A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

nostalgicHywel had to admit that, for a coven, the botanical gardens seemed extremely fitting. It wasn't like he had ever joined it–they really had a wishy-washy way of dealing with what they called 'dark magic' users, and apparently blood magic was on that list of banned practices–but he could still appreciate their style. The brightly coloured trees and the wooden gates resembling Japanese gardens, plus the newer modern architecture...it was wonderful really. He could remember when it was built, back when the World Fair still happened and all...wow, he really was getting old, wasn't he? Reminiscing over times like that, he chuckled to himself. Despite what his sister claimed, he did have other hobbies other than getting fucked up at a club, thank you very much. Today just felt like one of those days–the sun was high and the clouds were fluffy, as if painted onto the set of a movie. It really was a perfect day, and well, if anything connected him back to his past, it was Queens and the beautiful trees of old, reminding him of a time when this space was but forests and trees and small houses rather than the magnificent skyscrapers that pierced the clouds these days. It was a simpler time, and sitting on a bench with his eyes closed, he could almost laugh at how old and sentimental he must sound in his head. It was rare to find him in this sort of headspace ever, but today, he indulged in it.

Autumn Hewitt didn't often come out to the gardens, preferring instead to let the coven flock to her in her cabin outside the city. But as the new High Priestess she was cognizant of her duties, which included spending time at the Coven's main location. Secretly she enjoyed the attention she received when she entered the human world, even if she despised the creatures themselves.
She was a vision in a white cotton dress, wandering among the flowers. Autumn had gotten her beauty from her mother, and the succubus blood ran deep. She was average in height, with generous curves and voluminous black curls that framed her flawless features. With the upturn of her black eyebrows and the gentle pout of her lips, the half-fae drew others in effortlessly- she always had. She was well aware of this and was quick to use it to her advantage. She didn't recognize the man sitting on a stone bench, but she could sense that he was not entirely human. Something about his energy suggested the weight of decades, though he looked not much older than herself.
"Good afternoon," she greeted the newcomer softly, her voice high and lilting, her cyan gaze taking him in with curiosity. When he opened his eyes to look at her, her lips parted in a gentle smile, the invisible tendrils of her overwhelming charm reaching out to draw him in. "I don't believe we've met before. My name is Autumn."

He had expected to spend the day alone, but perhaps the gods had different plans for him today. He had barely breathed in the early smell of spring when a voice spoke to him. Something about the voice made his troubles seem to float off for a moment. Strange. He opened one eye to the voice that spoke, only to see the woman clad in white, as if an angel had floated down from the heavens to–
Wait, what was he thinking? His brow furrowed at that thought. He almost sounded like he was in love with her, and he knew that wasn't true; he didn't swing her way, after all. That was weird. There was something going on; Hywel didn't live for this long just to be ignorant of how absolutely crazy this world was. He knew it himself with his strange touch, after all. He was just as supernatural as the rest of them.
"Are you a regular around here?" Hywel asked, pulling himself out of his dazed stupor to sit up properly, turning towards her fully, his voice friendly enough, though the earlier expression probably gave his suspicion away already; there was something about the other woman he didn't quite trust. After all, that feeling that had come over him earlier...that wasn't natural, right?
"I'm Hywel, nice to meet you."

"Not exactly a regular," she said with a growing smile, moving on light feet to stand closer to this man. "But I've been here more often recently. She liked the botanical gardens better than any other part of this sprawling city, but they still couldn't quite compare to her home. Besides, many members of the coven made the voyage out to stay with her for a bit. It was a healing experience for a witch to spend time in the presence of the High Priestess, and Autumn was a gracious host.
"You're not a part of the coven." It might have been a question, but Autumn said it as a statement of fact. She knew that this man was a supernatural being, and her guess was a warlock, but she was good at explaining away mistakes if she had revealed too much with this last statement. Her curiosity was too strong, and she couldn't avoid probing into this man's life. There had long been an idea forming in her head, swirling in the shadows, that she was now in a good position to begin enacting.

Of all the things Hywel had expected to come out of her mouth–maybe a 'how are you' or a 'are you here for the spring festival'–an admission of the coven's existence was definitely not what he expected. The coven? Where did she get that from? His expression was of shock and faint suspicion, his brow furrowed in a confused expression. He could answer truthfully, but...how did she know? Was she a threat? If he answered truthfully, she'd either attack or answer his question. If he feigned ignorance...well, if she could tell, she'd know, no?
He hesitated, weighing his options. She was just one woman, if worst comes to worst, he could handle it. His gaze glanced to the surroundings; no one else seemed to be undercover or anything. His hand fiddled with the silver ring he always wore, a nervous habit.
"I'm guessing you are?" he frowned, forcing his shoulders to lie flat, raising a brow at the woman. It wasn't like he could join the coven. Hundred years ago, they didn't want to take a couple of poverty-stricken orphans, and years later it was something stupid about how blood magic was off limits, and now...well, he wasn't really a warlock anymore, was he? He was just some weird mongrel creature.
"So how did you know?" he asked, the lie coming smoothly out of his mouth, "I didn't think people could pick up on that kind of thing just by looking at me."

