A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

I know a trick to make a man's colors show / If he sees something he wants, tell him no

"What. The. Fuck." Bea was speachless. As in, there were no words. She had a fleeting wish to be the one cowering behind someone instead of the other way around, but forced herself to focus on the problem at hand - more accurately, the problem on his knees, in front of her. "You said your name was Akiahr, right?" she began gently, not wanting to frighten the obviously unwell man. "I don't, uh, need you for payment. I need money, you see, it's something--"
She was cut off when the delicate bell over the front door tingled and announced a visitor. Great. Just when all Hell was breaking loose, now someone was here? She raised her eyes, preparing to tell the person to leave when an all-too-familiar voice greeted her. "Ah...um, Eme? This isn't a great time. You see, there's a man - Akiahr - here that broke in the back and destroyed a lot of my stuff and is now offering himself to me?"
The end of her sentence was definitely a question, but to who? Eme? Akiahr? The world? She had no clue. "But you should stay away. I don't want you to get hurt. He isn't well," she added in a lower voice, hoping to evade the intruder's hearing. "Sello should have already called the police, so we just need to stay nice and calm and relaxed until they get here, alright?"
She felt herself shaking slightly as she shock of the encounter set in. She was entirely unprepared if the man in front of her decided to get violent. The only thing standing between her and a hospital bed was Akiahr's self-control, and judging by the strange way he was presenting himself on the ground, it wasn't exactly reliable.

Akiahr
It appeared that the female wanted him to remain in a submissive posture, which he was quite able to do for an extended amount of time. However it occurred to him that since this was a human, she might not exactly understand what was happening.
His head still bowed he said, "I have no money. I only have me. I can work, if you wish. I am not here to injure anyone."
Unless they tried to do harm to him or the females in the store. Then they'd be in a bit of trouble.
"I will defend your store for you if that is what you desire."

Emeline would say that she had met enough strange people in her life that nothing really phased her anymore, but this was beyond strange. She was immediately on the defense. Whatever that creature was, it had done all of...that. There was a broken door and some destroyed boxes and splinters of wood and metal strewn along the ground. Not to mention the absolute mess and the imperceptible shake in Bea's voice, and yeah, that wasn't going to fly by her.
It wasn't that Emeline didn't like men, but she had met enough men in her life who left nothing but ashes in their wake, who simply took and took and took and never returned the favor. Even now, she held her tongue when Mikeal snapped at her for working too slowly, held her tongue when her brother lectured her on how she was disappointing her parents, held her tongue when her father used his words to hint his disappointment with what she had chosen to do with her life. She had held her tongue when Lance had shouted, when he had screamed and thrown things, when he had gotten violent, all until the day she snapped.
Her mind ran wild with what possibilities there were, for a man to break into a flowershop when it was simply Bea and her assistant working here, and suddenly, she was seething. The gall of this man! Immediately grabbing Bea's wrist, she pulled the other girl back. She didn't care if this man was dangerous or not, he wasn't going near the other girl. She stood in front of Bea defensively.
"Who the fuck are you and what the hell do you think you're doing?!" she snapped, for once, allowing anger to fill her voice, "defend her store? You nearly fucking broke everything! Do you know how much it's going to take to fix everything? You break into a store, destroy all of her work, and now you expect her to give you a job?"
She turned to Bea, as if telling her to go get Sello and to find some help before anything happened.
"The only thing you'll be defending is yourself when you get to court for breaking and entering," she scowled, her fists clenched. Huh, funny, if one paid attention to the ink marring her arms, one could almost swear the watery threads seemed as if they were moving.

Akiahr
Obviously the misunderstanding was not being remedied with this course of action. Slowly he stood, so as to not alarm the three individuals in front of him any more than they already were. He carefully replaced the iris in the vase. The Zaraii contemplated the trio.
The new female had mentioned court. Would this be where he had been sent to? His owner's court met often and he was generally drafted to serve at these meetings. As for defending himself, maybe a pit fight had been scheduled?
To the forefront stood the little, angry female. His quick eyes noticed the strange skin that seemed to change color and move. She was very interesting as he'd only seen this on one other race, a reptilian one and they could camouflage themselves within the jungle in which they lived. Like the cat that had been his forefathers, he was terribly curious about her. First things first.
"I am Akiahr. I am Zaraii. I was shipped here as a goodwill gesture on behalf of my people to cement trade relations. I was left in my crate at a warehouse. Someone was supposed to come and get me. They didn't. Another female freed me and I left the warehouse to come into this city."
His expression remained rather stony. He didn't know what to expect from these three. Like an artist's sculpture of a perfect creature, he stood watching them carefully. Angry females often had whips.
"I was under the impression that this was a food depot. I have not eaten in some time, except for the meat from the hot cart near the park. I can help."
At that the Zaraii stalked around Bea, Emeline and Sello. With one hand, he easily picked the broken door off the floor and leaned it against the wall. The small bits were too difficult for him to handle, so he brushed them as close to the door as possible. Then he surveyed the rest of the store. Most of the vases were still upright, although the arrangements within them were cockeyed. He could do nothing about that. Instead he again passed by the trio and righted anything that was knocked over, replacing the flowers carefully using his claw tipped fingers. Once he'd done as much as he could, he searched for anything that would move the leaves scattered on the floor. For those, he would need something like a broom.
The Zaraii returned to face the humans and asked, "Do you have a broom or anything like a broom?"
He wasn't exactly sure what this society was about. He would need information and perhaps someone to teach him about being here. Everything was terribly different here. Perhaps he had been better off in the crate?

