A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

"God. I have never done something as tedious as this before.. like ever."
A discontent sigh exited her slightly stained lip. Donning gloves for reasons more than cosmetic. Lorelei Kim was plucking a number of different types of greenery out of the earth with these gloves on. As she brought them closer to her body so that she could deposit them in the mason jar that she had fastened comfortably in the middle of her birkin, it was as though they threatened to wither and die the second she brought them near her core. Luckily enough this was expected, so the girl made efforts to move quickly and efficiently. Lorelei continued to venture around the park for quite a while actually, until she was appeased with both the specie and amount of the herbs that she had picked up. Anyone else would've just got in an uber and went into a nearby market, but it was as though her body was naturally acclimated to accept herbs straight from the earth within it.
"Enough."
The girl declared, standing up and dusting off her expensive leather gloves. Upon dusting them off she tucked a lock of her onyx colored hair behind her ear so that she could keep it out of her face while she inspected the herbs behind her glasses. When everything was in order, she pulled the opening of her purse together so that the herbs wouldn't fall out or anything, and she made her way to a nearby bench that she could take a seat at. When Lorelei located a bench that she deemed fit for sitting, she slowly put down her purse and fished out a napkin that she could use to sanitize the bench.. but only the area where she was going to sit her bottom at and nothing more! When the sanitization process came to an end, the girl made an effort to stay within the area that she had claimed as hers.
Being quite comfortable in her tweed jacket, Lorelei began to grow relaxed. The sun was set and a large cone of moonlight shone down on her person as she removed a black leather bound book from her purse. She pursed her lips as she flipped through the pages. Luckily enough Lorelei had an amazing memory and she managed to remember at least the page that she was on before closing the book last time.
With her book now laid open on her tweed skirt, and her hands pinned to each side of it she began reading the novel, unbothered and relaxed.

It wasn't often that Eli found himself with time to spend an evening at the park, but the pup scouts had ended later than he thought. There was a nearby conservatory, one that even he found impressive, and the kids had loved it. They spent every moment running around, oohing and aahing at the various plants and gardens they had. It had been tough, trying to wrangle them up and prevent any of them from getting lost, but it had been worth it.
With a lovely end to their field trip day, he had ended up watching the sunset–god knows when he'd be able to do that next–and finding his way around the city. The night was still young, and he had grabbed a kebab from a small shop, before heading towards the park. It always had a feeling of home; the different wild grasses and the various trees that grew around made this specific park seem wilder than others. Many of New York City's parks were a little too manicured for his taste; they didn't hold the magic of the wild forests and tundra he often dreamed of visiting again.
Spotting a bench, he shifted his direction towards it, before realizing it already had an occupant. Right, she wouldn't mind, would she? He knew he could seem rather intimidating from just his stature, but it seemed like a decent place to stop for a quick bite, and the girl seemed rather relaxed, reading her book in silence.
"Mind if I sit?" he asked with a friendly smile, gesturing to the other side of the bench, "only if you don't mind, of course."

It was a habit for the girl to lick one of her fingers so that it was easier to turn the pages of the book that she was reading. however since she had gloves on what her tongue was met with was an odd leather-y sensation.. her face warped into one of disgust, her eyes glanced around the vicinity to see if anyone would've seen her perform such an unforgivable mistake. A soft sigh escaped her lips whenever her worried were relieved, "Thank God.."
Now having her focus back on the book that was set open to her lap, she continued to flip through the pages and absorb the information that was being presented to her in the book. It was a complex story, one with many twists and turns that'd leave just anyone's mind a bit jumbled. While it did do that to her a bit, she read slowly and took it one sentence at a time so that she wouldn't find herself overwhelmed. Usually she would've just read at her house, but something about sitting unbothered surrounded by organic material soothed her.. so of course she took the opportunity to relax at the park when she could. It was a rare occasion for such a densely populated city as New York to have a vacant park.
Though definitely smaller in stature, Lorelei could be quite intimidating herself. It was as though there was an energy around her that was draining to be around.. of course it physically wasn't but when spending hours on her she could seem like a black cloud. Oblivious to the fact that someone had just took a glance at her, she continued to read her book.. until she heard a voice - specifically one belonging to a male.
Two dark orbs glanced up towards him as she lifted her head from the book. This was a public park, and technically she had no ownership over it.. so what would she look like refusing the boy a seat. "I suppose."

The other woman seemed too absorbed into her book to really care, but he felt almost a strange feeling, that she probably didn't want him there in the first place. Still, she offered the seat and Eli wasn't one to refuse a kind offer, even if it had seemed rather reluctant. Not to mention, his stomach was already speaking in stern words, and the grumble made him even more eager to unwrap his dinner and devour it.
Maybe it was a wolf physiology thing, but he was always hungry. Two wraps wouldn't really be enough, but again, the night was young. He'd always have time for more food later on. Taking his seat, he quickly pealed at the aluminum foil, his food still warm to touch. He didn't hesitate in taking his first bite, the explosion of flavor already making him hungry for more. He had to slow himself down to not seem like an absolute savage, eating in front of a stranger.
Eli's eyes drifted to the book she was reading. Leather-bound with an intricate cover; it seemed curious. The girl had a curious scent too, of fresh herbs and wild grasses, but of something else he couldn't quite place. Interesting, to say the least.
Swallowing his food, he peered at the book again. "What's the book about?" he offered tentatively, "it seems pretty interesting. I've never seen a cover like this on a book in the library; is it any good?"

That feeling was accurate to the way that she was feeling, but she preferred to present herself in a stoic fashion rather than a cruel one. She usually saved that side of herself for arguments. After staring at him for a few seconds, she brought her eyes back down onto the words inside of the book.. hoping that he wouldn't make too much noise to interrupt her focus on the pages. He didn't look like he'd be loud.
Oddly enough, Lorelei was quite the opposite. She found herself being full after every extremely light meal that she was a part of. A majority, if not all, of the things she consumed were organic. It processed better, and she usually found herself with a terrible stomach ache if she consumed something that had been through a number of machine lines at some factory where it was injected with fatty substances.
Lorelei traced her index finger along the pages of the book, unaware of the fact that he very well could have been reading with her. Her finger could've moved way faster than it did, but as stated prior the girl was trying to enjoy and understand the story rather than just finishing it.
Her eyebrow quirked at the smell of meat, and she glanced over to the boy.. coincidentally enough it was right when he made the inquiry. "Finnegans Wake." Lorelei nodded in response to the follow up question. "Well. I really like it.. though I can't say the same for most people. It can be very hard to read if you don't focus." While speaking her finger was poised beneath the word that she left off on.

Finnegan's wake? He had heard of the book before, but he had never read it. His knowledge of classics were limited to Call of the Wild–now who could resist a good dog book?–Great Gatsby, and a couple of books by Hemmingway and Vonnegut. These days, most of the books he read were on his field, books about muscles and physiotherapy, and things like that. It wasn't like he had much time for leisurely reads; between pack duties and his day job, the moments between were often for daily necessities and keeping in touch with the few friends he had in the city.
"Sounds interesting, what's it about?" he asked, still eating his kebab, "that's if you don't mind explaining though...if I'm bothering you and you just want to read in peace, just tell me and I'll shut up." He knew New Yorkers didn't take talking to strangers as kindly as they did up north, but it was worth a try. Not everyone who was in New Yorker was a New Yorker anyway, and there were still friendly people who wanted a chat.
Though probably someone reading wasn't one of them. He felt a little self-conscious now; he was probably bothering the other girl. She'd probably tell him she wanted to read if she didn't want to chat, right?
