A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

If Diana had been sober, she might have appreciated Theo's caution for her well-being. Or she might have resented him for not trusting her to take care of herself. As it was, she was too drunk to care. She had gone a little too far with her drinking tonight, given that she was on a train with a bunch of strangers and an angel she had no choice but to trust for the time being. Her mind was awash with the giddy delirium that the extra shots had brought on, her thoughts far from missions or angels or responsibilities.
When Theo found her in the loud bar car, she was still seated beside the rugged older man, entangled in his drunken embrace, her head tilted back as he kissed a pathway down her neck. There was that strange look of bliss and exhilaration on her face, brought on by her heated encounter with a stranger, and her pretty almond eyes fluttered as he brushed her collarbones with his lips. The rest of the bar paid them no attention- apparently a couple in a dim corner was not a terribly uncommon sight.

Theo glanced around the bar. He had heard of these places, but rarely been on his own. He wasn't exactly familiar with how humans worked and operated, but everything felt...civil. There were patrons at the bar, groups of friends or strangers chatting around the tables. Perhaps he wouldn't think much of it–no, shouldn't think much of it at all, but his eyes brightened as he saw the familiar face for a moment...
Wait, why did he feel as if he had just interrupted something...intimate?
A frown appeared on his face. Should he leave her alone? Perhaps interfere? She didn't seem like she was in danger. Yet...a feeling of irritation seemed to begin crawling up Theo's spine. They were on a mission. This wasn't just some fun weekend away from home; there was work to be done, and he expected her to be awake and on time, bright and early the next morning as soon as the train stopped at the station. How the hell was he going to make sure of that when she was like a piece of prey in some old man's octopus clutches? Not to mention, he wasn't exactly the kind of man he could see her going for...and he was sure her eyes weren't as glazed over earlier...
Pursing his lips, he began to move towards her. Whether she liked it or not, he needed her to take this job seriously.
"Excuse me," he interrupted the two, raising a brow at Diana, "I believe my friend here is in no condition to consent to your advances."

The man pulled back, a scowl crossing his features as he looked up at Theo. He seemed to consider saying something in return, his hands still cupping the muscle-tempered curves of Diana's form, but another look between the two cured him of this desire.
"You didn't tell me you had a boyfriend," the man responded, his own alcohol intake preventing him from truly hearing Theo's words. Diana, who would usually be annoyed at the interference in her personal life, looked a little too pleased to see Theo, and it was clearly throwing the man off.
"Fine." He rolled his eyes, pushing away from Diana and standing, brushing himself off. "There's other women in this bar. It's a shame to lose such a pretty exotic one though. Makes sense that you two would be together." He gestured between the two of them as he uttered the not so subtly racist comment, moving off to the other end of the car.
Diana waved a hand in dismissal, disappointed she had lost an opportunity for fun but also turned off by the man's dehumanizing speech. After he was out of sight, she turned back to Theo, a beaming smile crossing her features. "Th-eo!" She said, a hiccup breaking the word in two. "I didn't think I'd see you until tomorrow morning." She stood unsteadily, bracing herself against the table. "Do you want a drink?"

Whatever the other man was trying to imply, it went right over Theo's head, as he dismissed the man with little but a wave of his own hand, ignoring him until he stood up out of the seat. Theo slid into the seat, glancing to Diana. While he could still feel the slight itch of irritation in him, his expression softened as he glanced to Diana. Even he could tell she wasn't in her right mind.
Then again, he didn't exactly know whether this was a common occurrence or not. He knew humans had their vices, but he'd certainly have his questions tomorrow.
"I don't think another drink will be productive for you," he frowned, "seems like you've had a little too much to drink already. Why don't we head back to the room and we can talk about this tomorrow? You should get some sleep."

Diana's full lips tilted downwards. "But I'm having a good time and I'm not ready to go to sleep," she said, crossing her arms. "Sit with me for just a few more minutes? You don't have to worry about me not being awake on time tomorrow. I've plenty of practice getting up after a night of drinking."
The hunter sank back into her chair, stretching her legs out in front of her and propping her chin on her hand. "Besides, we're going to be working together for the foreseeable future. Don't you think we should know more about each other? I'll start- I may look drunk, but I can handle my liquor pretty well, and I could still go toe to toe with a new vampire right now. What about you- how old are you, anyway? Have you ever gotten drunk before?"

