A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

Holding a smoothie in one hand, the curly-haired boy stood, chewing on the straw as he waited outside the shop. There were plenty of kids that played around this area, loitering around this spot. He didn't seem out of place, in his plain hoodie and jeans, slurping the drink loudly before tossing it into the trash, a grin on his face when it landed right inside. His grin didn't fade when the couple of fancy ladies scowled at him, whispering amongst themselves, something about rebel teens and how parents didn't parent enough these days.
The boy was carefree, without a single worry in the world. Frankly, he didn't give a single shit about what people thought, as he pulled out the packet of cigarettes he had stolen from Emeline, lighting one up as he leaned on the glass of the shop.
"Oi," a voice came from the door, and he turned to the voice. There stood a man giving him a pointed look. "You know, you can't just loiter around here waiting for Em; her appointment's going to be at least an hour, and she has other things to do after. She told me to tell you to go home first."
"What?" Ash whined, "but she told me she was going to get me pizza. It's buy one get one free today."
Jack rolled his eyes. "Yeah, but she has a job. Come on kid, just go home–" the older man scowled as he watched Ash take a puff from the cigarette, "–and where the hell did you get that? Are those mine?"
Ash shrugged, glancing at the pack. "Lucky Strikes?"
Jack rolled his eyes, yanking the pack from the boy. "Dude, stop stealing my shit. Your phone's charged, so when you're done with that, you can take it." The older man lit his own cigarette, closing the door and leaning on the glass next to the kid.
"Why can't I just stay? I'll just chill on your couch as usual." Frankly, Ash didn't want to go home. He was bored. Not to mention there was just nothing else to do; his friends were all busy with other things, most of them heading home for the long weekend.
"You were distracting her," Jack shrugged, "not to mention your whining grates my ears. Pretty sure the client didn't want to hear you say 'are you done yet' another five hundred times, kid, and I know you can't behave when you're impatient so just go home." Ash rolled his eyes, ashing the cigarette and tossing it to the floor.
"Whatever, you'll miss me," he replied smugly, as Jack let out a cackle and a sarcastic 'sure hope not,' opening the door for the kid to grab his backpack and his phone from the table. Grumbling a 'goodbye traitor' to his flatmate, he started off on the street. Guess he'd have to find someone else to get Pizza Monday with tonight.

Despite being raised in the city, Sello still felt like a fish out of water. He kept his head low as he practically sprinted down the sidewalk, hoping his curls hid his face as much as possible. Especially when he passed a couple of fancy women, making him subconsciously look down at his own plain shirt and jeans. He had his earbuds in, so he couldn't even hear them eavesdropping, but he could take a guess. He sped up his walking, a finger anxiously curling around one of the headphone straps.
The passing groups of people made him even more embarrassed since he was wandering alone. Really, neither of his sisters wanted to come with him on the errands? And their parents weren't home to force them to go together, but someone had to do it. Ugh, why did he always lose rock paper scissors? Maybe he should try his hand at luck charms, but knowing his luck, well, he should probably stay away for his own sake.
Nevertheless, after a couple of hours, he finally had everything. Or hopefully. He adjusted the straps of his backpack over his shoulders, feeling the objects against his back. Bundles of wild garlic, a new reed for Naleli's clarinet, and a couple of Lettie's books. He still shook his head at the thought of leaving his apartment—what was online shopping for if they weren't going to use it? And there were online books now a days, whatever.
"Herb shop, music shop, library..." he listed aloud. While one hand still twiddled with his headphone cord, the other was counting and uncounting down fingers. Was he missing anything? He paused and looked up to see if anything would jog his mind. Oh, a tattoo shop. He peered through the glass and glanced around for any cool art. No no no, he was getting distracted. He quickly shook his head and looked back at his fingers, still wondering if he needed to go somewhere else before he scrambled back home.

