A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

So he had noticed.
Tobias wanted to cringe on the inside, but he knew there was no use in hiding that he had done exactly what he had done just now. He couldn't even deny it; he was careless and clumsy, and he knew if some of the other hunters had seen him just now, they would've called him out on it too. He ran a hand through his hair, as he glanced at the thief with a frown. All of this for a stupid purse, he thought dryly, before glancing to Declan again.
"Yeah uh," he let out a dry chuckle, "let's just say I wasn't always a private investigator I guess. Um...you have something to do after this? If you really wanna know, I could use a beer or something after this chase, if I'm honest. There's a decent sports bar not far from here if you're up for it; I think we both deserve a bit of a break after this don't you think?"
He wasn't the kind of person who shared much about his life, but he had found that he actually enjoyed having a friend that didn't think of him as just the leader of a band of misfits. Someone who he could hang out without the great looming threat of the death of humanity due to other creatures. For that, he could at least divulge certain things in his past, things that didn't have to do with hunting.

Sports bar? Declan couldn't hide a surprised chuckle at the suggestion that seemed almost out of the blue. "Sure, I guess that sounds good!" He ran his fingers through his hair, quickly retying what had come lose during the chase. "The cops should be here in a sec, and I'm sure that lady won't be long behind to get her purse back." He looked down at the guy on the ground, an annoyed expression taking over. "Too bad this ass had to ruin things like this."
He would be cautious around Tobias, but his explanation was reasonable and some of the pack had accused Declan of being too suspicious in the past. Deciding to ignore his gut and just go with the flow, he waved down the cops, gave a quick statement, handed over the woman's purse, and turned to Tobias when all was said and done.
"If that didn't work up an appetite, I don't know what will," he said with a lopsided grin. "I'm thinking a Guinness and some wings sound good right about now." He watched the blue and red lights fade in the distance as the cops took care of the crook, and he turned back to look at Tobias with an expectant look.

The sports bar wasn't far. He led the way, a five-minute walk down the street to a place he was familiar with. He had been here enough times on his own, the sound of people cheering for their teams enough to mask the fact that he was here alone most of the time. The noise and the babble was enough of a distraction to keep him from thinking of anything else. Some days he wanted peace of mind–something that he found impossible to get these days–but some days he just wanted white noise to fill the emptiness.
"Go grab a seat," he encouraged Declan before gesturing to the bar, "I'll go grab us a couple of drinks? You can get the second round or something." He wanted to be nice at least, and after that chase, the other guy deserved a bit of a treat. Tobias wasn't one to keep people close, but it had been a while since he had actually sat down for something other than business. It was...nice, he decided. It reminded him of the old days, with his buddies downtown. Those were golden times, innocent ones, he thought, as he quickly ordered, returning to the table with their drinks, and a plate of loaded fries as well.
"I probably have a lot of explaining to do, don't I?" he laughed awkwardly, running his hands over the top of his head as if smoothing down his hair, "I wasn't lying to you about the kickboxing, just so you know. Didn't mean to scare you like that earlier, guess it was just a natural reaction." He could tell the other man had questions, and he would answer them as long as it meant he could keep the hunters a secret too.

"Can't say I was scared....more shocked, I suppose." Declan raised his glass to Tobias after he got back, then took a deep drink. The walk over had been somewhat awkward, though he was relieved it wasn't him being questioned about his background. "I didn't think I knew everything about you, but having what looks to be a black belt in MMA did come as a bit of a surprise." He laughed, grabbing a couple of fries and digging in. So it wasn't the best place to find himself after working out, but he could use a cheat day and this was as good a reason as any.
"But now I am curious. How did you learn how to move like that? It was incredible, really. I've never seen anything like it." Declan wasn't lying, per se. He'd never seen a mundane human move like that; such feats weren't all that unheard of in the supernatural community. "Before you tell me, let me guess," he said, eating another handful of fries. "You're...ex-military. Or, no, ex-military and a former body guard of some super important politician. Was I close?"

He had expected it to be a brief, perhaps awkward affair, asking questions and all. He was already taking a long sip from his beer, the foam gathering on his mustache. "I'll take that as a compliment," he mused, clinking his glass against the other man's. He knew fries weren't exactly the healthiest food, but frankly, there were days when chicken caesar salads just didn't do it.
Today was definitely one of those days.
Tobias didn't necessarily enjoy divulging information on his past, but then again, people in his past barely knew who he was now. The only person he still met up with was perhaps one former friend and his ex-wife when she finally agreed to bring their son over. He had sworn to never step foot in Chicago again, and he still hadn't gone back on his word.
"Mm, you're on your way, but not exactly. I used to live in Chicago back in the 80s?" he offered with a small smile, "grew up there, became a cop, thought I could do some good in the world and all that jazz. I didn't think police training was enough, you know, they give you a few good weeks to learn how to use a gun and that's about it, but I grew up in those communities they were policing, ya know?"
He shrugged. "They call 'em pigs for a reason, I guess," he sighed, "but I went out of my way to learn how to fight so if I didn't have to shoot a kid, I wouldn't."
Oh how things had changed since then, but hey, that was his truth.
"–and what about you? You're definitely a lot sharper than you seem," he smirked, "that's not an insult, by the way. Just...not a lot of people would've noticed someone getting mugged and actually go after them, ya know?"

