A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

for other shifters, at the Van Cortlandt Park!
There were weeks when he felt like he was drowning under ten-feet tall waves, and the past week was one of them. His new assistant had accidentally double-booked him twice, and both times, the patients were insistent on seeing him despite the extra wait, which meant that he had to deal with grumpy patients and double overtime shifts. Twice. Sitting in that office for extra hours made him itch for the excitement of being outdoors. He often had his wolf under control, but the exhaustion of the past week made the creature growl in frustration.
He was almost grateful for the pup scouts this weekend. There weren't many of them at this time of the year–many of them had summer camps and other things to attend to–but it'd be nice to leave the city for some fresh air. The park was a beautiful place, even more beautiful when he could scent the other wolves that lived in the vicinity. It was like being back in his hometown again, except a little different. It was a feeling of home.
He arrived a few hours early too. Today was his day off, which meant he was going to enjoy it. Already holding some takeout in a bag, he meandered through the forest, looking for a nice bench or somewhere he could have his lunch and just relax for a bit, before getting in the headspace to handle some rowdy kids again.

[attr="class","rngwlvs"] [attr="class","urthesun4"] [attr="class","rngwlvsinfo"] [attr="class","chrnamebig"]DECLAN VLKODLAK [attr="class","magtype"]WEREWOLF SHIFTER Life as a shifter isn't much different from that of a human, though the tendency to shed your skin and assume the form of a massive black wolf might set you apart from your peers. Declan was born to two lycanthrope parents in Pennsylvania and grew up in the pack there, as much as member of the pack as of his own family. He came into his own around 15, managing his first shift with relative ease thanks to the support and leadership of his Alpha at the time. However, as he grew older it became apparent he would be a strong wolf in his own right, and this caused some nerves amidst the pack. Because of this, his parents decided to move up to New York rather than try to weather the power struggles that would happen if they stayed. Never one of social climbing, they decided their son's safety was more important than power in the pack. For a while, Declan lived unaffiliated, though the loneliness grew on his quickly. Having been raised in the pack, the constant presence of other wolves was a balm he didn't know he needed, so despite his parent's pleading, he recently joined the pack. It hadn't been long enough for his strength to become apparent, and he makes a point to keep his head down and mouth shut most of the time. Still, he's an easy-going, playful guy who, despite his somewhat intimidating appearance is a jokester that doesn't take much seriously and enjoys just chilling around town. Still, as part of the pack he is required to go on patrols and ensure the peace is kept between the myriad denizens of the city. When this is the case, he takes his job seriously and protects his pack. He hasn't met his mate yet, and at the ripe old age of 31 he fears he never will. He contents himself by saying he'll be happy living with the pack the rest of his life, but both his human and his wolf side cry out for that perfect other person made for him. For this reason, he loiters at bars and clubs often, indulging his partying side and looking for his mate in the same move. Though this desire for love causes some teasing among the other guys in the pack, he shrugs it off, not letting it bother him. He has little time for the macho bullshit the other wolves in his pack carry on with, instead happy to do whatever makes him happy with little concern for appearances. He still visits his parents often and works as a volunteer firefighter. In his spare time he volunteers at the Big Brother nonprofit to help kids feeling lost find meaning in their lives. Declan is a large guy, one of the types that constantly gets jokingly asked if he ate his Wheaties that morning. He stands at 6'3" and weighs about 220lbs. His hair is dark and worn scruffy, and though he shaves often he seems to constantly sport a few days of growth on his cheeks and chin. In contrast to the easy-going appearance of his human side, Declan's wolf is a massive, black beast that stands almost shoulder height with a normal human. [break]
Declan finally had some time off - 36 hours off, in fact - and was determined to spend them at the park. After the last week, he could use the time off. He'd had to watch as a house burnt from the inside out, gutting itself and leaving little more than a charred husk in its wake. Luckily, he and his team had been able to get there in time to get the family and their pets out safe and alive, but there was little they could do for the house except keep the blaze from spreading. There was something about the look of total despair on their faces that ate at Declan's heart, and it took some time away from the asphalt forest for him to regain his bearings. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and readjusted the safety goggles over his eyes, revving the engine on the chainsaw once before taking on some more of the slender saplings trying to crowd out a juvenile pine. While his job was to preserve and protect the forest as a park ranger, part of that job was ensuring the park stay safe for their visitors by keeping dangerous trees and branches trimmed. Seeing movement out of the corner of his eye, Declan turned off the chainsaw and sat it down, using the handkerchief in his back pocket to mop at the sweat. Summer in NYC wasn't all roses and rainbows - it was still hot as shit. "Hey!" he called, raising his gloved hand into the air to wave down the approaching shape. He couldn't quite make out who it was, but on the off chance it was a mundane visitor he needed to reroute them around his work area. Despite only having moved here a year or two ago, Eli knew the park like the back of his hand. Not only did the pup scouts consistently meet here, but it was also just...calming. There was something about being in the park that reminded him of home. It was different–the park was still too well-groomed to be compared to the hills and skies and ridges of Alaska, but knowing the other shifters were often here made things feel safer. It was his community, his home, even if they weren't as open about it as they were up north.
It was strange though; despite knowing the pack and being part of it, he didn't know too many shifters in it. Everything in New York felt secretive; it didn't have the same family feel that it did up north. Still, as he approached the forest, he realized a man was waving at him from the cover of the young trees.
The pines were growing well. Perhaps too well? He assumed the park ranger was just telling him that they were doing construction in the area, before realizing...wait, he recognized that face. Not super well–he had never really talked to the other man–but he knew him. What was his name again? Daniel? David? Declan–yeah, Declan, right? He wasn't sure; should he risk it and maybe get the other guy's name wrong?
"Hey!" he greeted with a smile, still holding onto his sandwich, "I think we met before, right? I'm Eli, I don't think we ever actually talked but I remember your face."