The bell chimed as he left the shop, slinging the loose pair of earphones around his neck as he hoisted the backpack into a more comfortable position. Well that was a mood killer; he just wanted some pizza. Now his evening was ruined, and he couldn't help but pout dramatically about not getting what he wanted. He had planned all of this! He knew exactly which seat he wanted to sit in, he knew exactly what slice he was going to get, plus the extra lime slushie that they sold for a dollar was his absolute favorite, and they could've gone home and stopped by that nice new bakery that sold absolutely magnificent merengue tarts. It would've made a fantastic breakfast too.
Ash groaned, looking up to see the other boy peering into the shop. Huh, an interested customer? Well, Jack couldn't say he was a good-for-nothing loudmouth if he helped their business, right? Not to mention, being able to lord that over his head about how he was great at advertising their business would be fun, and hey, any opportunity to help his flatmate, right?
"You should totally get a tattoo from there," Ash called out with a grin as the boy began to leave, "seriously, they have some of the coolest tattoo artists. I would know, like, they do really cool stuff."
He already began to jog up to the other boy. He seemed nice, probably one of the guys from around the neighborhood. The other kids either thought he was crazy for literally approaching anyone without a second thought or some goofball loner without friends. Which wasn't exactly true but apparently all of his friends had 'date nights' on Friday or whatever.

Sello was going to continue on his way when a noise surprised him, jerking his hand holding his headphone cord and popping one earbuds out. The voice was still sounding out, so it definitely wasn’t from his music. He glanced around a little before his eyes landed on a boy back by the tattoo shop. Huh, did he miss him? He was certainly smiling his way, and Sello quickly twisted his head to look over his shoulder but no one else was close enough. He turned back around and gulped. Get a tattoo?
”Huh? Me?” He said. He blinked a couple times before freezing as the other kid began running towards him.
He’s coming this way, oh no, not me, no, why! Ahh! He thought. The one day he was alone...no, he couldn’t end like this. Okay well the boy looked to be around his age, but he still wasn’t the best at social interaction.
”Oh no, I’m not—well, I dunno what to get, if, I did, anyway. And I’m not, uh, old...enough,” he said, especially mumbling the last part. Well he was old enough with parental permission, but there was no way they were going to let him do that. But, geez, imagine coming home with a tattoo because a random guy told him to get one. What a story that would be.

If the boy wanted Ash to leave him alone, he certainly didn't receive the cues for it. Despite the apprehensive look on Sello's face, Ash acted as if nothing was wrong and that he wasn't bothering anyone. The other kid looked his age, at least.
"Oh, you're too young?" he raised a brow at the other boy, looking at him in a skeptical manner, "I mean you look like my age. I'm eighteen but I guess you're not eighteen then? I mean you can get a tattoo in a year or two. Are you sixteen? Seventeen? You're still in high school, right? Maybe we went to rival schools or something." The boy was chattering away oblivious to the absolute speed of his conversation. Then again, any conversation with the hyperactive kid always turned out like this; he talked faster than most of his friends could catch up sometimes, and everyone constantly had to tell him to slow down or to justshut up.
He laughed, already walking alongside the other kid as if they were friends. "You don't need to get a tattoo, they sell really cool shirts with nice prints on them too, you know? You look like someone who'd like art. What's your name by the way?" Ash had aleady held his hand out, "I'm Ash, nice to meet ya. I'm totally not a stalker or anything, just...trying to help my flatmate get more customers. She's a really good tattoo artist."

Sello fiddled with his earbud, trying not to squirm as the other boy stared at him, and his head was starting to spin as he listened to him. It also made him queasy that he continued walking with him since he really couldn’t shake him off now. Eighteen was still pretty young for a serial killer. Or he could be lying to gain his trust? Ugh, maybe if he left the library faster he wouldn’t have been in this situation…
He blinked out of his thoughts as he glanced at the hand being held out towards him. Ack, he really couldn’t ignore him then, could he? The one thing to beat out his fear of social interaction was social expectation. He hoped his hand wasn’t too sweaty since he couldn’t really wipe his hand dry.
His name was Ash though, huh? The word “stalker” made Sello hesitate another second before he relaxed enough to get enough courage to take his hand in a light grasp.
"I do, like art, I guess,” he said. He paused, wracking his brain to remember all the questions thrown at him. “Um, hi, I'm Sello. I'm six—er, seventeen. Uh, I go to Kennedy, high school.

