A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

nostalgic for Erik & Lucy
New York City was a haven for anyone who hoped to run away and start a new life. That was what had drawn him to America in the first place, years ago. Humans were all like driftwood, but here, they were more so than in the other places he had dwelled in. They didn't carry their roots and drown themselves when they couldn't wring themselves out of the mud; they simply moved here and there, wherever work was. Just like him, really. Despite having existed for near three hundred years, he never set his roots down. Better keep moving on, lest he was found again. Having lived life as a demon for what seemed like forever to him, only few things drew any type of fear from him. Angels were perhaps unfortunate at best and a challenge at its worst; they hadn't been much of a presence for years now. Hunters? Pah, he wasn't scared of some stupid humans who thought they could take down a lion posing as a sheep. They didn't understand a thing, that if a demon was persistently causing trouble, they weren't the powerful ones. Powerful ones kept to their own; they existed and sank their roots into civilisations before watching them fall. Third? Well, he was on the run, wasn't he? If he was lucky, a certain wise creature once left an artefact around here, one that was rumoured to even slay gods. If that couldn't kill him nothing could, right? A sneer appeared on his face, as the young man drew the coat over his shoulders a little tighter to keep out the wind, glancing left and right as he crossed the street towards Central Park in the cover of the night, with no regards for anything but his end goal tonight.

When her endless playthings around her penthouse began to bore her, Lucy always found her way onto the city streets. Right now her on again off again fling, Ryder, was out of the country with his father on a business trip, which probably meant he was fucking random European girls. Not that Lucy cared, not really, but his absence meant a certain level of boredom.
Yasmin and Julie had been over earlier in the evening, and they had gone to a rooftop bar where she'd put the tab on her mom's credit card, and then Lucy had wandered home by herself. Normally on a night like this she'd be scoping out some party to attend, but for some reason she just wanted to be alone. None of her usual amusements seemed to hold any appeal, until she remembered that she had recently joined the Hunters.
It had been luck really, that had caused her to overhear two Hunters talking in an alleyway. She'd been out on the fire escape of her friend's apartment, lighting up a joint, and they hadn't had the good sense to look up. Their whispered conversations of literal fae and angels had sparked her interest, and she'd dropped down from the fire escape to ask them more. They had nearly clammed up- she had to threaten legal action on some random trespassing charge before they rolled their eyes and explained what they meant. Perhaps they had expected her to laugh them off and dismiss their ideas as crazy, but she accepted what they told her readily and asked to join.
So she'd been training, which was great for her health when she didn't wake up hungover and dehydrated. Lucy had even accompanied another hunter on a mission and succeeding in taking down a loose mutant. That had been a few months ago, and she'd forgotten the hobby when her parents had taken her to the Maldives for a week. But tonight she had remembered, taken a shot for good luck, and grabbed her customized knife, which she had ordered the day after training had begun. Central Park wasn't too far from her apartment, so she went there first, with her Burberry coat and sharpened knife, to patrol the park in search of some new excitement.

It was hard to sense anything in Central Park, not for the lack of energies and strange beings out there, but perhaps because there had been too much, or perhaps...everything was just too faint to detect. Whatever it was, he had only found it by chance, an old story found in a book about native legends that hinted of a riddle...
There were little to no remaining landmarks of the people who once lived here but Erik didn't care. If a ceremonial blade was buried in the forest that could even kill angels, he needed it. On the bright side, there was a big chance he'd never run into him again but in cases like this, one always had to have a backup plan.
Pulling his sleeves up, continued his walk, almost skipping in the strange giddy way he usually walked, not quite skittish and not quite serious either. His eyes flashed as he passed a group of ladies leaving the park, giving them a smirk and a wave as giggled, rolling their eyes and giving him a smirk as they talked amongst themselves. He grinned, before continuing forward, going into the darkness unknown. He could see clearly in the night, but in his distracted state, he bumped into a girl walking the other direction.
"Sorry," he spoke absentmindedly, not quite paying attention whatsoever.

