A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

"What kind of pizza did you order?" Emeline's voice called out from the bathroom, as Ash lounged on the couch, his legs hanging off from the side as he sent a text to a friend, almost dropping the phone on his face.
"Uh, meat lovers for me, and the stupid artichoke and olive one for you," he called out, "why aren't you eating your favourite again? I thought you liked the chilli one."
"It's monday," the other girl replied as if it was fact.
Ash only rolled his eyes. "Seems stupid to not eat meat on Monday but go off I guess," he complained, "ugh I wanted to swap slices, but I guess I'll just shove my face with cheese and shit it all out later instead."
A cackle of laughter came from the bathroom as Emeline stepped into the room, putting lipstick on. "Are the others joining us for dinner or are they meeting us at the park later?" she asked.
"Park I think," Ash frowned, finally sitting up, "is your girlfriend coming?"
"She's not my girlfriend," Emeline spoke quickly, the blush appearing on her face, "I think Bea might be busy tonight though. Said something about a delivery coming tomorrow morning at the flower shop."
Ash gave her a wiggle of his brows. "Maybe you should go and help her out," he teased, before looking at his phone again. Ten minutes. He could hear his stomach grumble. God he hoped the pizza would come faster than that. Emeline sat on the other part of the couch cross-legged, grabbing the remote and flipping through the channels on Netflix. "Is there anything to watch these days?" she grumbled, flipping through the recommended list, "I swear I've already watched every documentary series on this."
"Boring," Ash replied in a sing-song voice, "for a punk rock tattoo artist, you really are a grandma at home."
A pillow flew into the curly-haired boy's face, and he laughed, lying down once more as his stomach rumbled again. "Can the pizza gods hurry up?" he pouted, "I'm hungry!"

One more delivery. One more delivery, then Amaya could hand things over to the other driver and head home to ignore her parents and binge random shows on Netflix until she passed out. One more delivery was all she had to get through...until her car promptly died on her, turning her plans for a casual evening into her equivalent of a nightmare.
She sighed loudly and cursed, smacking the back of her head into her seat. “And that’s what I get for continuing to drive my car when it started to smell like burnt rubber,” she mumbled to herself exasperatedly, reaching over to the passenger seat for the insulated bag containing her last two pizzas of the day. Thankfully she was parked somewhere she could legally leave her car—unlike last time when she ended up needing to get it towed—and she’d actually managed to make it to her last stop before the engine sputtered into uneasy silence.
Small mercies, she supposed as she grabbed her few valuables and tucked them away safely, turning to face the building.
It didn’t take her long to find the right door, where she took a quick moment to collect herself. She removed her hat, resting it temporarily on the pizza boxes as she combed a finger through her hair and straightened her jacket. With one final, calming breath, she plastered on her “people smile” and knocked.

The rapid knocks on the door immediately made Ash jump off the couch. "Finally!" he exclaimed brightly, as he quickly answered the door with a grin. Opening the door, he smiled brightly at the other girl who held the life-giving food he had been waiting for. "Oh you're a goddess!" he laughed as he took the pizzas from her, before searching his pocket. Money...money...money...
He counted the twenty and a couple of coins, but that wasn't enough to cover the tip. "Sorry," he looked apologetic, "give me a second let me just–"
He turned to the apartment, still holding the door open with a foot. "Hey Em! Do you have five dollars? I don't have enough for tip!"
The other girl soon emerged, looking around the room for a wallet, finding it on the coffee table and searching through the bills. "Here," she spoke, pulling out a five as she looked up. Her brow furrowed slightly. Emeline could sense a customer service smile from a mile away.
"Is anything wrong?" she frowned. It was a weird question to ask, but the girl looked about their age and she seemed a bit distraught despite the smile on her face.

Confusion flickered across Amaya’s face at the boy’s exclamation, but quickly gave way to subdued amusement. “Someone’s looking forward to their pizza,” she remarked dryly as he scavenged for change.
Her eyes darted to the open gap as the other resident, presumably ‘Em’, stepped forward. She gratefully accepted the tip from her outstretched hand, quirking an eyebrow at her question and then blinking in surprise.
Her smile slipped a little, more sheepish as she replied, “Am I that obvious? I actually wanted to ask you if you have a jumper battery or cables I could borrow. My car broke down literally the moment I put it in park and I’m pretty sure it’s ‘cause of the battery.” Her nose scrunched a little at the words, her hands automatically folding the cash and slipping it into her pocket as she spoke.

Ash flashed her a grin and a thumbs up before maneuvering the boxes onto the table. Oh yeah. He was looking forward to the pizzas, thank you very much. By the time Emeline was handing the money over to Amaya, he was already taking a fresh slice out of the box.
Emeline however, gave Amaya a sympathetic frown. "Shit, that sucks, I'm sorry," she frowned, glancing at the apartment, "I don't actually drive, so I don't own a jumper...but hey, I might know someone who can help out? Or I mean, do you need to call someone?"
She gestured at the apartment. "Why don't you come in for a bit? It's cold as fuck out there anyway. I'll give a friend a call, he doesn't live too far and I'm sure he has what you need."
Ash was already beckoning Amaya over. "What's your name again?" he asked, his mouth full, "I know you just delivered these, but you can have a slice if you wanna."