The other kid's handshake was light, and all he could think about was how his dad would tell him, that if he ever went to an interview, he had to make sure his grip was tight, not tight enough to hurt but enough to show confidence. Hm, was that his dad's thing or was that a real expectation? Of course, his dad was a detective so he probably had to work with cops and other confident-ish people, so maybe that was why–
He didn't exactly expect the kid to answer; part of him assumed the other guy would just try to escape as soon as possible. He looked a little uncomfortable; it didn't deter Ash at all–nothing ever did–but hey, he knew what to expect, so when Sello didn't leave, and more, actually answered his question, his pleasant surprise showed as a grin on his mouth.
"Cool, I wish I was an art kid, ya know? I'm not really great at drawing but I used to doodle a lot," he shrugged, before hearing the name of the school. Kennedy?
"Oh shit!" he exclaimed, jumping back, "dude, I go there too! I mean, probably everyone in the neighborhood does but like, dude! We could've had the same classes or something! Wait, does Mrs. Tillbury still work there? She was my college counselor last year, god she hated me. Said I had a motor for a mouth or something. Always tried to move me away from my friends because I talked too much; hah joke's on you, Mrs. Tillbury, I talk to anyone even if we're not friends."

Sello was still looking at his fingers, wondering if he was missing something when the other kid began talking about art. He glanced away and began fiddling with his headphones again. Ah, maybe he shouldn’t have said something; he could barely draw to save his life. But music counted as art though, right? He liked sounds and—
The loud swear scared him and he jumped back as well, whipping his head towards him with wide eyes. He glanced around as well to see if there was anything alarming although when Ash continued along saying he went to Kennedy too, Sello slowly loosened into a more pleasant sense of surprise. Huh, what were the odds? The mention of Mrs. Tillbury made him let out a breath of a laugh, leaving a small smile.
“Yeah, she does,” he said. He didn’t have a problem with her since he never opened his mouth, but he’s heard enough. He took another glance at the other kid as he went through his memory. He imagined he would have remembered him if they had a class together.
“Did you, graduate already?” He asked.

Ash grinned as the other kid seemed to relax. At least the kid didn't look like he had just been stuck with a murderer for a group project, or worse, a kid who barely could make a C in the easiest math class. He didn't really talk much. Sello was kind of quiet, and he looked a little...shy? Embarrassed maybe? Still, it wasn't a deterrent to Ash's never-ending conversation.
His face turned red at the other kid's question. Right, graduating. He had almost graduated. They had allowed him to walk the stage and get the little piece of paper, but actually getting his diploma? Not quite. He hadn't admitted to anyone but his inability to focus on anything had always put him behind work, and this year was no different. He just found it difficult to follow anyone, and the fact that he was absolutely horrible at reading didn't help. The words just never seemed to make sense; he always took so long reading a passage that by the time he was finished, eveyone was five pages ahead.
"Uh..." he replied with an awkward laugh, "let's just say I'm almost there." He still had to take two summer courses to finish, considering how badly he had flunked their final biology project. Not to mention he had been held back in english literature; he just didn't understand the books they were reading. He'd blame the shifting letters for that.
His feet were shuffling and his hands were stuffed in his pocket. "I'm not really a favorite student, let's just say. Think Mrs. Tillbury kinda dropped my grade because of how annoying she thinks I am."

Almost there? Sello waited some more, anticipating a torrent of explanations, so when he was met with silence, his eyes widened a little and he kept his eyes down. Almost there...Oh. Maybe he shouldn’t have said anything. Sello didn’t have the most perfect grades ever, but he’s never failed a class or had to retake. He wanted to cruise by just fine though of course not everyone was the same. People learned differently, and that was fine, he didn’t judge.
He took a glance at Ash from the corner of his eye, noticing the redness and awkward shuffling, and he smiled a small, sympathetic smile. He knew that feeling all too well, and he was surprised such a seemingly confident kid could have awkward moments too. Although, it made him seem more, human. The other boy seemed so different from him, but as time went one he realized they had a lot more in common than he thought.
“I don’t think you are,” he said. The words tumbling out surprised him, and he scratched the back of his head before he continued with a more careful sense of mind.
“Uh, annoying, that is. I don’t, think you are,” he added more quietly. Maybe that was just his nature, but he didn’t mind him. Well, now he didn’t; he was pretty scared at first but when was he not terrified around strangers.

Ash hadn't exactly realized how embarrassing it felt, to be practically held back in the same grade as someone who was younger. It had never really occurred to him, or maybe he had just never paused long enough to realize it. His younger brother was in the same grade as him, and sometimes he wondered whether his adopted parents ever regret getting a handful like him.
Still, he didn't realize he had gone silent until Sello spoke. Oh, huh. For a moment, he simply stared at the other kid, before a smile slowly grew on his face. That was a rare statement to hear. His cheeks were warm, and he quickly looked away.
"That's just because you haven't hung out long enough with me yet," he laughed, an effort to make him feel a little less awkward at receiving any sort of compliment, "even my best friend thinks I'm annoying sometimes, so you know, give me a couple of days and you'll probably share the same opinion." He did make fun of his friends a lot, and that paired with his constant chatter at all times made him insufferable at times.
"So you're still in high school," he thought out loud, "so any cool plans? Parties? I remember some of the underclassmen were pretty crazy. Not sure if they'd be partying on a weekday though. Or are you studying for exams soon? I mean, you're probably going to go off to college next year...or not, I dunno."
Hey, if the other kid didn't have plans, maybe he'd want to grab a pizza. Ash was still eyeing that two for one deal, even if Emeline wasn't here for it.

