A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

(Amberlee and Benjamin Howard have just arrived in the city! Please welcome them. Or don't! But she's looking for somewhere to stay, and hopefully with a roommate who can, against their will or out of the kindness of their heart, watch Benjamin when she's at work. But also someone who'll be able to split the bills with her. )
Amberlee Howard and her son, Benjamin Howard, had just arrived in New York. They'd been on a train for days, traveling from their hometown of Helper, Utah through Chigaco, Illinois, and Cleveland, Ohio before finally arriving in New York City. Pulling all they owned in the single large suitcase behind her, Amberlee kept a stronghold on her son. Meanwhile, Benjamin was busy rubbing his eyes and yawning due to how early it was. 6:00am wasn't the time any five-year-old wanted to be awake. "Momma, I'm hungry." Her soft gaze drifted down the tired boy, then up and around them at the busy street filled with people bustling around, even at this early hour.
"Okay. How about..." She trailed off, searching for somewhere quiet or at least not as crowded that they could fit into with their large suitcase. And hopefully not very expensive, because they were running low on finds and still needed to find somewhere to stay tonight.

Lycari
Lycari put the newspaper down he had found on the cafe's table. He took a sip of his too hot coffee and made a face. Coffee seemed to be either too hot or too cold. He should probably pay more attention to what he was doing, which was sitting and staring at the people who got off the trains.
When a rather lost looking young woman and a small boy followed by a large suitcase wandered out into the street, he understood that they probably felt as lost as he first did when he came into the bustle that was New York. The pair seemed like they could use a bit of help, so he grabbed his coffee and strode over. He came up behind them and then stepped to the side so he wouldn't startle either the woman or her boy.
"Hi," he smiled, "You look like you're new in town."
He realized what a picture he made, with his pale features, tall height and long white hair, dressed in new jeans, a t-shirt and mismatched sneakers. The shifter tried to look as harmless as he could.
"Can I be of any help?"

Amberlee was weary to accept someone random person help, but then what choice did she have? She was new in town and knew nothing about the area. Cautiously, she nodded to the man. Keeping her grip tight on Benjamin's and their suitcase, she started for the cafe the man had just come out of. "I hope so. We're new to town and just arrived, well I suppose it's obvious with the suitcase and all." She tried for a soft smile, but even she could tell she was weary of this stranger and it showed on her face.

Lycari
He guided them over to his table and pulled out a chair for Amberlee. He watched carefully as the little boy climbed sleepily onto a chair before he sat down himself.
"First thing to ask is are you hungry?"
She and the boy looked not only tired, but the way the little fellow was eyeing the sandwich a girl was scarfing down at a nearby table gave it away.
"They have pizza here, and some great sandwiches," he continued. "My treat."
Now that he had a job, he actually had some money and aside from food and lodging, he spent it on very little. He didn't need a lot himself. Every three days, he headed down here to the station to watch and see if anyone else who looked even faintly like him stepped off the rail carriages.
This pair of new arrivals looked as confused as he had felt during his first few days in New York. It was luck that had brought him to Emeline's door and she had gone far beyond what anyone would do to help a stranger. Helping out when there was trouble and strife was part and parcel of Lycari's person, drummed into him by his upbringing in the far north with his tribe.
"I'm sorry but I've not introduced myself," he stuck a long fingered hand over the table towards Amberlee, "Name's Lycari. No last name and I'm not related to that Prince guy."
So many people he'd met had mentioned this, that this answer had become part of his greeting.
"I'm not going to kidnap you, or anything," the shifter added, "You just look a little lost and a lot tired. Do you know where you're going? Do you have someone you can call to come and pick you two up?"
The waitress wandered over with her order book.
"Okay, what you guys want?" She asked, absently tapping her pen on her book.
Expectantly the pale shifter looked at Amberlee.

faith achromatic Amberlee was startled, shocked, and just lost. Here was this kind man offering them dinner and she could barely form the words to thank him. Benjamin was practically falling asleep next to her, but she knew he was hungry as it'd been a while since they'd last eaten. "Amberlee. Amberlee Howard, this is my son Benjamin. Thank you, you really don't have to do this." She wasn't so comfortable as to answer that someone wasn't waiting for them or that they were completely on their own with nowhere to go. The curled haired mother had heard horror stories on her way here of people whisking away newcomers in this town and no one hearing from them again. Just like that, gone. ANd she did not want that to happen to them.

Lycari
"No," Lycari answered her, "I don't have to do this. I want to do this.
"Not too long ago, I was new in town and someone helped me. I'm just passing on the favor."
He checked the menu.
"Does everyone like pizza?" He asked, "I could use a bite myself."
The waitress slouched off to shout the order into the back for the chef. Lycari watched the little boy as the small head nodded sleepily.
"We can take this to go if you like," the shifter suggested, "Looks like your boy's gonna fall asleep in his plate. I live at a hostel just down the road. I can take you there by taxi if you like.
"If you don't like the look of the place, you can tell the driver to take you someplace else. On me. This city isn't a great place to be when you're by yourself."
Lycari hadn't had any trouble. He was a shifter and although he spent a lot of time as a human, he had his animal selves to turn to if he needed to. Food hadn't been a problem in the country and forests. As his human self, Lycari was well muscled and had the confidence of a fighter. Only an idiot would try to take him on. Even when sleeping, his instincts kept him wary and he had once instantly shifted into his wolf self when a homeless guy had tried to take his blanket in one of the parks.
Soon the pizza came and the shifter asked for it to be boxed up.
Lycari stood up and held the pizza box out to Amberlee.
"Are you coming?" He asked quietly. He held his hand out to help her up.