"Careful," Lucy said, stumbling back a step with a flash of annoyance. Like all her moods however, the annoyance morphed into amusement before she really had time to dwell on the emotion. Here was an opportunity to spice things up, to interact with someone outside of her ever-shifting circle of comrades and enemies. People fascinated Lucy- they always had something to discover, something new and flashy just under the surface.
The only downside was that some people were truly boring and Lucy quickly lost interest in them as well. But each new encounter represented a potential opportunity for... well, for something she couldn't quite put her finger on.
"You're really going for a creep aesthetic tonight, huh?" Lucy asked, eyeing up the stranger with a growing grin. "Dressed in a long coat and walking the paths in the middle of the night alone. You look like you're searching for someone to assault or something." It was a brave statement, considering it might be true, but Lucy had a sense of security with her knife- and even if that fell through, well she'd never feared death much before.

Erik rarely stopped for anything–not drunken men trying to start a fight, nor the elderly who needed help, nor women giving him a wink and a flirtatious comment–but perhaps it was because the night was young, or that he was actually not in the clearest headspace, he turned to look at the girl who was now speaking to him.
Jeez, couldn't she tell he was in a hurry? Still, life was short for these humans and practically eternal for his kind. It wouldn't hurt to stop for a moment, would it? His expression seemed calculated as his eyes roamed, up and down the young lady, before a sense of amusement seemed to bloom on his expression.
"You judge every book by its cover?" he chuckled, his head tilting slightly to the side, "you know, a young lady walking through the dark in a fancy Burberry coat...not to be crude, but it's almost as if you're asking for trouble too, hun. If I was a creep, you'd best be running off to your little Upper West Side penthouse before daddy's little princess gets mugged by a real creep out here."

Lucy laughed in response, looking down at her coat. "I'm surprised you know fashion enough to tell this was a Burberry coat, especially in the dark. And you're right about my character except in one regard. I'm mommy's little princess- she's the heiress in my family."
Lucy's frankness had always been a key part of who she was- she confessed (most) things freely, since it amused her to see people's reactions. If Lucy didn't like you, you knew immediately. But this strange man was kind of funny, and she wanted to see what else he would say.
"Don't worry about me. If I get mugged, I can handle it." She tapped a spot on her waist, where her knife presumably sat. "I'm armed and I've been training. Maybe I came out here looking for trouble. So if you want any, I'm ready to stop you. But I don't think you'll attack me."

The man smirked. She was surprised he knew it was a Burberry coat? "Please, anyone with eyes could tell," he snorted. He had lived long enough in this city to know, and fortunately for him, he wasn't limited in the way human attitudes were, that only girls could know what fashion was. Yeesh, rich girls were all the same weren't they? Flaunting their little family connections; it seems like some things never changed, even in a hundred years, he thought.
The one thing that stood out was that she clearly had a lot more spunk than those rich kids; and plenty of attitude to match. An amused smirk appeared on his face; it certainly wasn't common for someone to address him that way and to get so up in his face about his business and all. A challenge, hm? Erik had plenty of time, and if it wasn't a demon's job to figure out a person's weakness and to exploit it, what else was it? He always breaking the ones with a little attitude problem best; they were fun. It was like having a meal at 11 Madison; the expensive wines and the long hours slaving over the meal made it much more delicious.
"Oh you can handle it hm?" he chuckled, "okay, humor me. What kind of training have you had? Did a little yoga? Took a fit boxing class that teaches you 'self defense?' Please, you really think those things work?" He had turned around at this point, now sauntering over to the girl. "I've met girls like you. I'm guessing...parents didn't pay you enough attention? Grew up getting everything but still not satisfied? Itching to get into a fight because of years of unprocessed anger issues?"
He grinned. "Which one is it? You know I love a good guessing game."