He frowned. To be frank, he didn't know enough about this woman to know whether she was really okay, or simply saying it to get him off her case. Either way, he had been assigned this job, and part of it meant not letting this girl completely destroy herself before the mission even started. It wasn't exactly resentment per se, just a strange taste in his mouth, watching someone so alive trying to off themselves like that. It was reckless, it was stupid, and frankly,
His expression almost seemed cold, unflinching. "All you need to know is that I'm near a century older than you," he frowned, "and whether I've had a drink before doesn't exactly matter; I doubt I've ever gotten to your level in that regard."

Diana's good mood was dampered a little, by his seriousness and apparent disapproval. "No need to be so self-righteous, Theo. I know that's the angels' thing and all, but maybe a drink would loosen you up." She sighed, leaning her head back to stare up at the ceiling.
"My drinking isn't a problem if it doesn't interfere with my mission- and it won't. And no doubt I'll be embarrassed about this tomorrow, so no need to rub it in then." She knew she was reckless, and often stupid, but there was no need to explain herself to Theo. He could never understand why she drank so heavily. She raised her arm, looking at her watch.
"Eleven pm is a little early for me to go to bed, but I doubt I'll have much more fun with you around," she said, in drunken frankness. She stood and stretched, steadying herself on the tabletop again. "Be a gentleman and walk me back to my room, at least?"

He frowned, glancing at her as if trying to figure her out. What was with her and drinking? He assumed it was a certain vice of hers, and he had heard that humans sometimes had trouble reconciling with their real selves and that drinks could give them the little push of courage they needed but...if she was an alcoholic, it would certainly jeopardize the mission. After all, alcoholics never really knew how far was too far.
"You make sure of that first," he sighed, "the mission comes before everything I'm afraid, and I won't hesitate to force you to go cold turkey if there's even a single sign that this might ruin any opportunity to succeed. Keep that in mind? I don't want to hurt you but it's...for your own good."
He sighed; she probably saw this as him being a self-righteous asshole, but he was here for the job more than anything. Regardless, he held his hand out. "Shall we?" he hummed, "did you need...water or anything? We can get it before you get to your room."

"Sure, a little water would be nice." Now that the euphoria of drinking had faded, she did seem remarkably closer to sober, apart from the slight unsteadiness to her posture. Often she overhyped herself, and when someone killed her buzz she mellowed out quickly.
She took his hand and moved forward towards the bar, faintly resentful of his inquisitive gaze. Diana didn't really want to be figured out. She wanted... well, she didn't know what she wanted either. But being left to her self-destruction in peace was easier than this. His judgment reminded her of how far she had fallen, of how much potential she'd had once. Now what was she? A good hunter, but a promiscuous drunk who too often sat on the edge of rooftops, contemplating what it would be like to fall.
After they had gotten her water, she started back for her sleeping car, walking in silence beside Theo in the dimly lit train car halls. As they stopped outside her car, she spoke again. "I respect that you put the mission before everything," she said slowly. "I do the same. Trust me. There's nothing I want more than to wipe out the evils that hurt people." Memories of her mother flashed through her mind, followed by ones of her blood-drained body, and she winced faintly. "Well- I'll see you in the morning, then?"

He nodded, unaware of the dilemma she was having. He moved decisively towards the bar, ordering the water for her, only turning to her to pass the glass along. His expression seemed to soften momentarily, looking at her face as if trying to figure out why she had such a sullen expression on her face, but the moment quickly disappeared. Right. It was probably none of his business anyway.
Rolling his shoulder slightly in the discomfort that this situation now brought, he steeled himself before putting an arm around her as if to guide the young woman towards their car once again. The silence was...well, not exactly stifling but it certainly felt uncomfortable.
When she spoke again, he turned to her with a raised brow. Whatever her words truly meant, he couldn't quite get the subtle nuance of it all, but he could tell it meant something to her. He responded with a nod.
"Good night," he responded, shifting his weight from one foot to the other, watching her disappear into her room before letting out a sigh. Working with humans was something that just felt out of his depth. It certainly was a new territory for him.