Declan sat down the chainsaw and pulled off his gloves, stuffing them in his back pocket and giving the other guy a grin. "Hey Eli, nice to see ya," he said, brushing the woodchips off of his shirt and trying to clean up a bit. The smell of gasoline and freshly-cut wood clung to him even amidst the clean scent of pine, and though it was strong it wasn't necessarily off-putting.
"Yeah, I think we met in the clubhouse once or twice," he agreed, then noticed Eli's sandwich. "You trying to find a place for lunch? Mind if I join ya? I've been going since morning and I could definitely go for some food." He motioned towards the four-wheeler his lunch sat on. "There's that little picnic area just up ahead if you wanna eat there."
His optimistic attitude made it hard for him to consider that someone might say no, so he went ahead and loaded his equipment onto the four-wheeler and pulled out the insulated lunch bag from the small storage area on the back of the vehicle. He looked around, and once satisfied that they were alone, tilted his head to the side. "You're a wolf shifter, right? I know we met at a pack event, but I can't recall what you are."

He had been hoping the other man would mention his own name, but it seemed he was out of luck. Well, would it really be that bad if he forgot the other man's name? He seemed friendly enough. Eli simply gave him his usual crooked grin at that, before glancing to the pines he was cutting. The other man seemed to know what he was doing, Eli would give him that. It had been a while since he had done anything remotely outdoorsy...other than the pup scouts of course.
"Seems like a lot of work," he mused, glancing at the job the other man was doing, before chuckling, "if I knew you were around I'd have gotten you another sandwich or something." He didn't mind at all; any company was good company these days. He had only been in the big city for a year, but even now, he found it lonely sometimes. There just weren't enough opportunities to get to know others, especially with how busy his job could be.
"Yeah I'm a wolf," he chuckled, "and you? To be honest this city's so big I always forget how much territory the pack needs to cover." He gestured towards a nearby bench, "you're Declan right? Wolf as well or are you special?"

Lycari
After Emeline had told him about the lovely nature preserve where she'd heard wolves howling, Lycari decided to check it out. He had nothing to lose and so much to gain if he could talk to other shifters about the possibility of others like him being in the area.
The shifter had opted to take a bus to the nearest stop and then hoof it, or rather, trot it from there. He didn't know how to drive and he really hated the subway, so he sat at a window seat watching the scenery pass by and trying to keep the hope in his heart from overtaking his common sense.
He planned out what he was going to do. As soon as he was in the forest, he would shift into his wolf. Then he would scent out the others and show himself to them briefly. He would wait in the forest to see if they would come to him and then he could discern what kind of individuals they were. Either they would be curious and seek to talk, or they would be aggressive and he'd need to fight his way free. He would learn something in any case.
It seemed like no time at all before the bus drew up to a stop and its doors folded open. Lycari thanked the driver and stepped down. As the bus pulled away, the shifter waited and then drew in a big breath of fresher air. Balsam, pine, oak and maple came to him, overlaid by a wolfie scent that he was here to follow. He strode off the pavement and headed for a nicely wooded area. Once there, he shifted into his wolf and trotted deeper into the forest.
In time he came to a break in the trees. There he spotted two men talking like they knew each other. They were also wolves. Lycari debated whether or not to appear while he was outnumbered so, but he was a very large, strong wolf, well versed in fighting other predators and prey and he could also run like hell, so he decided to chance it.
Carefully he crept out of his cover and stood framed with the green of the forest behind him. His wolfen form was beautiful, with a thick white coat and proud stance. His nostrils twitched at all of the smells coming his way and he pricked his ears to listen.