Amaya wasn’t quite sure how much she wanted to enter the apartment of two total strangers, but Em was right—it was freezing out and she really didn’t want to have to wait in her temporarily heater-less car for a different stranger to help. Besides, the boy, at least, seemed too preoccupied with the pizza to have room for any malicious intent.
She stepped past the opening with a grateful, “That would be awesome,” then wandered in a few more steps at Asham’s prompting.
“Amaya. And uh, I’m okay, but thanks. I think if I intruded anymore, I’d have to give my tip back,” she responded with a small laugh, pointedly ignoring the glimpse of half-chewed pizza she'd gotten. “Plus, I make sure to snack all shift so I’m not tempted to eat anything I shouldn’t.” It was phrased like a joke, but it had happened. Once. Not that long ago...
“You know, I don’t think I caught your names, either,” she commented, casually reaching for her phone and pulling up her boss’s contact. Better to text him some details now than be lectured a bunch later on, she figured.

Emeline closed the door after Amaya before grabbing her phone, quickly dialing a number to call a friend. She headed to the side, where the open kitchen was, waiting for whoever was on the other side to pick up.
Ash, however, didn't seem to be all that bothered. He chuckled at Amaya's comment. "Honestly, don't worry about it," he shrugged, giving her a sympathetic smile, "sucks about your car though. I swear, sometimes it's like the universe knows when you're having a bad day and just wants to send you a curveball, right?"
His eyes were still trained on the TV, but when Amaya asked her question, he looked up with a bright grin. "Oh, I'm Ash," he spoke, before gesturing towards the other girl, "that's Emeline, but you can call her Em. Don't think anyone calls her by her full name these days. We have that in common I guess."
The boy seemed to talk almost a mile a minute. "Honestly I have no idea why my parents named me Asham, it's something that's supposed to mean like...I'unno, struggle or something? Like what a rude ass name. Ugh, seriously. So Amaya, right? Does anyone call you Maya, or Amy? Which one do you prefer anyway?"

Her eyes tracked Ash’s to the TV, searching for what caught his attention, only to find him looking at her again moments later. She shrugged helplessly at his miniature tangent, offering a feeble, “Maybe they liked the way it sounds? It has a nice ring to it, but so does ‘Ash’.”
A smidge of surprise flickered across her face at his question, but it quickly shifted into something more curious. “My parents call me ‘Amy’, but most people tend to stick to my full name. My boss calls me ‘Maya’, but only because he knows it annoys me. He’s an old family friend and probably the only one that can get away with it,” she explained with a somewhat fond eye roll.
Her phone buzzed in her hand almost immediately after she finished speaking. “Speak of the devil,” she mumbled as she glanced over the text, her stance automatically relaxing at the apparent news. “Since you guys were my last delivery, he says don’t worry about giving him the money until tomorrow. He also says to say thanks on my behalf and that he’ll give you guys a discount next time you order,” she added, glancing at Em and making a mental note to pass on the sentiment when she was off the phone.

Ash had already forgotten about the conversation regarding his name by then. "Maya sounds good, mind if I call you that?" he gave her a grin, "I mean if it really annoys you...ugh, Amy sounds weird though." It wasn't that Ash minded calling anyone their full name, but he often talked so quickly that he barely fit a three-syllable name in all that he wanted to say.
He gave her a grin at the news. "That's good!" he exclaimed, though his smile quickly faded to a pensive look, "I mean, how are you going to get home? You know which bus you need to take? I know Em said she's getting help but you know, it's a bit late."
"Oh!" he exclaimed, "did you want anything to drink? Water? Soda? Uh...not sure if you want any but we have beer in the fridge too. Kinda rude of me not to offer earlier."
Emeline finally emerged, holding the phone away from her face. "My friend said he might be able to swing by with the battery, but he's still at work," she frowned, "he's off in an hour, if you want to wait?"

Amaya arched an eyebrow at his ‘Amy’ comment, wondering if she should take it as an insult… But he’d already moved onto another topic, and judging by his apparent lack of filter, she decided to let it slide. She waited until he finished, then set about answering as systematically as she could, beginning with, “You can call me ‘Maya’ if you have to, ‘Meat Lovers’.” She motioned towards the box of pizza he’d opened to emphasize her point, crossing her arms with vague amusement.
His question concerning how she was going to get home threw her for a small loop, mainly because she hadn’t yet anticipated an eventuality where she couldn’t get her car to start, but luckily she had an answer. “No clue about the buses, but that’s what Uber’s for. Though I’d have to call someone to have my car towed, first,” she added, inwardly hoping it didn’t come to that so she didn’t get an earful from her parents.
“And water sounds great, actually,” she finished, just in time to see Emeline re-enter the room.
She paused, shifting her weight contemplatively and glancing back at Ash as if he had the answer. Finally she looked back to Em and responded, “If I’m not interrupting any plans, and if you’re both absolutely sure you're okay with a stranger hanging around, then it’d be appreciated.”