Lucy seemed not the least bit phased, her dark brown eyes watching him as he approached, maintaining her casual standing posture. She truly was surprised that he knew- not even the rich boys she hung out with gave a shit about fashion. And here was this strange man, at least marginally educated in the fashion trends.
"I'll humor you," she responded cheerfully. "It's the second one. My life is great, to be quite honest with you, but I've always been craving something more. The distractions do for a bit, but even they get boring." A smile spread over her even lips, tilting her head to look at him closely.
She rolled her shoulders back easily, feeling the faint sense of strength that had grown there in the last few weeks. "In terms of training, I've been doing conditioning exercises and stamina building. You could say I like to go looking for trouble- I like to look for the dark things that lurk around the city, co-existing with humanity." For an uneducated listener, it may sound like she was talking about perverted humans- pedophiles, rapists, the like. But Lucy was speaking quite frankly about monster hunting, and she was wondering if he'd pick up on that, or if he'd dismiss her as a lunatic.

He laughed at her response, finding this conversation becoming more and more amusing. These days, it wasn't exactly hard to find someone who was just a little bit unhinged; still, it was always a pleasure. Rich kids were the easiest; they were just so unbothered by the world around them. People who were handed life on a gold platter rarely questioned whether anything was poisoned anymore.
"What, the sex drugs and rock and roll not good enough for you?" he smirked, crossing his arms, "look, I might be wearing a dark outfit walking in the middle of the park but I'm not a dealer; if you need one there's probably better places to look, no?"
He wasn't exactly paying attention to the little pretend conversation they were having...until she mentioned that she was looking for something that lurked in the dark. Oh? He fought the easy smirk that would naturally appear on his face. A hunter eh? It had been years since he had come across one; the New York hunters seemed to enjoy staying hidden these days, which wouldn't surprise him. The city was chaotic enough.
"Sounds like a mission," he replied nonchalantly, raising a brow at her, "you know, you really shouldn't be trusting those little karate classes too much. Going out of your way to hunt down rapists and catcallers...well, that seems like a one-way ticket to some expensive vigilante lawsuit, though I guess daddy's gonna bail you out huh?"
If she was a hunter, well, it'd be better to get her out of the way before he went hunting for the artifact. He wasn't afraid of little idiot children thinking they could fight a demon, but they caused a racket, and well, he hoped to do this without catching any unwanted attention.

"I don't need a dealer," she told him with another bright smile. Lucy was undeniably pretty, with her large brown eyes and carefully straightened raven hair, but there was something that flashed in her eyes from time to time that made her friends and her flings question her sanity. Sometimes it came out when she suggested walking the edge of the rooftop after a few too many shots, or when she drove too fast down the highways outside of the city.
That look was out now, twinkling behind her lashes, speaking of some recklessness, bordering on insanity, that even her other rich friends couldn't match. "And it is a mission," she said in a lower voice, leaning in confidentially. "But I think you and I both know it isn't rapists I'm after."
That smirk that had flashed over his face when she brought up her hunting had cued her in. Lucy considered herself a good reader of people, and she had noticed the way he had subtly perked up. He knew what she was doing out here, and she didn't want to play any more of this conversation game. "And since you know, maybe you can help me find the things I'm truly hunting."

She knew how to read people, Erik could admit that. Seemed like that was a talent some of the well-to-do seemed to develop too early, he mused, as his gaze looked the girl up and down. What was a rich kid like her doing hunting monsters in the first place? How strange.
"Didn't your mother ever tell you that things that go bump in the night probably don't want to be found?" he had his shit-eating grin on his face, "not that I don't trust you to take care of yourself, sweetheart, but isn't that a bit out of your depth?"
Perhaps he should've cared a lot more about revealing himself, but hunters never scared him. They couldn't truly hurt a demon. The only thing demons feared were their true names, and he had buried that years ago, along with his past. The only think he was truly fearful of was the sole creature who still remembered him.
"–and what if I don't?" he teased, eyes gleaming, "who says anything I know is free? Everything comes at a price, and what's yours?"
It was his turn to lean closer. "So what's your limit? Your price?" he mused, almost in a sing-song manner, "tell me more about yourself, dear. What's in it for me?"

