A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

Rhiannon gritted her teeth at the woman's tone. A high priestess? She hadn't met one in years, not after that little run-in back in the 70s, but the haughty way she spoke, as if she had something over them, was irritating, to say the least. If anything, Rhiannon could never stand those cultish creatures; they always thought they had something better, as if being bound by rules and given a safety net meant anything in this world these days.
A snort left her mouth at Autumn's words. "That's a lie if I've ever heard one," Rhiannon spoke coldly, the ice in her voice not changing at all, "my brother's gay, and trust me, even if he wasn't, I doubt he'd be into someone like–"
Wait. But then again, even Rhiannon had pieced together that she had something to do with whatever Hywel wouldn't speak about. Whatever this was, she was connected to what had happened those months ago, when he had called her looking as if he had been left for dead out in the middle of Queens, and he had forgotten it all, only to...and the way he had left, looking as if he was about to vomit.
Even she could put two and two together.
"Shit," she breathed, her blue eyes widening in realization, "you wiped his memories didn't you?" That was why she couldn't find anything wrong with him, no sense of strain or stress other than his own discomfort with being unable to remember, as if it was all just some drunken blackout...it made sense, and she hadn't even tried to check for another's tampering.
"You–" she was seething in rage now, the air crackling with energy, "you took advantage of him, didn't you? Lured him into your home like some sort of predator–" Jesus Christ. She couldn't even find the words, but her magic certainly spoke for her, as tendrils of energy lashed out against the other witch.

"We should discuss this outside," Autumn hissed against the pain, stalking out the lobby doors. When they were down a side street, she turned back to Rhiannon. "Your brother is hardly innocent- he tried to kill me! Had he not, his memories would be completely gone, and this wouldn't be an issue."
The High Priestess was standing defensively, ready to protect herself if Rhiannon did attack. "I never meant any harm to Hywel. I helped heal him, too. I suppose he doesn't remember that? It's due to me that he can use low level magic again!" Autumn did not take kindly to being insulted, even if every word Rhiannon said was correct.
"Now, please. We need to talk about this like adults. Or you risk harming your niece and nephew." Autumn kept bringing up the children, hoping the knowledge of them might save her still. "I can erase his memories completely- I can disappear. Neither of you need see me again. But I will not endanger my children, nor will I allow you to."

Rhiannon could barely contain her rage, her hands white-knuckled as she stormed after the other woman. It was true that they didn't need to draw a crowd but dammit, she didn't care right now. She spotted her brother outside, crouched and leaning against the glass. Fuck, she needed to attend to him first.
"Hey, go home first," she murmured in the most gentle voice she could muster, "I'll handle it from here, okay?" The other man barely seemed to hear her as she glanced around, whispering one spell to make sure the bystanders would pay them no attention and another to teleport him back home.
She couldn't lose the woman. Her eyes were sharp, catching her bright hair as she chased after the High Priestess. A scoff left her mouth. Damn, was this witch really daft enough to think that she could help him? "You have no idea what you've done," she snarled, "did he actually tell you what his affliction is? Because I doubt he's stupid enough to, and any witch without the stupidity of overconfidence would see a diagnostic spell and realize it's way out of their depth."
Her gaze was unflinching. "You're really going to stand here and tell me that someone being raped wouldn't lash out and try to throw off their attacker in any way?" she snapped, before eyeing her pregnant belly, "if it's really his child, and god forbid they inherit whatever he has, you'll be dead soon enough, and I won't even have to kill you myself."

"Fine, then we have nothing further to discuss here," Autumn said sharply. "If you're going to circle around this point indefinitely. Some causes are farther reaching than one man's feelings, or one woman's decency. Maybe you'll be lucky and the children will kill me." She didn't believe this would happen, but saying it might get this frustrating encounter over with. Autumn did not like explaining herself- the simple minded could never understand.
"I knew that the affliction was out of my depth, which is why I did the most I could with what I had. Whatever you may think of me, let's be through with this. Go comfort your brother. I'll disappear- but if you want to find me, you know where I'll be." The botanical gardens- or her cabin, if Hywel remembered the way. "I won't torment him any more."

She sneered. "Maybe I will," she spoke, an ominous tone in her voice, "trust me, it'd be smarter for you to get rid of any evidence of him in you. I don't know why you wanted his children after doing that to him, but you're out of your depth here. If you had any semblence of common sense, after seeing what he did to you, you'd get rid of it as soon as you can."
Rhiannon would never understand why Autumn had done what she did, but she was right. Hywel needed her right now. Jesus Christ, what kind of mess had they gotten themselves into? They had a deal, to not get involved in the organizations and business of the other supernaturals around the city, and part of her was furious at her brother for disobeying their first rule, and another part wanted to kill this woman before her spawn did...and well, a part of her wanted to go to him, to see if she could understand what had gone on now that she knew a witch's power was involved.
She turned, jacket and scarf whipping in the wind, and moments later she had vanished into thin air.

Autumn watched her go, with a faint smile that not exactly amused. It was a little late for an abortion now, and besides, these children had been the end goal.
As she neared the end of her pregnancy, she weakened much more quickly than she expected. By the ninth month, she felt she was out of options. She was unable to perform her duties as High Priestess, and if she didn't get a hold on the situation, she wasn't sure she'd be able to make it through labor and delivery.
So, incredibly reluctantly, she tracked down Rhiannon. The witch was more powerful than most that she knew, and she was aware of Hywel's situation, so it seemed to be the best bet. It took more time and effort than she had for her to corner the witch again. The half-fae was not looking well- she was overly pale and her hands and wrists were too skinny. "I need your help," she said, as if she hadn't promised to disappear. "And I know you despise me, and that you don't want to help me. But maybe... maybe we can work out a deal. Surely I have something you would trade for. Your brother never has to know."