"I am," Autumn laughed good-naturedly, slowly sinking onto the bench beside him. "It has its flaws, but I find the community it gives me refreshing. I've always preferred to be around my own kind." She wondered if she should tell him that she was the High Priestess, but decided against it. If it was important, she could broach the topic later.
How did she know? She wasn't even quite sure herself. It was never as obvious as a flashing sign but she had always had a sense, one that was subtle and that she hadn't understood for years, but one that hadn't been wrong yet. There was a pull towards the supernatural, one that she didn't feel towards humans. "I guess I'm just not like other people. It's not hard for me to tell who is closer to the higher realms of existence. I can't pin you as a warlock, that was just my own guesswork."

Huh. He blinked at her for a few moments, before a smile crept on his face that quickly devolved into a laugh. Interesting. He had never met anyone–not even a witch–who could take a look at him and know immediately that he wasn't human. So she didn't know exactly what he was–that was a relief–but she had a sense for the supernatural.
He was intrigued, of course. If she was a witch, she certainly had a gift unlike most. He could understand her sentiment of course; other witches were often better company than humans. It had been true for the better half of the last century; he had seen enough witch hunts to last him a lifetime.
"Mm, not to be super cliche, but I'm more of a work alone kind of guy," he leaned back, "let's just say a lot of your coven hasn't been fond of me–my family the last couple of decades." He wasn't going to let out his secret yet. "Apparently we cause too much trouble for the coven when we use magic in our daily lives."
Still, he turned to her, blue eyes bright and quizzical, his legs crossed underneath him on the bench they were sitting on. "–but you...you've inherited something that lets you...see people differently? That's new; better keep yourself out of the hands of those hunter types out there, ya know? They'd use that gift to hunt the rest of our people down."

"That's a shame," she said of the news that her coven didn't particularly like Hywel. Her lips pursed at the reason, and she shook her head. "I must say I disagree with the coven there- it may not be a popular view, but I'm all for disrupting the human world. Why should we limit ourselves to maintain the status quo of a weaker species?"
Her views were far more radical than that- she didn't want to co-exist openly with humans, she truly viewed them as lesser beings and was eager for the day when supernaturals were the accepted rulers of this world. Hiding her abilities was bothersome, and for what? These spiritually dead, ungifted, spineless creatures? It was aggravating.
"It is a useful ability, for sure. It's a very subtle pull, but I've learned what it means and I am usually as brazen as I was with you. People like us shouldn't hide from each other." She smiled again, her white teeth flashing behind her full lips. Her words were unusual for a witch, particularly for a High Priestess, but her enthusiastic speech and her magical charm made it hard to disagree with her, at least in the moment.

Oh? He wasn't exactly sure how to react to her comment. Weaker species, huh? He wasn't sure how to react to that, other than the dry voice in the back of his head that pointed out how well this woman would get along with Rhiannon, really. Hywel had no qualms against the humans himself, and he knew he wasn't one to judge; how could he, when he was stealing time off their lives for a good high? It had been decades since he felt the bits of remorse he used to; every feeling he had was buried deep within for the better half of the century.
He smirked. Still, the other woman was admirable. "You remind me a lot of my sister, you know," he chuckled, "she'd probably say the same thing as you. He respected that. Respected a witch who was upfront about what she was. They hadn't been able to do that most of history.
He turned to the gardens once more. "I know what you mean," he spoke, and for a moment, the faint lilt of his Irish tones seeped into his voice, an accent he had learned to hide, "it's funny how we're capable of everything and we're still stuck hiding away from humans with guns. It's kind of ridiculous, isn't it? These people don't know what's actually around them and they live such oblivious lives; it's kind of amusing, to be honest."

"Then I hope I get the chance to meet your sister. She sounds like my kind of friend," Autumn smiled. It was a relief to know that others felt the same way she did. It was hard to deny that humans were weaker- sure, some of them could be changed to the supernatural, but others would rather die or kill non-humans rather than accept their superiority.
Autumn was realistic- she knew she alone did not have the power to rise up against humanity and cleanse them from the earth. Some of them relied on humans, so they didn't all need to be wiped out. But she dreamed of a day when she and her people weren't forced to the shadows because they couldn't unite against the powerless 'threat' that they all feared. "Funny and somewhat pathetic. They live lives of inconsequence, happy to worry about rent and potlucks and keep themselves closed off to the real world. What drew you out here today?" If the Coven didn't like Hywel, she was curious as to why he had wandered back out here.

