It had been about two weeks since the night in the bar. Getting their schedules to align had been difficult but it seemed like fate itself intervened and had given them both this one free day.
The afternoon sun was bright and there was a certain crispness in the air that foreshadowed the end of summer. The store Eli had mentioned was a fair distance from her apartment, but Blake had decided to walk instead of ride there to take advantage of the weather and catch up on her favorite podcasts.
Despite her best efforts to quash it, her chest fluttered. It had been a while since she'd been on a date. Did this count as a date? Had it been so long that she'd forgotten how dates work? No, that was stupid. She forced herself to take a deep breath.
She'd told Alexei where she was going because it was drilled into her. Never go anywhere unfamiliar alone—and if you do go alone, make sure somebody knows about it. Some hunters hunted solo, of course, but that was not the Rusakov way. There was safety in numbers and though Blake herself was one of the more individualistic members of her family, she couldn't deny the truth in that. And Alexei had been all for the...the date, or whatever it was.
She turned a corner and she could see the furniture store at the end of the block. She was the first to arrive, it seemed, and when she got closer, she moved to the side and busied herself with her phone while she waited.