"You are no in way obligated to help me out." Lucy didn't lean away, matching Erik's energy beat for beat. Her own version of an insufferable grin was on her high bred features- this was when she felt most alive, doing something idiotic like conversing with a dangerous stranger in the dark paths of Central Park.
As he asked the question, she hummed thoughtfully. "Well, what do you want? Drugs? Money? Sex? I have a lot of things to offer- and a few that I can't provide. And if you don't want to help me at all, we can part ways and I'll forget I ever saw you here."
She hoped he wouldn't opt for that. This was a fun game they were playing, far more entertaining than walking around and hoping to bump into something, and she wasn't quite ready for it to end.

Hm, so she was willing to play the game. Interesting. He wondered if a young hunter like her had ever encountered a demon. His kind was rare enough, after all, and most humans didn't realize what kind of creature they really were messing with...but that was the fun part, wasn't it?
Stealing a soul wasn't as outright as making them sign it over sometimes. It was simply knowing a human inside out, and figuring what their heart desired most in the world, no? A chuckle left his mouth. She could be of use, after all. A girl like that with that spunk, the attitude...Erik couldn't deny he was always hungry for more. Information, revenge, a greater high...any of that sounded great, after all.
"Hm, how about this, I'll point you in a direction if you give me an honest answer to a question about yourself," he mused, "it's just that...well, I'm curious. You're the kind of girl who seems like they have everything they'd want or need. Money, looks, parents who give you everything, living in a city like New York...and yet you're choosing to throw that all away for what? Revenge? Excitement? Some sort of high?"
He bit his lip, the smirk still on his face. "I just want to know what you really want. What's the motivation here, and how far are you willing to go to get what you want?"

An interesting question, but Lucy wasn't sure there was an answer. Still, her lips pursed thoughtfully, mulling it over. "I'm flattered that you think I have it all, but that's just it. It's boring. It's all the same, day after day. No risk, no reward, just endless parties and rooms full of people who don't understand my desire for more."
At the suggestion of a motivation, she just shrugged coyly. "No revenge. Excitement and high, sure. Life's so much more exhilarating when you have something to lose." All her previous dares had reflected that- a simple slip of the foot and her body would plummet to the sidewalk, a wrong turn while speeding could mean a flipped car and her crushed body. Even thinking about it made her eyes light up. She'd never met someone who could match her energy- they'd always knocked her down a peg or two. But this man, whose name she still didn't know, was feeding her insanity.
"And how far I go depends on what you're offering." She leaned closer, close enough to feel the heat of his breath, looking directly into his eyes. "I've hunted some of the lower level creatures, but those are starting to lose their appeal- I want to go big. Demons and angels. Imagine how it'd feel to take down the creatures of so many major religions! I guess angels would be less fun, since they're supposed to be the 'good guys'- so what do you know about demon hunting?"

So she craved power. That was telling enough; he had assumed that much. It was always power or revenge that drove hunters to do what they did, more so than any claims of 'justice' or 'doing the right thing'...after all, doing right by the world rarely meant putting their lives in danger. It was curious though; he still couldn't figure her out. She already had power; what power would she gain from this?
Well, it seemed like he didn't have to ask too much. Did she want to defeat angels and demons? Had she figured out what he was? Well, he certainly underestimated her if she did. Of course, he could grant this sort of petty wish in its base form, perhaps give a hunter a bit of an advantage in their control, up their charisma to make demons and angels just a little more charmed when they met her, lower their guard a little...hm, who was to say that some other stupid demon hadn't fallen for this trick before?
Then again, demons were all viciously loyal to their generals. Wishes weren't often granted in some stupid manner, they were calculated, and Erik suddenly thought of his own mission. Killing Abraxas would require more than just himself; the other demon was higher up in the rankings. After all, his brother didn't simply sell his own soul, but both of theirs for the power it gave him. If there was any way to destroy the other demon while tying another follower to his own power, well...this could kill two birds with one stone. After all, the artefact he was after could grant something simple to her, maybe give her an advantage, a small one only of course. He didn't trust humans not to abuse any type of power, especially an erratic hunter like herself.
"Let's just say I know how to kill a demon," he chuckled, "and I know a way to make it easier for you to charm a demon or an angel...you know, put them off guard, have a bit of control over them. What are you willing to do for me in return?"
