A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

(Hunter's just going to get a menagerie lmfao)
Hywel sighed, waiting by the front. He leaned on the wall, his head thumping lightly onto the brick for a moment. Was he just inviting trouble? He really shouldn't be associating with humans, especially ones who were befriending harbingers of death around these parts. It was bad for business.
Still, he waited for Hunter to secure the dog properly. Giving the creature a glare of his own, it spoke volumes. Don't mess it up again, his squinted gaze clearly said. A furry head nudged the man's hand, and he glanced down to see Sylvan again, having crawled out of the bag with a curious expression on his face.
"It's fine," he grumbled, before eyeing the cat, "you're not going to tell Rhiannon about this, are you?"
The cat gave him an innocent look, one that Hywel could read through. "Traitor," he accused the cat, who purred and playfully nibbled his hand, "and I thought you were on my side, you asshole."
He looked up to see Hunter skip back towards him. "Yeah, I mean if no one's taken our seat yet," he chuckled, running a hand through his hair again. Her words didn't exactly reassure him. The man was more wary than ever; maybe she was a hunter. It was literally in her name too. Befriending hunters was one thing Hywel really didn't do. It was never a good idea. The man felt more wary of her than ever, though it didn't appear on his expression.

Hunter
Once back at their strangely still free table, Hunter scanned the menu and settled on some tasty sounding appetizers. To wash everything down she chose a cola and then studied the club with avid interest.
"This is a great place," she told Hywel, "I guess I must have missed it in all of my travels out hunting for places to see. I really haven't had much time for anything other than setting up the store and finding food."
Her huge apartment was embarrassingly short of furniture and decoration. So far she hadn't spent much time in it, except to sleep. It wasn't due to a lack of money. Her inheritance took care of that. She simply hadn't had the time.
"I hope I can get a helper at the store so I can get out and do some sightseeing," she told him, "I also need to get some furniture for my place.
"I'll have to close the store tomorrow to go to the pet store. I guess I'll have to take my mini van. I'll need a rather large dog bed, some bowls, toys and food for the big guy."
She placed her palm down on the table, "Would you like to come along? I'm sure that little fur cutie you've got would love to see some of the cat toys?"

He was glad that the table was still open, and from the wink Jamie gave him, it was clear the other man had kept it open for them. Ordering the food was a quick affair, and he simply mentioned to the man to add his usual order to the list, before turning his attention back to Hunter. She was a strange person. Clearly not from the city, and clearly not as simple as she appeared. If anything, he wouldn't have given her a second look. However, now that he had learned a few things about her, it certainly piqued his interest.
The man smiled at her words. "Thanks, it took a while to renovate it back in the day; it used to be an old pub but we modernized it after a while. You kind of have to stay on top of things to do well in this city. Speaking of, you're not from here, are you?"
He peered curiously at her, as if there was something to figure out about this woman. "Not trying to be rude or anything, but you seem like you're from out of town. New Yorkers aren't usually very friendly, and they're not all that trusting of strangers either."
Ah, the book shop he had yet to enter. He wondered what kind of books she'd sell. He made a note to himself to check it out sometime. He nodded as she talked about going to the pet store, and he raised a brow when she asked him to come along. Frankly, he wasn't all too fond of that dog of hers, and more wary of it than anything. Spending time with a hellhound like that didn't sound like a good self-preservation tactic.
He gave her an apologetic smile. "To be honest, Sylvan isn't my cat," he replied with a quiet laugh, "he's my sister's. Guess he crawled in when I left her apartment earlier, so I probably have to bring him back later tonight. She's very...attached to him, you know?" He knew how Rhiannon got when Sylvan decided to sneak out and go on his own adventure. Despite being her familiar, the two were often at odds, snarking at each other whenever they could. It was funny, even if he didn't understand a single bit of it.
It was moments like this when he missed being a warlock. He no longer had the ability to understand familiars, even with the blood magic that Rhiannon had used when trying to make the two of them immortal.

Hunter
She grinned over her cola.
"So.... you figured out that I'm not a native New Yorker?"
Hunter took her sip and continued, "I'm from Fort Scott, Kansas. In the suburbs."
She laughed.
"Actually, you could call Fort Scott outside of the suburbs. It's a little town with some great Victorian houses. Storm and I lived in one. Storm still lives there in fact."
She looked wistful.
"The whole town was like one big family. I miss that."
Hunter looked into the bottom of her glass and swirled her drink, "I must have been an idiot to leave, but there really wasn't much there for me.
"The best I could hope for was maybe to marry a nice guy and have a family, but I wanted more than that. I want to see things that aren't small town and have some excitement in my life. The most exciting thing to do in Fort Scott is go out hunting."
She looked fondly at Sylvan, "He sure seems to like you and cats are rather picky as to who they choose as friends. He might like some cat treats. If you like I can pick some up for you when I'm at the pet store? Unless of course, you'd like to come along?"
What exciting dates you plan, scoffed her inner voice. First a trip to visit Mrs. Wittershall and now a trip to a pet store! You are just a mad fool for fun!