"My mother did always like to tell me I'm special but...no," laughed the man, shaking his head. He motioned towards a tree he'd cut down earlier, laying on its side and making itself available as a perfect place to sit and eat. "Just a plain 'ol wolf. Can't say I would wanna be anything different, though." He pulled out a tortilla wrap and took a large bite, not seeming to notice the mustard on his chin as he chewed thoughtfully.
"It's not that much work," he said after swallowing, referring back to Eli's original comment. "Looks worse than it is. I'm just getting this area cleaned up before the kids show up. I just got moved over from full-time maintenance to part-time so I can also help out with the cub scouts." He took another bite. "I dunno the guy I'll be working with, though I'm pretty sure he's a shifter too. Hope he's not too uptight."
Before he could ask Eli what he did for a living, he looked up and saw a white wolf approaching. His stance was cautious, and Declan mirrored it. "Eli," he said softly, maintaining eye contact with the white wolf. "There's another wolf here. Can't tell if he's a shifter or not. You know him?"

Eli laughed at that. "God ain't that the truth," he grinned, glad the other wolf had a similar sense of humor, "honestly, we didn't even get to choose our 'if you can be one animal which would you be' properly."
He was always a bit awkward around people who took themselves too seriously–something probably to do with his own issues with authority back when he was younger–but it seemed like Declan wasn't the kind he'd find antagonistic at all. He had a feeling he'd get along with Declan well enough; it was something to do with the pack too. Naturally, shifters of a kind just bonded better, or at least, in his own experience.
"Oh, so you're the newcomer who I'm supposed to meet up with too?" he grinned, "what a coincidence then. Those kids can be a handful sometimes, so I'm glad you're around; I can always use a bit of help with the wrangling."
He didn't even notice the other shifter approaching, not until Declan's expression dropped slightly. He was suddenly more alert than he was before, glancing behind him to see a white wolf in the distance. Wolf? He didn't recognize this one; then again, he was still new to the pack. Still, if the other wolf was part of the pack, he'd have scented it...no?
"No idea," he murmured quietly, "don't think I recognize his wolf or his smell. Weird." He turned back to Declan. "Do you usually get new wolves around here? I know Maddox stays down in Manhattan more than at the park." He was skeptical, wary now. "Should we...?"

Lycari
The white wolf dropped his head and slightly wagged his plumy tail low at his hocks. He had to get these guys to recognize another wolf. As a shifter and not a were, Lycari could be many animals, but the wolf was his true alter ego. The two men sitting on the log were now looking his way.
Lycari cast about quickly looking for some sort of toy -- anything, a stick would do. There just to his right behind a bush was a small piece of branch about twelve inches long and nearly an inch thick in places. He picked this up and swung back to regard the two men again.
With his tail a-wag, Lycari tossed the stick into the air and then jumped for it. When he missed catching it, he pounced on it when it hit the ground, his jaws slightly open in a canine smile. He went into a play position and grabbed at the stick, pulling it towards himself with his front paws. Again, he tossed it and this time he caught it. He pranced around holding the stick like it was the best thing in the entire world. Suddenly he stopped and turned to watch the men again, tail slightly waving at his hocks again.
There wasn't a wolf alive who wouldn't understand this invitation to play.

Declan watched the wolf's actions with an increasingly curious expression, but realization filled his gaze when the wolf's deliberate actions spoke of greater intelligence than a normal animal. "I don't know him from the Pack, but I'm also not the best with my memory sometimes," he said to Eli, raising his hand in greeting to the other shifter.
"Hey!" he called, wiping the back of his arm over his face and finally getting that bit of mustard on his chin. "You outta shift back and have lunch with us. You're pack, right? Though I guess it doesn't matter too much." If the other wolf wasn't pack, he'd have to check in with Maddox or Lorcan, but he could have lunch with them before that. He didn't know the pack to be too strict when it came to visitors, but he'd rather be safe than sorry.
His wolf perked up slightly at the sight of another, but he resisted the urge to shed his human skin at the moment. Though hunting as a wolf was always exhilarating, he was actually looking forward to his lunch today and the thought of picking rabbit out of his teeth again didn't exactly tempt him.

