A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

McRorie
"Typical snobby witch," he muttered.
Yet she had cleaned up the mess and for that he was thankful.
"Ye'd best be careful with them books," he advised. "They come with baggage. And gremlins. I'll be happy to see the backs of them, sure.
"Methinks you've had some trouble with my kind that's soured you on us all. I'm sorry fer that, but some of us don't play well with others. I've been around too long to be bothered with that. Although the odd prank is fun."
For a moment or two, he looked deep in thought.
"What do ye mean about the end of the world? Why would we want that?" He asked in curiosity. "Who told ye that nonsense?"
This was the first McRorie had heard of this. If it was true then something needed to be done to stop this armageddon from happening.
"I'll take care of me girlie, never you mind about that," he told Rhiannon, "And I'll bring her up to date on the state of things.
"First of all, witch, would you be of a mind to please conjure me up some pants? I didn't need clothes as a cu and I lost the knack for conjuring meself decades ago."
The only clothing he had to his name was the leather collar still around his neck.

She scowled. Did the cu think she was an idiot or something? She knew the legends, the stories of their kind. She wasn't too fond of the fair folk, even if they did have something to do with the magic her kind had learned. She didn't trust these creatures.
Her eyes were still as sharp as ice as she glared at the dog. "You don't know the stories they have of your kind?" she sneered, "spectral hounds and stories of black dogs in the moors–all you bring are disasters to the land. We used to say that if you hear the sound of thy fearsome bark, you'd better start running. If they don't bring death to your door, they'll bring their friends, the Cŵn Annwn."
She smiled sardonically at the man, or well, the creature. "–and we all know who follows the spectral hounds." Rhiannon had grown up in the great famine, after all, when men used to cry out in the night, going white in terror, claiming to have heard their own deaths. She had seen enough as a child, hiding behind her mother's skirts, to know that if she'd ever meet one, she wouldn't show any fear.
Rhiannon may have feared death, but she'd never let him know it.
A distasteful expression came over her face, before she waved the wand once again, clothing the creature in a long coat, enough to seem moderately dressed. "You can thank me later on that one," she grunted.

McRorie
Finding himself dressed at last, McRorie again nodded to the witch. She seemed to have a good deal of knowledge about his kind and yes, they were harbingers of death, in most cases death that would come anyway. She should be glad that he wasn't a puca.
He stood up slowly. Like all fae, he was a beautiful thing, well built and pretty, but in a masculine way. Immediately he went to Hunter and picked her up gently. He carried her to the couch in the back and laid her on her back. The cu sat beside her and took her head into his lap, stroking her hair as she had caressed his own.
"Of course I know the stories. I took part in quite a few of them," McRorie admitted.
"I ran with Gwydion's pack and Herne's, but we generally harvest only those who are to die anyway. And yes, we do love to play with ye. Not all of us play nice.
"In fact I've been guilty of that too, but not right now."
He looked fondly at Hunter, "This one's different but she knows not a thing, not her power, nor ours. I was sent by Mrs. Wittershall to care for her and to keep her safe. I would lief have stayed as my cu form and none would be the wiser."
McRorie chuckled softly.
"Well, some of ye wouldn't have been the wiser.
"Yer own powers come from my kind and don't forget that fae have suffered at the hands of yer people too. Selkies with their hides stolen, fae deer shot, stolen magic and captive fairies. Yer not innocent of evil. Especially witches and warlocks. Always wanting more that they should have!
"We all have our share of evil."
He lifted his chin towards the books.
"Take the things. Beware of what you seek, for others seek it too. Remember that in some ponds yer a very small fish. Ye might want to stop being so stiff and to let others in who might be interested in helping ye. This one especially. She'll be an advantage in the battles to come."
With a slight smile he added, "And me thanks for the clothes."

The other creature's words didn't phase her. She merely sneered at his admittance. Oh if only he knew. Rhiannon could see his expression, a faint admission of his own guilt simply meant that he wasn't like her. He felt for his own wrong-doings, something Rhiannon couldn't quite relate anymore. Her hundreds of years depended on taking from others, after all. Guilt no longer found its way to her heart these days.
She knew of their history; it'd be hard not to, watching the world destroy the very spaces the Fae had lived in back in the day. Forests were wiped clean for humans to settle into at the other creatures' expense. She had mourned the very forests she grew up in, but she had moved on. A smirk made its way to her lips; she didn't see things as simply as he did.
"You see things in black and white," she raised a brow, "good and evil, right or wrong. The world isn't as simple as it is these days, hound, or the world will eat you up before you have time to bring about another death. There's only power and energy out there, and how far anyone's willing to go to seek it."
She was curious though, in the way the hunters and scientists were. They seemed to think Asterium held the power to limitless energy, and as a creature made from said energy, she wondered if there was any benefit in studying creatures such as this. They were rare of course, and frankly, Rhiannon didn't want anything to do with one, but knowledge was power, and the only thing Rhiannon craved was such. She grabbed the books. They'd be useful, after all, especially when he found the man who left his sigil in the grimoires. From what she heard of him last, he opened some type of strange coffee shop; she'd have to give that visit later.

Hunter
She started to come to with the feeling of a hand stroking her hair. It almost put her back to sleep, but then images came flooding back of her dog, a naked man, a little green thing and terrible fear. She opened her eyes and looked up into some gentle and slightly sad brown ones gazing down at her.
Hunter sat bolt upright.
"What the hell?" She began. Then she took stock of her surroundings. Rhiannon was still here with the kitten peeking out from her bag. McRorie was no where to be found, but then....
She looked behind herself and sitting on the couch was a lanky young man, a very nice looking one, with hair the color of her dog? He gave her a quick smile. At least this time he was clothed.
Hunter turned her attention back to Rhiannon, a quizzical expression on her face.
"What's going on here?" She jerked a finger over her shoulder. "And who's he?"
She looked profoundly confused and more than a little worried. Her hands shook as she arranged her hair nervously.