Perhaps Rhiannon had gotten too comfortable with her schedules; there weren't any big changes from her day to day when she wasn't researching anything specific. She had her daily coffee run, grocery shopping, and visits to the office she had...still, she hadn't expected the other witch to show her face anytime soon.
The moment she saw the witch, she was ready to attack, but the way she looked made her stop for a moment. Of course, Rhiannon had her suspicions–she knew her brother's power better than anyone–but this was certainly worse than she expected. Of course, she hadn't listened; the witch was arrogant enough to think she could survive this. Rhiannon could laugh.
"Oh?" her voice was still icy, "and what did you have to offer? Seems like you must be desperate enough to come begging on your knees for me to help."
There wasn't anything she wanted from this witch, certainly not after what she did to Hywel, but her own curiosity wanted to know what exactly was destroying the woman. Her own morbid curiosity wanted to experiment on the woman herself.

"I came to you because you know the situation better than anyone," she said, equally icy despite being the one to initiate the entire conversation. "I don't know you at all, so I don't know what you want. But if you name something I can provide, you can have it. Otherwise I don't know that I have much time left."
Autumn was not ready to die, nor was she ready to sacrifice her children. If she wasn't there to raise them, her plan wouldn't work. If they died, she'd have to start again. So groveling- if this could be called groveling- in front of Rhiannon was her only option.

It wasn't just enough to have the opportunity to experiment on the other witch and to watch her grovel for her life really; Rhiannon had always been a sadist compared to her brother who, in her opinion, was very much the opposite, and for what this bitch had done? She really wanted her to hurt.
"Hm," she mused, a hand to her lips as if simply thinking over the offer Autumn provided, as if she had not yet made up her mind.
"I want a child from you," she smirked, looking at Autumn with an absolutely feral look in her eyes, "maybe if you're lucky, one of them will survive. I frankly can't care less." It had little to do with her raising one and much more about getting revenge. Not to mention that if they survived, she wanted to see Autumn's face as she took one away. They'd be good to learn from if somehow, they inherited his power. If her brother didn't want the child she'd find a way to experiment with it in order to learn about his condition, and if all fails, she'd make sure the kid found a home where they could never be found by this witch in front of her.
"Deal or not?" the smirk on her face said it all.

Autumn pursed her lips tightly, the idea immediately raising her hackles. "Give me... a moment, to think about it," she said stiffly, stalking a short distance away and balancing herself against a wall with her palm.
It was easy math. If she didn't accept, she would have zero children, and she would probably die. If she did, she might live, and she would have at least one child if she did. She had to accept, since there was no other option. Still, it took a long time for her to compose herself and return to that uppity bitch.
"Fine. Deal," she said curtly. "You can have one child." It would pain her deeply to hand over one of the things she had worked so hard for... but at least the baby would be raised by witches- she didn't know of Rhiannon's plans for the child, but she assumed everyone wanted a kid, right? "Now help me."

Rhiannon's poker face remained still until she spoke, and then the faintest smirk appeared on her lips. Of course, she'd accept. Immediately, the woman murmured a few words in a different language, waving a hand over Autumn, her eyes glowing for a faint moment, before fading back to the even grey of her steely gaze.
"Twins huh," she mused, "no wonder why you're like this; I would've thought you'd last maybe a month or two longer. Not surprised you didn't listen."
She frowned. "You need a strength potion first before I can do anything, but it's unfortunate that your spawn has to be crossed with his. I don't know if they've inherited his curse but..." Rhiannon was already working, her hands busy with the vials of color and ingredients. She hesitated, eyes meeting Autumn's once more.
"What are you, actually?" she frowned, "even if my brother isn't your average run-of-the-mill witch, the children shouldn't be able to cause you this much harm. You're a powerful witch, I get that, but your children are taking more nutrients from you than you can provide; that's never a good sign, even for people like us."

"I'm only half-witch," Autumn admitted, trying not to slap Rhiannon for that damned smirk. "My mother was a fae- a succubus, to be precise." It pained her to be so open with this woman, but she needed the whole truth if she were to be able to concoct something to keep Autumn alive until the children were born.
For the most part, she wasn't a strong witch because of her inner powers, but because people had so willingly shared their secrets when her powers moved on them, and she so eagerly memorized them and wrote them down. The strongest power she had was her succubus ability, and that was no match against twins that drained her of all her strength. "Has he... has he always been like this? Your brother?" Autumn knew he was far older than her, but she did not know if this was inflicted or a born curse.

Rhiannon looked up at her admission, her brow furrowing at that. She had heard of half-fae, but she had always assumed it was just a rumour. Clearly not, she thought dryly, and it shouldn't have been this much of a surprise either. The other witch was powerful, even she could tell. Still, that only meant trouble.
After almost two centuries, she still hadn't learned as much about Hywel's gift as she hoped; plenty of experiments in trying to manage the situation either ended up being less effective than hoped or completely failing anyway; what else was there to do? She had never anticipated this problem, mostly because she knew he'd likely never have kids. Guess she was wrong about that too.
She looked up again at the next question, before sighing and continuing her work. "No," she spoke reluctantly, "he had the gift and he was talented at magic when he was younger, particularly with cursing or transferring elements into objects." Rhiannon was surprised he didn't mention it, but then again, even if he did, he never knew the full story of it. "Let's just say something went wrong and we all received some...unexpected results."
Rhiannon poured the extra ingredients into the strengthening potion she had, before pulling out a tiny vial from her pocket, moving towards Autumn. "Here, take this first," she spoke, passing the blue liquid towards the witch.
