A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

(~two years ago)
Emeline sat on the rugged couch, tapping her foot on the ground in a jittery manner, her own nerves deciding to act up right now. She had been in contact with Jack for a while. He had gone to the same university as her brother after all, and he was a pretty cool guy. She had met him a few times, and well, they had similar interests after all. Despite her family's wishes for her to get into finance, medicine or law, she knew she'd never do well in any of them. At first, she had wanted him to train her, but he had mentioned that if she wanted to do florals, Mikeal was a better choice.
She was about to meet the guy who'd train her, and she didn't really know what to think. She had seen his instagram, and his flowers were gorgeous really. It'd be perfect, even if she wasn't 100% sure that this was what she wanted to do. In fact, she wasn't really sure about anything in life. Things were complicated and she had yet to admit to her parents that she didn't really want to go to study business anymore. She hated university–not so much the people as much as the classes–and honestly, it was all a waste of money, to pursue something she hated.
It was the first time in years she had actually actively chosen to do something, and she was still unsure whether this was a good idea or not.

(Sorry been busy and haven't had a chance to get on)
Mikeal had been furious to hear that he was getting stuck with some apprentice. Sure they all had to start somewhere but he wasn't exactly the type of guy to train someone. His patience extended to hours on end of working on a tattoo, but didn't go further than that or towards people. The Russian-American never had the temper to deal with people. It was a flaw, he knew he had it but still. Stepping out of his studio area, he moved to the lobby where he spotted the jittery girl who'd be in his care. God, All-Mighty, was Jack gonna be hearing it from him. "You just gonna sit there all day!" His voice was angry, gruff, mostly because he'd just finished being told by Jack that he was training this girl. Probably a good thing he waited because Mikeal would have done everything in his power to get out of this if he'd had the chance, but here they were five minutes after arguing with the boss about trying to not be in charge of this pipsqueak.

(no worries! samesies LOL I'm on my first week of freedom after quarantine so I've been out a lot)
Oh, great. Emeline was a bit taken aback at the first impression, and she couldn't help the way her throat tightened at the angry voice. Jesus, were all men like this? Constantly angry and shouting? Her hands curled up into fists, a reproachful gaze fixed on Mikeal. She wanted this apprenticeship–there was little she wanted more than to be able to tattoo these days–but the one thing she couldn't stand was a guy who raised his voice for no reason.
It reminded her all too much of her dad, who's voice was naturally loud when he disagreed even if he didn't mean it, and more so, it reminded her of her ex. Lance was, for better words, someone she was glad to get rid of.
Biting back a sharp reply, she got up, shoving the phone in her back pocket. "What do you need?" her voice was quiet, staying a distance away, as if ready to defend herself.

achromatic "To know why the hell Jack paired you with me. But God knows I won't figure that out." With an eye roll, he motioned for him to follow her to his studio area. There he'd have her drawing for the rest of the day so he could get an idea of where her skill level was and where they'd have to start from there. He'd never trained anyone and had no idea what he was supposed to do with her, but whatever. Sitting down in his rolly chair at his desk, he picked up a notepad that he tended to sketch on and tossed it at her. The tossed a pen. "Get to drawing, kid."

Emeline didn't know much about this guy, but she knew one thing. She wasn't exactly fond of him. Frankly, she didn't know what his problem was; they were just training, he didn't have to be such a prick. Still, she swallowed her pride; if she was going to start a fight, she'd do it when he wasn't around. She hated men who raised their voices, the kind who wanted to scare girls into silence. He reminded her too much of her ex to be comfortable.
She made up her mind to be as civil as possible and to avoid the man as much as she could, at least until Jack took over her training again.
Catching the notebook and pen, she swallowed the lump in her throat. "Got it," she replied, sounding snappier than she wanted to. She could draw all day if he wanted her to, just so she could avoid him. "So what are you going to be teaching me again?"