Declan listened as he ate, pausing when Tobias explained his motivation behind learning how to fight. It sounded like something he'd do, honestly. "A cop, huh? Explains a lot, actually. Thanks for serving and all that shit. Why'd you leave the force? It's not particularly lucrative but you also don't seem like the quitting type to me. Drama in the force?"
He pondered Tobias' question for a moment, not rushing to reply right away. How to respond that wouldn't give away his particular affliction. "Yeah, my parents raised me up strict, y'know? MMA classes, self-defense, that kinda thing. Guess my training kicked in before I could use my brain." He laughed, hoping to dispel any awkwardness. "I hate seeing people being taken advantage of, I guess. Always has bugged me to see people suffer for someone else's greed or benefit."
sorry it's so short :c

(no worries bb!)
That, he could relate to.
Tobias gave him a faint smile, his weary expression telling a different story. He debated whether to tell the truth or not; it was...complicated. These were topics he left out of conversations because they just ruined the mood every time. How did a person just casually mention a decision that had ruined his whole life? He had grown numb to it, but an acquaintance didn't need to know everything, right?
"Don't thank me," he sighed, "honestly, you'll find it weird for me to say this but cops are bastards." He had let things slide for years because he thought they were worth sacrificing things for, and it had been...a waste. "I hate seeing people get the short end of the stick too," he chuckled, "I think that's why I joined back when I was younger. Thought I could make a difference in the community too, ya know?"
He took a sip of the beer. "After a while, you see a couple of things, realize that...not everything's as clear as day. Chicago when I was growing up...wasn't a pretty place, you know?" he mused, keeping his voice even, "after a while, you stop trusting the system when you know they don't have your back either."
He shrugged. "Guess you can say it was drama," his voice was a lot softer now, "I couldn't stand knowing what I was contributing to, you know?" He had made too many mistakes, gotten too sloppy, until the force knew he wasn't going to stay quiet, and that had been his downfall.

"Well damn," said Lorcan, shaking his head ruefully. "I guess I have a talent for bringing up depressing shit, huh?" He sat his head on his hand, wishing he was a better conversationalist. "I'm glad you're out of Chicago, at least. Though NYC isn't much better, Chicago is a dangerous place to be right now. You a cop here in New York?"
He stretched his arms above him, trying to tune out the loud voices of a particularly drunk group at the bar. He didn't mind living in the city most of the time, but his wolf was on edge after the chase and the raucous partying was slowly grating on his nerves. He finished his beer with a long swallow, then looked over at Tobias' glass. "You need a refill? My treat this time."

He laughed quietly, waving it off. "It's not a big deal, it's...in the past, I guess," he shrugged, "I uh...had a wake-up call and a career change after that. "I'm a private investigator now, you know, getting involved in other people's business and all that I suppose. Not all that much better, but at least you get control over what you do...to some degree."
He glanced to the group that seemed intent on making sure everyone else knew their business. "New York City's all right I guess, you grow up here? Or moved here like I did?"
The man smiled at. "Yeah sure, I'll have a Guinness, if that's all right."

Declan's expression became interested when Tobias shared his current job, eyes betrayed the questions he had about it though he kept quiet until Tobias finished. "Yeah, I'll grab it real quick, but then I have like, so many questions." The shifter wasted no time getting to the bar and ordering their drinks, though he had to keep his mind on his conversation to keep from getting riled by the over-zealous partiers nearby.
When he got back to their booth, he slid Tobias his Guinness and cracked open his own, taking a long drink before launching into his questions. "So you wear a bowler hat, smoke a cigar, call women 'tall drinks of water' and constantly monologue to yourself, right?" He couldn't keep from chuckling, wondering what stereotypes about private investigators he forgot. "Oh yeah, and your life is somehow in black and white too, right?"

Tobias let out one of his rare laughs. "I'm nothing like the movies I'm afraid," he chuckled, "except maybe the alcohol bit. I suppose I do like my whisky a lot more than I should." He'd never admit to having just a little bit of a drinking problem; it was his own demon to deal with.
"I feel like our reputation is more like...sleazy creepers who catch husbands cheating on their wives and threaten them with blackmail these days," he snorted, amused, "don't know if I have enough to say to do a full monologue, but I guess if you ever need dirt on someone you know who to find."
A dry chuckle left his mouth. "I guess it's a whole lot different from being a firefighter though," he mused almost wistfully, "sometimes I think I should've gone into that if I wanted to make a difference instead of the police force, ya know?"

"I dunno," shrugged Declan, taking a sip of his beer. "I mean, working at the station is great, don't get me wrong. I wouldn't trade it for the world, the brothers and sisters I work with are some of the best people I've ever met. But... I mean, I guess we need cops too, right?" He ran his hand through his hair, realizing he was making a mess of it.
"I'm just trying to say, like, cops get a bad rap. Especially now. But without them, we'd have our work cut out for us. It's always you guys there are we leave, figuring out what happened and how to help and all that. We just do the physical stuff." He took another drink, allowing the loud crowd at the bar to fill the silence for a bit.
"I told you the stereotypes about your job, but now I guess you have the advantage on me. Firefighters are pretty cut and dry. What about you? Like...what's a job you've been on recently?" He grinned ruefully and added, "I might've been one of the folks that considered PIs sleazebags but I can see now that isn't the case."