He chuckled. "Yeah, I grew up here and you kind of get to know how people act," he shrugged. He wasn't exactly lying; living here on and off for the last hundred years meant he could quickly discern whether someone had been born here or lived here for years, versus someone brand new. It wasn't even an accent thing anymore; the New York accent was dying out these days.
"Really?" he replied, intrigued. The city was so quickly changing he barely remembered how Victorian homes looked like these days; his memories of the past were rather short-lived and hazy, after all. The city had always been his neighborhood more so than the village he had come from.
"I get it," he replied with a smile, "the community is hard to find but sometimes it feels stifling too. I guess anywhere feels like that if you've been there long enough, huh?" They had moved to a small town once, a few years back, in order to find some interesting gateway to a certain magical power, but that town was so small, and everyone knew each other. He had never felt more an outsider than there.
He chuckled as Hunter chatted about the kitten who was now curled up, purring on the table. "Yeah, he's a picky one that's for sure, but I can check my schedule and get back to you." Ah, the waiter finally arrived with their snacks and drinks, and he leaned back a little to give the man some space to put their food in front of them.
"I mean, I might as well give you my number, you know, if you ever need help or if you're around or something. Better to have friends around the city if you're new," he replied. Better to keep an eye out on any potential threats too, he thought, and that meant keeping friends close and other supernatural involvement even closer.

Hunter
Hunter was thrilled at the prospect of finding her second friend in the city. While she counted Mrs. Wittershall as her first, she really had nothing but books in common with the older lady. Mrs. Wittershall never left her apartment, which made her a terrible shopping and clubbing buddy. Perhaps Hywel..... ?
Well, things would come in their own good time. She hauled out her cell phone and tapped in her address book.
"Okay," she said, "I'm ready. Shoot!"
As she added his number to her rather tiny list, she said, "Thanks! Here's mine, both of them. The first one's this cell phone, the second one is the store's.
"You're more than welcome to come over and bring friends," she told him, "You can just sit and read, or if you'd rather read at home, you can borrow the books. Believe it or not, I do actually sell the odd book. I also buy books people no longer want and resell them."
She furrowed her brow, "In fact a few days ago, a woman brought in some really old books. Nice books. Bound in leather. I don't know how many people will be interested in them though. They were all in some sort of weird language."
Those nachos were delicious, so Hunter scarfed down another one.
She gave him a grateful smile, as honest and innocent as her heart and soul.
"I really have to thank you for being so kind to me."
She reached out to stroke the sleeping kitten.
"Despite how boring it was, I really miss the closeness of friends and family. Even when I went off to school, I was too busy studying to get out much or to make many friends.
"I'd really like to make this place my home."

He chuckled as he recited his number, glancing to her phone to make sure she entered it right. Yep, that was fine. He quickly handed his own phone to her before entering her name. Hunter - book girl. He'd never admit it but his memory was a bit sketchy sometimes, having lived for so many decades. These days, phones and all helped, but it always worked better to keep track with extra notes and stuff.
Interesting. Books in a weird language huh? His interest was immediately piqued. "Books in a weird language?" he leaned forward a little, "did you know what kind of language it was? There aren't a lot of foreign book stores in the city." Old books in another language were always mildly interesting; Hywel wasn't a collector of any sorts, but he knew Rhiannon was. "I think my sister likes this kind of stuff, so maybe I'll tell her about it."
He smiled at her words, expression softening a little. "I get that, cities are a bit big and lonely compared to a small town innit?" he shrugged, "but you live here long enough and you get used to it. Different neighborhoods still have their own communities, you know? I grew up in Brooklyn years ago, but it's changed a lot since, but I remember back then we had our own Irish community too. It was chaotic, but...kind of nice back then. It's all different now but I miss it too."

Hunter "I had to bring up my younger brother," she laughed, "By myself. I really understand chaotic!" She thought for a moment as she selected another delightful appetizer from the tray. Those books had given her a creepy feeling, but every book had a reason for being here. Some one was bound to want them. Hunter tapped her swizzle stick on the table as she chewed and swallowed the crunchy tidbit. "I'm no expert in linguistics, but it isn't in any current language. At college, I saw a lot of foreign students and I'm ashamed to admit it, I peeked at their notes. "Great lot of good it did me. I couldn't read a word. I saw lots of strange looking letters though." She gave Hywel a thoughtful look, "If your sister wants to come and see them, I'd be much obliged. I'd love to know what language they're in. "They're full of symbols, strange ones. The text resembles cuneiform, but what kind is a mystery to me." As she reached for another appetizer, she added, "These things are amazing! If I ever get a stove, I'll have to give this stuff a try!" With a guilty grin to Hywel she continued, "Your chef probably wouldn't give out his recipe, I bet!"
