd dropped out of college. Well, that might have been because she usually didn't let them.
"It's complicated," she said. "Being a hunter isn't- I'm given instructions on what I'm hunting and where, and I go. I kill whatever I'm sent to kill- I prefer guns, but they usually have altered bullets that can take down supernaturals. Being a human is more difficult- there's my job, taxes, rent, insurance, transport. And that's not even the emotional side of things, just the practical."
Diana wiped her mouth with the cloth napkin, pausing to take a breath. She downed the rest of her drink, letting the warmth spread through her throat, before she continued. "Emotionally, most people have a lot going on. Boyfriends, girlfriends, partners, friends, parents, siblings, goals, dreams, doubts, fears. It can all pile up pretty fast." She was hoping he wouldn't notice the shift in her verbiage- she had gone from talking about her experience practically to others emotionally. As of recently, she'd only had the last two items in her list, plus a nasty tangle of grief and hatred that many people didn't sit with.

He listened intently, nodding at her words as he began to eat the pasta he had ordered. It wasn't bad; the flavour was bright, not too bland and not too savoury either. He certainly could enjoy this kind of food, he thought, even if it felt rather unfamiliar. It was interesting at least; did all human food taste like this, or were there different varieties? He supposed he'd find out sooner or later.
From what she was saying, it certainly sounded complicated. There were so many details to their lives that angels just didn't have. They had aspects of their lives that he couldn't exactly relate to. Boyfriends? Girlfriends? He knew what it meant to have a partner; angels constantly had to trust one another to the fullest to truly work alongside others, but the humans just seemed to have so much emotion, so much going on, Theo himself felt almost overwhelmed with the details from hearing about it.
"That sounds like a lot," he commented with a frown, "how do you...deal with all of that? Seems like humans have so many things and just...do you really have time for all of that? To think about all of those things in a day?"

"I think most of us are notoriously bad at balancing it all. You get a new partner and your friends fall to the wayside. You forget to call your parents. We prioritize what impacts us most at that moment. So not every one of those things is something you think about each day- it's more like a constant rotation of things through your brain on a weekly basis."
Diana had already waved down the waiter for more wine, hoping Theo didn't know how much alcohol people normally consumed. When she went hunting she had to drink more, and it made her feel slightly addicted. "Try the wine with your pasta," she said with a faint smile, glad to see his interest in his food.
The lightness from her few drinks was making her a little less inhibited, and Theo wasn't really human, so she had a much easier time talking to him. "For me, I think it's a little less complicated," she continued, eating the last of her sandwich. "I don't have parents or siblings, or a partner. I have only a few friends, and one real goal in life. So fewer things take up more of my time." Not that they were pleasant things. "But I spend my free time reading and writing- it helps the distractions fall to the wayside."

He nodded slowly, as if taking it all in. Was his own life that messy when he was alive? He couldn't even remember it, so perhaps it was. Part of him didn't understand; what was the need for humans to have so much if they couldn't even balance it all? Wouldn't it be easier to simplify their lives, to only keep what was necessary?
Theo had always been the kind to keep his things in order, however few they were. It made more sense to compartmentalise; that was what angels did. They did one thing at a time without much thought for the rest.
As she gestured towards the dark liquid, he took the glass, swirling it once before taking a sniff and sipping on the wine. He almost coughed at the initial taste; what was this? It tasted sweet, sour, with a strange aftertaste. Wine...how strange. It wasn't bad, but he couldn't quite say it was good either.
She started speaking of her own experience, and now he was intrigued. She didn't seem to connect to others often. Reading and writing was something he could connect to; he had spent hours in libraries picking up on what he didn't understand.
"So you're not the type to keep many friends around," he mused without any tact, "would you consider yourself...satisfied without those said partners and relationships?"

Diana watched him sip the wine, and his reaction to it obviously amused her. For a brief moment there was a genuine smile on her lips- not one twisted by sarcasm or wryness, but a flash of happiness. It transformed her features, softened her face. Her full lips spread momentarily, her brown eyes glimmering in the evening light that streamed in through the window. He had no true experience with the things she knew so well, and it was a brief distraction.
Then the moment was gone, and her face was back to its regular expression- pretty, but stony. She didn't mind his forwardness as others might have- she didn't have the patience for playing by society's rules, and she often asked the same kind of direct, often tactless questions. It was only fair that he get a glimpse of her, too.
"I used to be the kind of person who had a lot of friends," Diana said with a shrug. "I've changed a lot in the last few years. I let those relationships fade away- they didn't give me the same kind of satisfaction they used to. I don't think I need them as much, anymore." That part was a half-truth, but it was what she told herself. Better to believe that than admit that she feared genuine connection, that she was scared to know and love anyone just to have them leave her again. "Do angels have... friends? Or partners?"