Rhiannon groaned internally; she had planned on leaving before the other girl woke up. From the looks of it, she seemed to have fallen pretty hard, and if anything, she had assumed the other woman would be out for an hour at least. Turns out ten minutes was enough for her to wake huh? She sighed, rolling her eyes; what had Hywel gotten himself into this time? Jesus, if she was to keep them both out of trouble, she'd make sure they never met again.
"I don't even know how to explain," she replied in a deadpan, already about to head out the door, before glancing at the cu and Hunter once more, realizing she had expected an answer. If she had the normal emotional span of a person, she might almost pity the girl. She was about to get herself thrown into a whole new world, she thought.
"That's...your dog? The wolfhound," she frowned, "don't ask me why or what because that's stuff he can answer but–" she glanced towards the cu with a raised brow. "A little word of advice? Stay out of it and get yourself as far as you can from all of this...magic and mysticism and all that. If you don't, you're only asking for trouble. Only time I'm ever going to tell you this; everything else is up to you, but if you know what's good, stay away from that thing–"
She gave Mcrorie a sharp look.
"–and stay away from me and my brother if you know what's good for you."

Hunter
The bookseller was taken aback. First of all, she'd just seen the impossible and now Hywel's sister was reaming her out or something. Hunter's confusion was replaced by a cool calm. Ignoring McRorie behind her, she fixed a level stare at Rhiannon.
"I am still ready to see you as a friend, but you're making it very hard for me. I don't take threats well, if that's what you're insinuating. If Hywel wishes to come over and read, or if I decide to go to the Gilded Hand, that is my business and his."
The air in the bookstore began to feel strange, almost as though it was thickening. Behind Hunter's back, McRorie shook his head in warning to Rhiannon, a worried look on his face.
"Enjoy your books. When you wish to be a little friendlier, come on back."
As Hunter spoke, the front door to the store swung slowly open by itself. McRorie put a hand on Hunter's shoulder.
"I'll be takin' care of this," he told Rhiannon, "But I'd suggest that ye leave now. Things here aren't what they seem, I'm thinkin'."

Rhiannon didn't take threats well either, and she gave Hunter a strange look, her brow furrowing for a second, as if thinking through something, before her expression straightened back into the usual cool façade. It didn't matter; she'd avoid this place after, anyway. Frankly, she didn't know why this girl was being so attached to the idea of being friends. Clearly, this sort of relationship only went one way; Rhiannon rarely considered anyone a 'friend.'
A scoff left her mouth as she turned to leave. Even if Hunter refused to listen, she knew that the confirmation that the mutt was very much of the fair folk would be enough to keep Hywel wary; the man might not fear death, but he had his own demons to confront all the same.
Rhiannon exited the door, the bell signaling her departure. She had work to do.

Hunter and McRorie
"Why are some people so difficult?" Hunter asked no one in particular.
She leaned back into the couch. Suddenly she remembered the man who sat beside her and gave a small jump. Turning to face him, she studied him intently. When standing he would be a little over six feet tall and she could tell, even with the coat on, that he was built like a dancer. His fingers were long, like a piano player's. She didn't want to seem rude, but she also considered his face.
He was blue eyed perfection, perhaps a little too effeminate for some women, with long, uneven greyish black hair. The grey didn't make him look older, it simply salted itself through his locks, just like the wolfhound's coat. If a man could have brindle hair, this man did and it looked good on him.
McRorie simply say at her side, one leg folded under him, the other stretching out onto the floor. He suffered her investigation with a stoic demeanor and waited for the ensuing questions to start. He didn't have to wait long.
"So, really, who are you?" Hunter asked.
The cu shrugged, "I'm your hound, McRorie. And before ye get all upset, let me explain something.
"You know all of those fairy tales ye heard when ye was a wee one? Well, they're all based on fact. They're true. Most of us lived among ye and ye never knew it. Some of us are too odd to be able to do this, so we hid. I'd say most humans still have no idea that we exist. Well, that's changed now for ye. Ye know now that we're here with ye."
Hunter sat like a statue, trying to absorb all of this information. It was a lot to learn all at once.
McRorie leaned forward a little, warning up to his subject.
"Most of us aren't here to hurt ye. We want to live our lives the best we can, just like ye do. In fact a lot of us need ye to live.
"Some of us are dangerous, like that witch that just left and her brother."
"You mean Hywel?" Hunter asked incredulously.
McRorie nodded. "Yep. That Rhiannon one is quite the girl. Her brother is cursed, but he seems to be a much friendlier type."
McRorie smiled, "I really like the wee cat, the witch's familiar. He tries to keep her grounded, but he finds it hard. She's a wee bit hard headed, that one. I have to tell ye, Hywel'll be your friend."
"Boy, do I ever feel dumb," Hunter mourned.
I'll run ye through things as we go, lass," McRorie assured her. "I'll stay like this as long as ye wants me to, but I can become a cu sidhe any time ye needs me to."
Hunter gave him a narrow stare.
"You mean all those times you were in my bedroom, you watched me dress and bathe? When I was naked?"
"I remember," McRorie answered.
"Oh my god," Hunter muttered.
McRorie just smiled.