Sello smiled when Ash began talking again, letting out a mental sigh that the other boy didn’t find the comment weird. “—hung out long enough with me yet.” Yet. He wondered...no he probably shouldn’t think too much about it. He could say the same thing about himself really; he wasn’t much for conversation, and Ash could realize that soon enough.
At the mention of plans, Sello snapped out of his thoughts and glanced over at him before quickly looking back at his shoes. Cool plans?
“Oh, like tonight?” He said. If anything, his errands were his plans for the day. The mention of partying made him lightly bite his lower lip, worrying it as he thought. He wasn’t really a party person, not that he was invited to them anyway. He only had a couple friends and they usually met in the gaming world. They didn’t get on until after midnight though, so it was just himself for a while. Studying was out of the question though—no way he was doing that—but he didn’t have anything else to share. Partying was cool, studying was productive, he was just, nothing.
“I was, um, going home. That’s not very interesting though, sorry,” he said. He didn’t mind being alone, he was only embarrassed admitting it.

Ash almost let out a sigh of relief when the other kid admitted to not having plans. In a strange way, he kind of liked this guy. At least Sello hadn't told him to fuck right off yet, he thought. People weren't too kind to talkative strangers in this city most of the time, especially punk-ass kids like himself.
"Oh that's cool!" he exclaimed, a little too excitedly, "I mean, my favorite pizza place does this buy one get one free thing? Like, totally cool if you don't want to but my flatmate's being a total bitch–or well, her boss is being a bitch and she's doing overtime tonight which means I don't get my pizza." He pouted, looking over to Sello.
"I mean, totally not saying you're just a replacement for her, and this isn't me like...hitting on you or anything but you know, free pizza and they actually do the good stuff too! It's sourdough crust and everything. Just...if you're not planning anything, wanna grab a discount pizza slice?"
Was he being weird? This was totally not weird, right? Asking a stranger to grab some food with him...then again, the other kid was nice and Ash really could use more friends and some decent company–and of course, cheap pizza–and if Sello didn't mind...it'd be more fun than going home, in his opinion.

Sello expected the conversation to drop or become drier, so the excitement he received startled him, making him glance over at Ash with wide eyes. Pizza? Oh. He listened quietly and averted his gaze when the other boy looked his way, but a faint smile still crept onto his face. He didn’t really believe that he wasn’t a replacement—this situation wouldn’t have happened at all if his flatmate wasn’t working. But, he was still a choice, even if he was a second choice, wasn’t he? That had to mean something.
“Oh, o-okay. Sure,” he said. He hadn’t had pizza in a while...
Only when the words left his mouth did he realize what he got himself into. Sello gulped. Had he lost his mind? What was he doing, agreeing to plans, with a stranger on top of that. Oh no he was totally getting kidnapped. No no, Ash is cool, he thought although he casted another sideways look at him just in case.
“I mean, it’s not far from here, though, right?” He added more hesitantly. He could have agreed to getting pizza out of state for all he knew.

If anything, Ash hadn't expected the other kid to agree at all. "Really?" he grinned, an extra skip to his step, "oh that's great! The pizza place is honestly amazing, they do this one pizza with n'duja...like, some weird spicy sausage, and like, it sounds weird right...but it's honestly so good?"
He glanced around, looking for the street. Bodega, that second-hand clothing shop, crossroads...hm they weren't too far from the pizza place now. "I think it should be around the corner over there," he pointed to a street down, "I usually go there because it's close by but I swear, one of the best pizzas you can get in the city. I bet you like, five dollars on that." Not that he was ever going to give the other kid five dollars but hey, he had a point to prove.
"What kind of food do you like anyway?" he inquired, "I'm not just dragging you around, right? Because if you actually secretly hate pizza but you're just being nice, you don't have to come." He was giving the other guy an out, just in case.
