Hunter, Dakhan and McRorie
It was hot. Really, really hot. The apartment didn't have air conditioning yet. It was in the offing, since the store itself had air condtioning, so it shouldn't be hard to run it upstairs as well. She'd already made the appointment, but that was next week and they were all hot right now. Hunter had closed the store and packed lunches. She'd filled the mini van with towels and beach unbrellas. There were chairs and lotion. Lots of water for McRorie. Soft drinks for her and Dakhan. She wore her bathing suit under her shorts, but the most she could do with Dakhan was get him into shorts and a tank top.
"You're going to fry," she warned him on the way over to the beach.
Dakhan gave her a thin smile, "No I won't. I plan to stay under the umbrella."
Hunter shook her head ruefully.
"Well, I for one, am going to be up to my neck in water!" She vowed.
Eventually she pulled into a dusty parking lot and hopped out of the van. As soon as she slid the side door open, McRorie jumped out and started panting. His tongue was already dripping. He whined.
"Okay, okay," Hunter soothed him, "We're nearly there. I'll get you some water as soon as we get set up."
She handed Dakhan two beach umbrellas and a tote full of towels. She hung a few more towels over McRorie's strong back. Then she loaded her little garden sled with everything else. After sliding the door shut and locking up the van, Hunter and her troupe set off for the beach.
Hunter had to pause and enjoy the view for a few moments when they crested a dune. The ocean seemed to stretch endlessly into the distance, becoming one with the hot blue sky. The sun beat down from on high like a hammer to an anvil. With a happy sigh, she led her group to an area far enough from the other beach goers as to be polite and a little private.
While she and Dakhan set up their 'camp,' McRorie shook off the towels and took off for the ocean at a loose limbed gallop. He hit the water with a tremendous splash and jumped around in the surf like a puppy, biting at the foam and charging each wave. Finally, soaking wet, he trotted back to Hunter and Dakhan, waiting until he was right beside them to shake.
"Hey!" Yelled Dakhan, "you've got me soaked!"
If a cu could laugh, well McRorie would have been clutching his belly with mirth. Then he stretched out under an umbrella to wait for his bowl of water. Hunter poured him a large bowlful and parked it beside him. Dakhan chose a beach chair under the second umbrella and hooked a cola out of a cooler with deft fingers. Hunter stripped off her shorts and flung them on the second beach chair.
"I'm not wasting one second out of that water," she crowed, "I'm going to soak up every drop of it like a sponge!"
She charged down to the water and splashed into with glee. When she was far enough out, she dove into the cool saltiness.
From his beach chair, Dakhan watched her, a smile playing on his lips. Hunter was a lovely young lady, slender and well built, not overly lush. More on the athletic side, he thought. In fact, he thought of her as something of a younger sister and treated her accordingly. He was an old enough vampire that he could rein in his blood lust. He saved it for the nighttime, when he walked the streets, seeing the sites and hunting.
He never had any trouble finding a meal. Most women were really taken by his boyish beauty. It was almost child's play to convince them to take him to their rooms for some bed play. He never killed his prey. He always left them alive and sleeping, while he ghosted out and home to the apartment he shared with Hunter. His victims were always left with a longing for something they couldn't exactly place. And they were tired.
Now he and McRorie watched over Hunter as she swam and cooled off.
"Well old man," Dakhan addressed the cu, "We've got our jobs planned out, haven't we? Actually I haven't had this much to do in ages."
McRorie grunted and lay his head between his huge paws, his eyes on Hunter and any perceived threat to her. The air was filled with a briny tang. He smelled birds and small animals and shells. There was an undercurrent of vampire, which came from Dakhan, and he could detect other supernaturals too. Soon, damp and cool, he flopped over onto his side and closed his eyes. His ears and nose remained on duty.
He fell asleep to the sounds of happy swimmers , sunbathers and little children, all enjoying the cool ocean on this sweltering day.