He laughed at that. That'd be a mistake, he thought. First mistake was always trusting Rhiannon, he had seen it time and time again. She could care about people, but she rarely did, and her fake smiles and friendly conversations came at such an ease that many would never be able to tell it was all a facade. Then again, if anyone could befriend her, it was this girl. They both had something about them that made him wonder what was lying underneath the surface.
He chuckled at her words again. It was true; humans lived such short lives. They were just so...delicate, and at this point, Hywel no longer had much value for their easy existence. He didn't outright hate them like Autumn did, it was just indifference. Ants underneath a boot. Still, it was amusing to hear someone so passionate about their petty lives; he wondered what made her so infuriated by them, a topic he'd approach eventually.
"Mm me?" he spoke, sounding almost a little distracted, "you know, had a day off and this place reminds me of home I guess. I sound like an old man when I talk like this but...things were simpler once, you know? New York's always so big, it gets a bit claustrophobic down in Manhattan, so I come out here to get a breather."
He turned to her. "You? Not on some sort of Coven business, I hope?"

"No Coven business today, thankfully. I don't actually live around here- I'm out of the city in a little cabin, but I like coming to the gardens sometimes." She let her gaze wander over the beauty of the flora. Nature drew her in, and she loved the thick foliage that surrounded her cottage.
"You do sound like an old man, but I think it's sweet," Autumn let her smile spread, and her magnetism moved out again, testing Hywel. She didn't know he was gay, but if she had it wouldn't have mattered much. More often than not her powers overtook natural desires. The downside was that it only worked in close proximity- when her conquests got some distance between them, they often realized that something larger was at play.

Ah, at least this wasn't a recruitment mission. "That sounds nice," he offered, "honestly sometimes the outskirts feel more natural than here, but I guess I've been living in the city for too long. Kinda got used to living in skyscrapers, you know?" He did miss the gardens and forests, a lot really, but he was always going to be a city boy.
When she leaned towards him, he naturally shifted, feeling the weird feeling come over him again, as if he had just swallowed a handful of poppers or something and was feeling that natural desire to–oh no. He pulled away, feeling his skin prickle a little, for the first time in a long while, feeling almost a little uncomfortable.
"Um...look, you're really cool and all, and I don't know what your–" he lifted his hands, quoting in the air, "special gifts are but...I don't swing your way." He gave her an apologetic smile, the tightness seen in the way his eyes crinkled, "you're nice, and pretty, but I'm into guys, sorry." He didn't know if he was being a little too forward; maybe she just didn't realize she was doing her little...thing, but it was better to clear it up front, right?

Autumn raised her eyebrows, looking just slightly wounded. "Oh! That doesn't matter to me- I'm really not doing anything to you on purpose. I'm so sorry if I made you uncomfortable," she lied smoothly, the faux innocence coloring her tone beautifully. Not that she really did care- he could do whatever he wanted, like whoever he wanted. If things did go her way, it wouldn't matter. Just one night wouldn't harm him, and he would think he wanted it in the moment.
Their bodies were just vessels, and his would have a job to do soon. But she had barely exerted her power now. She needed to bide her time, to wait until his guard was down before she fully drew him in. Still, she had to placate his worries now. "It's a power beyond my control, but it's not terribly strong. It dwindles the more time we spend together, I promise." As if to prove her point, she pulled the feeling back slightly, to make it feel like it was ebbing. A friendly smile spread on her features. "But I'm glad you told me about your preferences. No need to get my hopes up about anything. Besides, we relate there- I swing all ways."
She did, truthfully, but her focus was on boys at the moment. They offered something crucial to her plans, something that women did not.

His expression still seemed slightly uncomfortable, but he felt himself visibly relax when her power pulled away. Whatever her power was, it was...weird. It felt like the same substances he had taken throughout the years to lessen the void–opiates, poppers, he had tried plenty of them–but it was different. This void had a voice that seeed to invite him in, numbing his senses. It wasn't just that he didn't have control, it was that he almost wanted to lose control.
He didn't dwell much onto it. After all, he couldn't control his own 'gifts' either. That he could relate. "Yeah, no worries," he chuckled awkwardly, running a hand through his hair, "guess there's still a lot about witchcraft that I still don't know. Learning new things every day, ya know?"
He smiled at that. It wasn't unusual to find another member of the LGBTQ community in this city; New York was probably the most openly gay-friendly place to be in–it was why he chose to stay here rather than go to the middle of fuck-knows after all. "Glad to know," he smiled, a friendly expression, as if relaxing at that admission, "I mean, New York really does have the best gay scene in this country but you never know what kind of people you meet around here, ya know? Even though everyone here's a liberal and a half, you still run into the occasional asshole."
He seemed at ease once more as her power ebbed. He liked this girl, even if she was kind of weird. A friendly face he could relate to was hard to find in this city.