Ash looked over at Amaya, before bursting out into laughter. "Is that my nickname now?" he looked way too amused about it, "god let me just say, that is more accurate than you think." Ash never could resist a dirty joke, after all, and hey, he wasn't shy. He chuckled, still thinking of the nickname, as he moved towards the kitchen to grab a glass of water for her.
At Amaya's response, Emeline only gave a kind smile. "You're not bothering us, we're probably sticking around for a bit until tonight. Actually, we were going to head down to Central Park with a couple of friends after midnight. They're all from our high school or people Ash somehow became friends with, honestly, don't ask me how. We're strangers but if you'd like, we always have room for one more."
It was true, their little ragtag group of friends were strange in the sense that they found each other in a series of meet-cutes and just Ash talking way too much and inviting people to random things, here and there.
"It's chill if not though," Emeline replied quickly, as she sat down to eat her own pizza now, "not trying to kidnap you, we promise."
"She'll kidnap you, but I won't," Ash quipped, and Emeline rolled her eyes, as he gave her a glass of water and held a beer for himself.
"Shut up before I report you for underage drinking," Emeline snarked back, grabbing the bottle from him and taking a sip. "So are you still studying and working part time or working full time? Hopefully the car's easy to fix; it'll suck if you were working full-time and that happened."

The joke caught her off guard and Amaya laughed in spite of herself. “Something we have in common, I suppose. Although I’m not a very picky eater, if you catch my drift,” she added with a wink, a much more genuine grin resting on her face as she addressed Emeline again.
Again, she paused, but it took a significantly shorter amount of time for her to shrug in response. “Why not? I’ve never been kidnapped before. Sounds fun,” she remarked offhandedly, taking the glass from Ash with a grateful nod.
There was a moment of indecision before she took a seat near Em, slipping two beat up drumsticks out of her back pocket and resting them on the coffee table along with her hat. She took a sip of her water, then answered, “I’m part-time and studying, and agreed. My car shouldn’t be too hard to fix, thankfully. I’ve known for ages I need to get the alternator replaced, but kept pushing it off because of school... Honestly I kinda deserved it breaking down on me.”
With another glance at the two, she asked, “How old are you? Under twenty-one and twenty-one or older, I figure.” She motioned towards Ash and Em respectively as she spoke, then added, “I’ll be eighteen in September.”

He laughed. "Don't worry, Eme's the same," he winked, as the other girl gave him a look.
"Yeesh, air out all my dirty laundry, why don't you?" she snorted, though she seemed pleased that Amaya seemed comfortable enough to join them.
Emeline laughed. "–and this is why I just don't drive. I swear the number of times I hear my friends talk about how driving in the city's a nightmare," she chuckled, "I admire you grit at least. I would not have the patience to fix a car on my own."
At her guess, Ash gave her a gasp. "Oh my god baby. Thank fuck I'm not the youngest one anymore, I was starting to think I'd be stuck being the baby of the group forever."
"Jeez, you don't have to be so dramatic," Eme snorted, "and you're literally like, a year older. You're still baby to me." She had a smug grin on her face, before she turned to Amaya. "I'm twenty-one, freshly legal and all, which means I'm now his number one alcohol supplier."

“I wish I could say it’s cheaper than taxis or ubers or the metro, but honestly I’m not even sure I can say that with how often my crap car has to be fixed. But it gets the job done more than not, so…” She trailed off, taking another sip and glancing between the two at their exchange.
She met Ash’s eyes and gestured towards Em, saying, “You’re telling me you’re babied and you’re basically spoon-fed alcohol? If that’s what being the youngest entails, sign me up. Consider my career as an oldest child over.” She gave a wry smile and set her glass down before speaking up once again.
“So, jokes aside, you guys are like the chillest people I’ve ever met and I just want to know: How do you do it?”
(sorry this took so long rip)

Emeline laughed. "I guess it'd be pretty hard to deliver pizzas on an uber," the young woman smirked, "but yeah, I can see how having a car would be useful. You don't have to wait outside in the rain all the damn time."
Ash gave Maya a grin, before glancing turning to Em, and back to Maya again. "Pretty sure Em would disagree about me being babied, but now that I think of it, we're both the baby of the family, aren't we?" He gave his flatmate a chuckle.
She rolled her eyes. "If you call me a baby again I'll send you back to your parents," she scoffed, before turning to Maya. "Pretty sure I'm not the mother figure to any of these punks but you're welcome to help me whip this one into shape."
Ash laughed, before realizing who exactly Emeline was talking about. "Hey!" he protested at the statement, "I'm perfectly well-behaved thank you very much." He chuckled, before looking at Amaya with bright eyes. "What do you mean?"
Eme smirked. "It's not about being chill, it's more about pretending life is fine while it steamrolls you, you know?" she chuckled, "but I think...not having your car break down on you helps a lot. If that doesn't work, smoking up helps."
"Em!" Ash spoke, sounding appalled, "you shouldn't be corrupting teenagers!"
Eme laughed, before turning to Maya with a grin. "To be honest, you just caught us on a relaxation day. I'm definitely a lot more stressy at work. I feel like you're pretty chill for someone who's probably had the worst day ever too. If we ever have a chill club, you'd make it in."