Hm, interesting. He didn't know what it was like in the human world, but to just abandon fellow friends and comrades like that because they didn't give any satisfaction seemed like a rather...heartless thing to do. Were humans all like this? So transient, so...easy to give up on anything? Was that just how it was, how things were supposed to be in their world?
They often said angels were heartless, for caring little for the individual well-being of humans but...they seemed to be doing a great job of that on their own. It was confusing and interesting all the same, how quickly the evening could change for them.
"Angels have a sort of system I guess," he spoke slowly, taking another bite of his pasta, "we have partners to balance out our own. We have our own specialty, and our partners compensate for what we don't have yet. We're not always together, but we rely on one another for support I suppose. I guess the most similar thing to the human world would be marriage, but it's not the same. I don't think we have the same concept of love as humans speak of, but it's...reliance. Survival, I suppose."
It was a hard concept to explain to one who didn't understand the wars they battled in, after all.

"Sounds more like a cop's partner than marriage. People who are married can't always rely on one another anyway." A faint scowl played on her lips, bitterly remembering her father before she continued. "But that makes sense. It's smart of you guys to support each other like that."
Diana drowned another glass of wine, good and thoroughly drunk now. She liked and disliked being drunk- her moods were more variable, her emotions more visible, but there was the pleasant energy in her chest that washed away a lot of her negativity. The odds were ten to one that she would find a random person to hook up with tonight- good thing they had separate bunks. She always craved affection more openly when she had been drinking.
"Do you have a partner?" She asked, tilting her head. "If so, where are they? What are they like?"

Theo didn't exactly know what a cop partner was but he filed that as 'information he'd find out about if he needed to know later' and shrugged it off. He couldn't remember much of his real life, but he knew that marriage had meant relying on one another back in the day. Life had been hard; that was the impression he had, and family always stuck together.
He shook his head. "I'm still quite new to the game," he admitted with a faint smile, "I think it took them a lot more time to...well, get me adjusted to this angel thing. This is technically one of my first missions." The others were simple run-of-the-mill things in the past. Simple smiting and destroying demons. Never working with other creatures other than their own.
Theo shrugged. "Matches made in heaven are a fickle thing; they have to match completely, I believe. They need to work as one, two extensions of one being in a way...getting that wrong only spells trouble for both angels. That's why it takes them a while to assign certain angels a partner, while other angels sort of get it right on the first try."

"I hope you find your partner one day- and I pity the angel boss that stuck you with me," Diana said with a laugh. Though some hunters were more abrasive than her, she wasn't exactly a kind, cooperative person. "I hate to sour your view of humanity." She waved down the waiter for the bill.
"I'll see you in the morning, then?" She stood, steadying herself on the table. "I'm going to go pay with our nice hunter company card, then I'm going to the bar car." Diana waved at him briefly before moving off to do exactly as she said. She tucked the card back in her bag in her sleeping compartment before making her way to the bar.
It didn't take too long for her to find someone- an older, rugged looking man who paid for her drinks and complimented her almost innocent good looks. She knew when she sobered up she would be disgusted with herself for giggling at his jokes and leaning into his hand when he touched her cheek. But for the moment, she soaked in the positive attention, her inhibitions washed away by the liquor.

He gave Diana a small smile. "You're...not too difficult to tolerate." Of course, his words probably sounded blunt but it was as good as one could really get from Theo, considering how utterly unused to human etiquette he was. He nodded, watching her leave the car, before turning to his own business again.
It was strange, how humans just had entire worlds to live in, at their own disposal. They had something he had never really known...freedom. In a way, maybe it could be nice, he thought. To make your own decisions, to live life however you wanted to...but he knew of its dangers. Knew how humans constantly messed up, again and again. At least his own existence wasn't complicated. He knew what needed to be done. He knew what he was and what mattered.
Did anything else matter? He didn't really notice Diana taking longer than usual; then again, what was usual? Time was a strange thing for Theo after all.

"That's the nicest thing you've said to me," Diana told him on her way out. She had said a brief goodnight, and didn't expect Theo to be looking for her at the moment. He was far from her thoughts at the moment, her attention wrapped up in her newfound friend.
He bought her another drink, and she sipped it as they chatted about inconsequential things. Whenever she met strangers that she hoped never to see again, she lied about everything, from her name to her career to her past. It was a fun game, creating an identity that didn't weigh on her as heavily as her real one.
Diana lost track of time quickly in the bar car, especially when the rugged man started kissing her. It had been a long time since she had been genuinely kissed- that is, by someone who knew the true her and accepted her entirely. Plenty of strange men had kissed the persona she crafted in her drunkest moments. It felt nice, to feel someone's hands on her, pulling her in, lavishing her in a momentary affection that made her heart soar. She always came crashing down in the morning, but on nights like this she could forget all her mistakes.

She really was taking her time. Theo frowned, pondering over all of the options, before standing up and heading out to where the bar should be. She said she'd be gone for a bit...but she didn't specify how long. It shouldn't take too long to pay, right? He didn't want to admit that there was a bit of concern he had for her.
Humans weren't exactly dangerous to his kind but hey, he had heard stories, read books about how they spent years and millennia hurting each other. He couldn't help but wonder if something was wrong. He'd just...take a quick look perhaps. If she couldn't be found, then that was that, but hey, he could at least try to locate her.
He slid the door closed and began to move through the train, 'excuse me's and 'sorry's leaving his mouth as he passed people all heading towards different sections of the train. Of course, he trusted Diana to know what she was doing and to defend herself, but still, one couldn't be too cautious, right?
Entering what seemed to be the bar area of the train, he glanced around, hoping to see the woman around.
