A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

She let out a sigh, the kind of sigh that only the troubled could muster. She had been putting this off for the last week, but Severine was getting impatient. Of course, her familiar was quite capable of hunting her own dinner, something that Sybil reminded her any time she pouted that it had been too long since she last went to the store, but Sybil was convinced that her raven familiar was completely uninterested in any sort of logic. She had finally been convinced to go into the city, something she resented quite severely, when she realized that she no longer had flour, and various other supplies were running low.
"You've won, you bastard," she called to the raven who perched on the ledge just outside of the cottage. She was sure that if Severine could smile, she would. "You know this means that you need to be ready too," she continued. Of course, Sybil knew that Severine knew this; the time witch did not leave her property without ensuring that her familiar was close behind her. She had always been this way in the half-decade it was since she found the Australian Raven, mostly because Severine knew that if anyone was to hurt her, she needed to seek help, or at least, Sybil was convinced that she did. "Remember, keep a low profile. Act like a normal bird. Are we understood?"
The creature crowed back to her, and Sybil took that as a sign. She reached out and patted the bird's head, before going over her own checklist. Wallet, keys, black obsidian, amethyst, a pocket sized incantation book whose leather cover made it indistinguishable from any other book. Was there anything else she needed?
time skip
The woman looked paranoid as she entered the coffee shop. Normally, she wouldn't have ventured into any place that was not directly necessary, but she had promised Severine that she would get her at least something from the bakery shelf. Still, being inside made her anxious, and it seemed as if she looked over her shoulder every few seconds. She let out another sigh, before ordering a coffee. She was waiting nose deep in her incantation book for her purchase, a triple shot of espresso and a scone, when someone approached her from behind...

Dakhan
The coffee shop was crowded. The line seemed to be moving well, so Dakhan lined up behind a woman with a book. Although her back was to him, he could sense that there was something unusual about her. The fact that a good sized raven sat on her shoulder was a very big clue.
From somewhere farther back in the line a woman suddenly called out, "Hey! What's that bird doing in here? This place serves food! Animals aren't sanitary!"
Dakhan looked down the line behind himself. Yes, there she was, a large woman in a flowered dress with just about the biggest frown he'd ever seen on her florid face. She was probably trying to get the woman in front of him tossed out on her ear, so the line would move faster.
"Madam," he called to the upset woman, "The lady in front of me is not breaking any law that I can see. I believe that the bird is a service animal which, unless there is a sign, is allowed in any store."
The woman glared at him and the vampire gave her his sweetest smile, which made him look even more boyish and attractive than ever. Still muttering about slow lines and unsanitary birds, the large woman settled down.
Dakhan ran over what he was supposed to buy in his mind; two very large expressos and a cranberry muffin for Hunter, two cranberry muffins and a raisin bran muffin for the cu and a medium latte for himself, with a buttered scone.

She physically recoiled when the woman yelled, and she found herself retreating into the leather jacket that she was probably dying of heat in. Severine only hovered so closely when she was on edge, which made her on edge. Yet, when she opened up her mouth to speak, she found that no words came out. Perhaps it was her desire to make herself small, or perhaps she just didn't know what to say. After all, how do you explain such things to a mortal?
Luckily for her, it seemed that she was saved by the man behind her. She found her cheeks heating in embarassment. Of course, she had needed someone to rescue her. It had been only a few minutes since she'd entered the city, and already, her head hurt. Sybil let out a soft sigh as he finished, glancing at the bird. "You'd better appreciate this," she murmured so lowly that only the creature would have been able to hear, before fully turning towards the man.
Anxiety crawled behind her gaze. She liked to keep her head low, avoid problems, go home, yet here she was, awkwardly talking to a stranger who had just saved her from a very uncomfortable conversation. "Th-thanks," she stammered. "It's not usually a problem. Can I buy you something to repay you?" she asked, her arm clutching her other nervously, not at all sure how to properly interact with just about anyone.

The woman in front of him almost seemed to want to disappear into the floor. Dakhan had never seen anyone so introverted. He didn't know whether to respect her wish to be left alone, or to try and unwind her a bit.
The vampire smiled kindly and said, "It's alright. Maybe I could buy your order for you?"
The raven was a magnificent bird, with an impressive beak and those knowing beady black eyes. It was also more than it appeared to be, he was sure.
"That's one gorgeous SERVICE ANIMAL you've got there," he spoke loudly enough that the annoyed lady at the back of the line could hear.
"I never knew that ravens could be trained for service work."
In a whisper, he added, "I can see that you're uncomfortable. I'll stick around until you feel better. You can tell me about your bird."

She shifted slightly, offering a faint laugh. "If... you're sure, that would be lovely. I don't get out much, and it's my first time here. Do you have any recommendations?" She sounded awkward at best, but it was clear she was putting in some real effort to sound normal and not at all like she'd spent most of her adult life in almost complete isolation, save a few irregular shopping trips and the occassional visitor.
She watched his gaze follow to her bird, and her lips curled into the very start of a genuine smile. She could tell he appreciated the creature he saw, and she couldn't help but feel proud of her familiar. "She's a magnificent bird, that's for sure," she murmured. "They're incredibly smart creatures, and it's kind of a funny story on how we started working together. Now, I couldn't imagine my life without her." She offered the creature a stroke between its eyes as if it was a cat and not a scavenger.
She then dropped her voice slightly, her head tilted ever so slightly. "I appreciate the offer, but don't feel as if you have to. Sev and I can handle ourselves once we're out of here. We don't normally run into trouble like this..." She coughed slightly to clear her voice. "I'm Sybil, by the way," she said a little louder, reaching her hand out to his.

Dakhan
Dakhan took her hand in his slightly cooler one and gave her a soft smile.
"I'm Dakhan," he said, "And I know a little bit about being alone. In fact, this is my first time out and about in, well, a great many years.
"And it's no trouble at all.
"This place is highly recommended and what you want depends on what your taste is. It's not only got coffee, you can get tea, scones, muffins, no actual meals though. The coffee comes in tons of flavors and types.
"I kind of like the kopi luwak, but Hunter wants an espresso. I'm getting fruit juice for her dog and raisin bran muffins all 'round."
He leaned closer and whispered, "There's a nice cranberry lemon muffin that your bird will love!"
The line inched forward and the two of them would be next up to order. The man ahead ordered a couple of lattes and some carrot muffins.
"You know," Dakhan mentioned, "Sometimes forcing yourself to do something you're not used to doing is the best way to live your life to the fullest, no matter how long it is.
"And my invitation in no way reflects on how well you can handle yourself in an unfamiliar situation."
He cocked his head at her and added, "I find you interesting and I'd love to hear how you two met up."
The man ahead moved off with his order and they were next.
