A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

"Reader Rabbit was for the cool kids," laughed Bea, rolling her eyes. "Nooo, I got the off-brand stuff with an animatronic bear that looked like he would rip your soul out of your chest if you blinked. Scarred me for life, honestly." She was gearing up to launch into another story of woe from her childhood when Eme suggested they go together, and felt her face grow warm. "Sure thing! Now that I've got your number, prepare to get pestered with the flower of the day. All of the cool kids get sent a flower of the day from yours truly. You'll be sick of it in a week, tops."
Bea laughed again, surprised to find how easy it was to talk to Eme despite only just having met. "Oh yeah, definitely! It's pretty much me working every day, so come by any time and you're likely to find me. I did just hire a new kid that is honestly so pure that I've sworn to protect from Karens, but if he's working I'm just upstairs taking a nap probably." She took another sip of her drink, hoping to swish the butterflies taking flight in her stomach and instead only feeding them.
"You'll have to take me to some of the hole-in-the-wall places sometime. Even though I pretty much grew up here, I really only know the big-name stuff and I know NYC has more to offer than that. I'm honestly so tired by the time dinner rolls around that I don't do the food I eat justice. I pretty much just slurp down the cup noodle flavor of the day and hit the hay, so let's just say my tastebuds could use a wake-up call."

Emeline laughed. "Okay, but can I be honest? My mom thought Reader Rabbit was a book that was supposed to help us get ahead, like...one of those learning books? With pictures? I was in third grade and she got me the fifth grade one so I could jump ahead and learn stuff, and it turns out to be a video game so like...guess I'm glad she thought scholastic was only for books. It was the only game I got to play back then."
She felt a smile creep onto her face at the 'flower of the day' idea. How romantic, a small voice teased her, and she quickly shushed it. "If you're prepared for a random tattoo fact every day, I'll consider that a challenge," she smirked, "and you better send those 'flower of the day' things, or I'm going to be really disappointed. Like, really, really disappointed."
It was just so easy to talk to Bea; she had that natural charm and the way she smiled just seemed so inviting. It was rare for Emeline to just connect with someone. Most first meetings–and client to customer relationships especially–were awkward, a set of polite pleasantries and 'where are you froms' and 'what do you dos' were in order, but for some reason, they just clicked. It was story after story, jokes and teasing melding together. It was...easy. Emeline wasn't really the kind of person who found socializing easy.
"Well I've lived here for a while," she hummed, "got a few places to recommend. There's a bar downtown that does really cool science-y drinks, or I mean, ever gone to Red Rooster? Best chicken in town, I swear. Oh, and I know a place that does really great ice-cream; they even have vegan flavours." She loved going out to eat, so this was right up her alley.

"I'll be disappointed if I don't get one," teased Bea with a grin, already anticipating the equivalent of a 'good morning' text from Eme. This was...weird. She vibed so well with Eme, but they weren't anything more than friends, right? They couldn't be anything more than that, not really. Doubt began to creep into her mind as the years and years of her parents quietly but firmly quashing her crushes on girls at school rose up. Shaking her head, the smile slid from her face but she managed to keep a neutrally warm expression.
"Ooh, I'm not much of a drinker, though appearances might attest to the contrary, but that bar sounds cool! I'm always down for new experiences, at least." She tucked her hair behind her ear, a nervous habit that was easy enough to notice after awhile. "I'm vegetarian, but I bet that ice-cream place would be great! When ice-cream can find a way to do vegan well, you can be sure the rest of their ice-cream is good too!"
She wished it could be easy with Eme, that they could flirt and hang out and date, but there was no way in hell her parents would ever be okay with it, and if they wanted to they could take the whole shop from her. Her mind flickered back to the blow-out fight she'd had with them in high school and the looming threat of her career being taken from her. No, this would be a fun, cute friendship and nothing more. Nothing. More.

Emeline laughed. "Well, first tattoo fact of the day, she smirked, wagging her eyebrows playfully, "back in the day, they didn't have all the colors we have now, but to make certain colors, some artists used to use urine." She gave Bea a laugh. "Imagine that! God I told my flatmate that when I found out and he wouldn't stop joking about it for weeks."
Her eyes turned to Bea's face, and for a moment, it seemed like she was a bit troubled. Was everything okay? Her brow furrowed slightly, wondering whether to ask or not. After all, if Bea wanted to say something, it'd be better to ask, right? But what if it was something personal? Emeline didn't want to be too intrusive; they'd just met after all, and she knew better than anyone what it was like to want to keep things to herself. Everyone had some unsavory issues here and there.
The expression seemed to clear a moment later, and Emeline relaxed a little. It seemed whatever it was, it probably wasn't a big deal. Her expression brightened when Bea showed an interest in the activities. Hm, maybe she could message her tonight or something...find out where her flower shop was and maybe ask her if she wanted to do something together. What exactly, she wasn't sure, but hey, there were always plenty of things to do in the city, and if she was all out of ideas, Ash would probably have one, right?
"We have to go sometime then," she grinned, "and it's fine if you don't drink much, I think cocktail bars aren't meant for heavy drinkers anyway, they're too expensive, but I can always invite others if you want to try different things." She didn't want the other girl to feel awkward, and hey, some people did better with larger groups. Emeline wasn't one of them, but she knew some of her friends liked larger things–parties, clubs, bars, events...she wondered if Bea was like that.
"I mean our first hangout has to be at your flower shop though," she gave the other girl a cheeky grin, "you need to show me all your favorite flowers."