Lycari
The white wolf let the stick fall from his mouth. In seconds a tall, pale, man with long white hair stood in its place. He was dressed in jeans and a t-shirt and wore sandals that matched for a change. He was athletically fit looking and moved with an easy grace.
Lycari walked towards the two men with a grin on his face.
"I guess the stick worked?" He ventured when he got closer. "Thought it would. Not a single one of us can pass up a good stick."
He stuck out his hand for a handshake.
"Name's Lycari and I'm new in town."

Okay, he hadn't expected that to work. He had been amused to see Declan try and convince the shifter to change back and have lunch. Wouldn't it have been funny if it was just a large dog? He was pleasantly surprised to know that they weren't wrong, and that huh, it was a wolf. Interesting.
He had certainly never seen a man like him. White hair and pale skin...he almost seemed like a ghost. It wasn't unusual to see a person match the colors of their wolf, but this was certainly something new. A snort left his mouth as the other shifter spoke. Perhaps his words held a truth; his wolf could never pass an opportunity to roughhouse with the others of his pack, but well, this wolf wasn't exactly part of the pack yet.
As much as he was friendly, Eli was also wary. "So you're new in town," he mused, "and you're here to...find the pack I suppose? Did you scent the territory markers?" Other packs had other formalities, but he was only really used to the ones from his hometown; they always announced the purpose of their visit before making any advances, especially as strangers.
He didn't take the hand, still uncertain of the other shifter's agenda. "I'm Eli, nice to meet you."

Declan, however, didn't hesitate at all and shook the other shfiter's hand with gusto. His grip was firm and...testing? "Declan, of the Van Cortlandt Pack, along with Eli there. We were just about to have lunch. I don't have anything to share, but care to sit and join us? It's not often a loner wanders into Pack territory, after all."
Though he was as friendly as anyone - far friendlier than most New Yorkers - it was a bit of a facade. He shared Eli's suspicions, able to sense the other wolf's hesitance and agreeing with it. There was no way Lycari didn't smell the scent borders, but maybe he was from an area that didn't have packs and didn't know how to go about it?
"I'm not from around here either," he offered, a verbal truce for the moment. "At least, not entirely. I grew up in Pennsylvania, and moved here as a teen. Found the pack and...the rest is history as they say. Where are you from? Did you leave your pack?"

Lycari
The scent coming off the two men was one of suspicion, but that was to be expected.
"Yep," Lycari replied, "A friend told me that there was probably a pack in this area, so I set out to find you."
He gave them a bright grin.
"And here you are.
"I'm from way up north, in the arctic you could say," he explained, "I don't exactly have a pack, I have a family."
He wasn't sure how much information to give the pair of men. Perhaps a little would go a long way and the rest could come later. That he wasn't limited to being just a wolf wasn't necessary right now.
"I'm here to find more of my kind, if I can."
Lycari dropped into a comfortable crouch with his hands hanging off his knees. While this looked awkward to others, it was a common way to rest for his tribe. Not only did it keep one's bottom from the cold ground, it enabled one to rise quickly and easily, something that was often necessary where he came from.
"So what's a wolf to do for fun around here?" He asked with his head cocked and his eyebrows raised.

The north? That piqued Eli's interest, at least. His grandfather's pack was from Alaska, though he and his family had lived most of their lives in Cali instead. Still, he had called his grandfather's pack home once, and it was nearly more a home than his real one. Wolves tended to stick together, after all, and he felt the same sentiment that way. A lone wolf was a dead wolf, his grandfather once said. It was what led him to join here so quickly.
"More of your kind? As in other shifters or those from up north?" Eli's posture was more relaxed than before; it was customary, of course, to be wary until one knew of the other's motives. Wolves survived that long for that same reason. Lycari didn't seem too much a threat; a wolf on its own should be no match for the rest of the pack. "–and where up north are you from?" Eli was curious, after all.
"To be honest, wolves don't exactly stay as wolves around here," he glanced towards Declan, as if checking to make sure he was saying the right thing, "New York City isn't exactly friendly to our kind...at least not in broad daylight. It's easier to shift at night or in some of the more forested areas...which is why we're here I suppose." Van Cortlandt park was big enough to hide the rest of their kind, after all.