Diana knew he didn't mean anything by the arm he used to guide her towards her room, but she still found herself leaning into it, and missing the simple warmth and comfort it provided when he removed it. She closed the door behind her, latching it tightly, before moving to her bed.
Absently, she fished out her phone, setting her alarm for the morning and rubbing her forehead. She laid back after she had set it down, staring up at the ceiling through the tears that welled in her eyes. It had been a long time since Diana had been touched in a non-sexual manner, and she had forgotten how desperate she was for it.
It meant nothing, she reminded herself, letting the hot tears fall down the sides of her cheeks, streaking past her ears and down onto her pillow. But for a moment, she had felt like a child again, when her father would reappear for a week and take her to the zoo or the park before disappearing, or when her mother would comfort her after a particularly bad fight with her friends. It had been years since she'd felt that kind of touch, and in her intoxicated state it brought back a flood of bittersweet memories, reminding her how lonely her life truly was.
Diana rolled onto her side, closing her eyes and letting the last of the tears fall silently onto her pillowcase as she drifted off.
---
In the morning Diana was ashamed of herself- for being caught by Theo, for crying herself to sleep over a platonic touch from a non-human being. She popped a few tylenol into her mouth from her disorganized bag and downed some water to fight off the coming headache.
When she met Theo she was dressed in fresh clothes, seemingly alert and ready to work. She had pulled her curls into a loose bun and greeted the angel cordially, with no mention of the night before. After they stepped off the train in Chicago, she turned to him. "So, we're hunting down evidence here? I'm not quite sure where to start. My missions are usually 'kill this vampire', so I haven't done a lot of research on artifacts."

(oh shit I thought I replied RIPPPPP how did I miss this)
Humans were so strange. Theo sighed, still staring at the closed door as Diana disappeared behind it, and after a few moments, his posture slumped back down to a more comfortable one. It was difficult to keep up an impression that he knew exactly what to do when all he had learned about humans were simply from books. From readings and observations and old classic novels he had found in his years after death. Mentally, he knew what it was like, to lose someone to the bottle, like they did in the stories.
Physically, watching a woman he barely know get drunk without a reason almost irritated him, in the sense that he couldn't even tell what her problem was, or why she'd do this to herself. Perhaps the years in the heavens made him a prude, but then again, perhaps having died and being without the same freedoms humans had made him all the more aware how lucky they had it.
An angel didn't need much sleep; he spent the night watching the world through a window, steeped in his own thoughts. Sunrises were still beautiful, he had to admit.
The next morning was as if nothing had happened.
"Morning," he replied briskly as he slung his bag across his shoulder and stepped off the train. "There's a Jesuit museum somewhere, might have a clue to what the artifact might be," he replied, looking over to her, "I guess I haven't explained what the artefact is right?"

(no worries love hehe)
"Not exactly. I'm assuming it's not like half a hunting spear from prehistoric times, like human artifacts?" Diana enjoyed the cold, brisk air that brushed over her cheeks, bringing blood and alertness to her features. She rolled her shoulders back, ready to get to work.
She glanced over at Theo, wondering how much last night had changed his opinion of her. "I can help with whatever you need. I'm decently smart, and a pretty good fighter. You can take the lead, since you know more." She wasn't quite the academic she'd been at her Ivy League college several years before, but she knew her way around a database and a library.

He almost smiled at that. "Nope, it's an amulet of some sort, if I can remember it correctly," he frowned, "if anything, demons are always a little bit...flashy. Amulets, jewelry, that sort of thing...a cursed object can eventually possess someone, or worse."
The man glanced at Diana. "Have you ever been in this city?" he asked. They had a starting point, a few pointers of information, but nothing more. "I can give you what I know, but I'm not so familiar with the human world as you are, I'm afraid."
He frowned, thinking of what he had been told. "If anything, I believe the amulet originates from a legend about there being places on earth, where the dimensions of hell and earth are thinner. It allows demons to...well, harness a certain power, or cross over, theoretically."
The man turned to Diana. "I suppose you wouldn't know of a place where we may investigate existing history and artifacts around here, no?"