Sello had nodded at what Bea said, and followed her command.
“O-Okay, uh,” he murmured. His hand shook as he reached for his phone and he could barely see as he pressed the numbers. He didn’t imagine today would be his first time calling 911.
“Um, there’s been a-a break in…Wallflower florists...um I-I dunno I...Uh, male, long black hair, really, tall...Me and another person...No...I-I don’t think so...okay, thank you,” he said.
Just as he hung up, the door opened and Sello thought, That was fast! However, when he turned, he jumped at the loud noise. She seemed to know Bea, but his senses were so on edge that he was still wary. He remained quiet as he let the conversation transpire, and he tried not to flinch at the yelling even if it wasn’t directed at him.
At the intruder’s words, he knitted his eyebrows together as he listened. A Za—what? However, he didn’t have much time to think about it as his next words sent chills down his spine.
“Ea-eaten?” He repeated. He was going to eat them? It was that thought that sent his stress levels to unbearable heights, and before he knew it, his knees got weak and his vision was blacking out. He fell on the floor, much like the scattered plucked leaves.

Akiahr
The Zaraii watched with curiosity as the little fluffy haired male collapsed. The fellow looked a little like he'd had his strings cut like a puppet. Before anyone else could act, Akiahr was beside his unconscious form. The floor didn't look comfortable, especially for one who'd fallen in a pile. Carefully, Akiahr slipped his strong arms under the male and lifted him easily in his arms.
"Do you have a place for this one to lie down?" the Zaraii asked.
Although he wasn't fond of other males, it wouldn't be a good thing to leave one lying around. Akiahr had fallen asleep in some strange positions himself and he knew what it felt like to wake up with a bit of a cramp. He was certain that the females would want to take care of the fallen one.

The relief Bea felt when she saw Emeline was almost immeasurable. Suddenly, the colossal task before her didn't seem quite so insurmountable. When the other girl's hand closed around her wrist, she felt heat rise to her cheeks even as she grew more worried. Why was she putting herself between the intruder and her? "Eme," she said quietly after she'd spoken. "Come back a little. I don't want you hurt." She gave a little tug on her wrist, but dropped her hand altogether when Sello fell to the ground.
"Sello!" she cried, rushing to his side and checking his pulse. "God, the poor guy is out cold," she said, regretting everything that had happened that day already. "At least he called the cops before-" She was cut off when Akiahr came towards her and went to pick up Sello. "No, stop!" she said, eyes narrowed with protective anger that was searching for an outlet, "Don't you touch him." Her brown eyes sparked with fury and a little fear, finding it impossible to stop the implacable man now lifting Sello into his arms.
He asked for where to put Sello, and all she could think was her room upstairs. She looked to Eme helplessly, unsure what to do. "My bedroom is upstairs," she said softly to the other girl, her hand bumping Eme's questioningly. "We could take him up there, but I'm afraid it would be inappropriate. Plus, the police should be here soon, right?" She looked over at Sello's limb body in Akiahr's arms and felt impotent rage begin to simmer in her. First this man broke into her shop and trashed it -- even if he tried to clean it up -- and now he was basically holding a kid hostage?
"Though it might be best if Sello isn't in his arms when the cops come...just in case," she added in a worried whisper.

She didn't know the other kid, but she knew he was probably important to Bea. She knew if anyone hurt her coworkers, even the grumpy one, she'd throw a fit about it. Then whatever the creature was came over and actually picked up the boy, and suddenly, Emeline felt a stab of fear through her chest. Fuck, was he going to hurt the kid? He had broken in, destroyed half the shop, and Bea had already mentioned she thought he was crazy or something...
Then Bea's rage was almost palpable, and Emeline turned to the other girl, her eyes flashing with an anger she hadn't seen before. She didn't exactly hear the other girl; the only thing she could feel was the helplessness they felt, hanging heavy in the air, and if there was anything she hated, it was that exact feeling. Helplessness.
Her ink reacted naturally to it. It was just the way her powers were. They had only truly activated once before–when Lance had his fingers around her throat–and it was happening again. All of a sudden, the thin lines of ink seemed to slither off her arms, coming alive into thick inky ropes of matter. She gasped, as her arm automatically moved upwards, and suddenly the ink was lashing towards Akiahr, and she had no control over it.
"Shit," she gasped, eyes wide in fear, for both Bea and of her own gift, "get away from the kid!"