Bea's expression seemed to entirely clear when Emeline joked about the tattoo, though it quickly scrunched up at the thought. "There wasn't anything extra in that ink you tatted me with, was there?" she teased, looking down at her carefully wrapped new ink. "Your poor flatmate is probably traumatized," she chuckled, though that same veil came over her expression.
Was Eme dating the guy she was living with? Having either lived with her parents or by herself, Bea wasn't sure how living situations worked. Was it normal for a girl to live with a guy they weren't dating? What if Eme was straight after all and Bea was just making a fool of herself? "What's his name?" she asked with an air of nonchalance too carefully constructed to be natural. "How long have you two been together?" There, she'd put it that way and Eme could either take it as a question about their relationship or their living arrangement.
Proud of herself but also terribly afraid of what the answer would be, Beatrice began to fiddle with her cup, deciding to finish it in one swallow. That way if she had to run based on Eme's answer, she wouldn't be stuck leaving with a cup in her hand. Still, Eme's suggestion that they hang out at her flower shop was just a little too casual to be anything other than flirting, right? Judging by the rapid rhythm her heart was pounding at, her dumb brain thought it was. "But sure thing, come over any time and I'll show you the whole place! It's pretty small, so don't judge."

She snorted. Ash? Traumatized? Frankly, if anyone was doing the traumatizing, it was the other boy, she thought. He had a habit if literally doing whatever the fuck he wanted and with less than a second thought to anything else; she'd be surprised if anything phased the other kid. "Probably not," she snorted, "that sort of information is just up his alley; he's the kind of person who thinks it's funny." She eyed Bea with a smirk. "–and no...but if I did, I wouldn't have mentioned it. Don't want to get shut down by the health department." She laughed before taking another sip.
Emeline was surprised that the conversation turned to the topic of her flatmate though. "Oh, his name's Ash," she blinked, before realizing where the conversation was turning. Oh, she thought they were together together. A blush appeared on her face. Nope, that was never going to happen. The kid was an immature wreck, and they were good friends, yes, but the thought of even going on a date with him made her cringe. "Yeah no, we're not dating," she tried not to grimace, "we're just friends, nothing weird between us or anything. I don't think he's into me anyway, or even if he swings my way. We met in high school and his parents live upstate so I let him stay with me."
She laughed, looking down at her cup, feeling just a twinge of embarrassment. "So uh, yeah, I'd love a tour," she tried to change the conversation back to earlier to when it had been so easy to talk to the other girl. She didn't know why she felt so weird, that Bea assumed she was dating Ash. Other people had assumed it before too, and they had jokingly played as a couple a few times to get creepy guys to get off her case, but this just felt different. She didn't know why it felt different because of Bea, so like everything else, she buried that feeling to be analysed again later.

"Yeah, a tour!" Bea felt the awkward in the air and winced, wishing she'd just kept her mouth shut. "Of course! You can come by anytime! I live above the shop anyway, so even if I'm not open I can still give you a private tour, though there's not too much to see." She rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly, wishing she worked somewhere more grandiose.
She glanced down at her phone absently, and realized the time. "Shit," she cursed, then winced and added, "shoot, I mean," under her breath. "I gotta go, Eme," she said apologetically, wishing she wasn't leaving with things weird between them. She could tell she'd upset Eme with her questioning about her flatmate, but wasn't entirely sure why. Still, she shouldn't have pried to begin with and felt bad.
"I have a special order tomorrow that I need to finish up today and then I promised to have dinner with my parents. But you have my number and I have yours, so if I have any questions about my tattoo I can just text you, right?" She didn't want to presume Eme would want to talk to her outside of a professional instance, but she secretly hoped she would.

Eme couldn't help but feel like she had done something to change the air of the conversation. It had been so easy to talk to Bea at first and all of a sudden, it had seemed just a tad bit awkward. Was she too forward? Did she say something wrong? Maybe she'd just end up apologizing later? She didn't know what for.
Luckily, it seemed like Bea didn't look upset or anything. Swing by the shop? Eme bit her lip slightly; was that an invite? She really was curious about the flower shop and well, it wouldn't hurt to get a few plants for her apartment. She always wanted to be one of those girls who had hanging macrame planters and big plants by the windows and live in a high-ceiling apartment. Her apartment wasn't exactly like that but hey, she could make the first step towards it, couldn't she?
"Yeah, that sounds good," she replied with a smile, hiding the giddiness inside her. It wasn't common for Eme to give her number to anyone outside of business, but Bea seemed like an exception, one Emeline would gladly make. "Just call me or text me if you need anything, okay?" she gave her a wave.
Maybe later, she'd text to make sure Bea got to wherever she was going on time. That sounded like a good opener, at least.