Akiahr
Things seemed to be spiralling out of control, the Zaraii thought. First they thought that he was some sort of criminal and now they seemed to think that he was a raging fiend. He was quite at a loss for what to do and now they wanted him to drop the little fluffy haired male? What did they think he was going to do to the creature? Eat him?
He waited quietly for the females to decide where they wanted the little male to be placed. He figured that after he had put the fallen male where they wished, he should probably leave the same way he came and head back into the depths of the park to gather his thoughts.
When the tension in the room built to a point where Akiahr could practically see it, something odd happened. The pictures on the newcomer's arms appeared to come to life. At her cry, Akiahr had to make a quick decision. He spun in place and crouched over the little male, to protect him from whatever was happening. The Zaraii's broad back would take the brunt of whatever kind of attack the newcomer was performing.
The Zaraii cradled the smaller man gently as he shielded him from whatever was coming. He doubted that his own body would take any lasting harm from this strange assault, but if this was how he was to end his life, then so be it. At least he had been free for a short time.

Bea's eyes widened when Eme's tattoos began to slither off of her arms like live wires, and for once she felt fear not of just the intruder, but her friend as well. "Emeline!" she gasped, reaching out to grab her arm and then thinking better of it. "What are you doing?" She felt her chest growing tight and her head begin to spin as an anxiety attack loomed. Forcing herself to focus on her breathing and count each breath, she began to get the fear under control when she saw the creature hunch over Sello...protectively?
Her thoughts were running together and her extreme emotions made it hard to tell if she was overreacting or not. "Just put him down and go!" she shouted at the intruder, squeezing her eyes shut in an attempt to hold herself together. "Just go!" What had started as a normal, if slow, day had morphed into some nightmare she'd never imagined: her gir- her friend manifesting her tattoos somehow? a huge man tearing down her door and eating her flowers, and her prospective employee getting held hostage and fainting.

Akiahr
Whether Bea had accepted his service or not, Akiahr had offered himself to her and he stood by that. His kind were hardwired to protect and guard. This little male was Bea's too and he wouldn't stand a chance against what the Zaraii felt was coming.
As the ink inexorably wormed its way towards him and his responsibility, he called out, "No! He will die!"
Akiahr braced himself for the impact of whatever this attack would be. This smaller male would not die on his watch. However if Bea wished the newcomer taken care of, that depended very much on what condition the Zaraii was in after shielding his charge.

Emeline knew a few things about herself. One, her ink was an extension of herself. Her own creativity, her own design, her own sense of self. Two, she could bring it to life. She didn't know how, where, what, or why. She just knew it existed. Three, the last time she had done this...she didn't speak of it. Whoever else was involved knew the pact. It never happened.
There was a reason she kept a cap over her emotions, why she was known for keeping her calm, both at work and at home. Rarely did anything create enough of a stir for her to lose control, but seeing Bea and the other boy potentially getting hurt...now that had brought something out of her, darker than even the ink that marred her skin.
It lashed out, the ink wrapping itself around the larger male, grasping him down and pulling him towards the ground, while thinner strands slashed at the creature's skin.
"Get away from him!" she snarled once again, "and leave this place already!" She was beyond reasoning with; all she needed to do was to make sure the young boy was okay, and to get rid of whatever this creature was destroying her friend's flower shop.

Akiahr
When the ink pulled at him, all the Zaraii did was brace himself. He'd been whipped before in his life and this was similar. One simply had to live through it. At the newcomer's words, Akiahr wondered who was doing the most damage right now, him or this person who attacked him? No matter what, he had to keep this small male safe.
With a titanic bellow, Akiahr rose to his feet, sheltering the little male in his arms. He was quite sore now but he ignored the pain. It was nothing compared to some of the things he'd been through. The Zaraii powered through the lashing ink and out to the dock. As soon as he was away from the two females, he searched for a comfortable place to set the male down. He found a spot on some boxes full of leaves and stems, the very one he'd been snacking from earlier and carefully laid the male on them.
Then he took two steps towards the alley and went to his knees. He knew what was coming. He would sleep until he was rested enough to move. Generally this was done in a safe place, but there was no safe place here. Three days of no rest and constantly being on the move took its toll. He could only trust that if those inside tried to kill him, he would wake up in time, because despite his immense will, he could move no more and he fell onto his side and into a deep sleep.

Only a few minutes later, sirens sounded from a distance. The police were on their way. A squad car pulled up in front of the flower shop and two officers got out. They strode over to the store and entered.
