A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

Lycari
"Gosh, I hope so," Lycari commented. He was busily opening cupboards and drawers, just to see what was in them. He found a couple of light plastic plates with Corelle stamped on the bottom of them. There were no pots, but one of the drawers held a few spoons and a few forks. No knives though.
With a grin, he held up a fork, slightly bent but still serviceable, "Hey! Cutlery!"
He led the way out of the room and wandered down the hall. Sure enough, at the very end there were two bathrooms; one marked men and the other sign said women.
"Well, that was easy enough."
He took a quick peek inside. Yep, there was a good sized shower, a sink and a toilet as well as a urinal. He'd seen quite a few garage station bathrooms, which often held everything but the shower. There were no towels.
"I might need to go shopping as soon as I get a job," he told Emeline, "I'm short a few things. Guess I'm gonna have to drip dry for a while."
Behind many of the doors he could hear people. One actually had a radio. As they passed, one door opened and a girl barged out. She wasn't looking around, her attention seemed to be held by someone else still inside her room. She ran right into the shifter.
"Ooops, sorr---" she bounced off him and looked up.
At six foot two, Lycari wasn't a small man and he was solid muscle. He caught her before she fell over. The girl came to his shoulder. She sort of looked a little stunned as her face flushed.
"Sorry," she mumbled, as he helped her to regain her balance.
With a lopsided grin, Lycari answered, "It's okay. No harm done."
In a few strides he was back at his door, with Emeline. Out came the key again and he pushed the door open.
As he stepped inside, he turned to Emeline and asked, "May I come by your store tomorrow? Could you give me a few tips on jobs?
"I guess the rest of this," as he spoke, he drew a few dollars out of a jeans pocket, "Will be needed for a newspaper."

She watched him bounce around like an excited child. Everything seemed so new to him, and it almost put a smile on her face. There was once when she had gone on a rare vacation with her family, when she had been the same, and seeing him like that felt almost nostalgic.
Emeline did notice that there was a lack of personal care items. She'd have to note to get him to a Walgreens or something, to get some basic stuff before she left. It was weird, having to explain things to someone as if he had never been to a city before, but it reframed the way she thought of things, that was for sure.
He was already rushing out of the door when she looked up again, and she followed, about to suggest that they stop by walgreens before he settled, when he crashed into the girl. Oh, right. She should've warned that there were probably others around too. She let out a sigh of relief when everything turned out ok.
"Oh, yeah sure," she spoke as Lycari asked his questions, "I was kind of going to suggest that...maybe you'd like to go to Walgreens or something? CVS maybe? You look like you need some towels and shit, might be good to take a look, you know, if you need soap or toothbrushes or something like that too."
She shook her head as he grabbed his money. "Don't bother," she laughed lightly, "you can get them free sometimes if you go on the metro, they have newspaper stands for free there. Or if you look at electronic shops, they usually have the TVs on the news channels too."

Lycari
Lycari listened intently. He was a rank amateur at cities. He had managed to filch some deodorant and a toothbrush from one of the motels he managed to stay at. The toothbrush was a wonderful thing, he'd decided. Much better than the feathered twigs he'd used at home. He decided that if he ever got to go home, he'd have to buy about a hundred or so toothbrushes for his tribe. They'd love them! His people never grew beards or moustaches, so he'd never had the opportunity to shave.
"Is this Walgreens a place to buy these things?" He asked, "If so, then maybe I should, providing that they're cheap. I can get better stuff when I'm getting a paycheque.
"Obviously, I'm not going to be able to gallop around in the hall starkers."
He gave her a lopsided grin.
"Not that that sort of thing matters at home."

She laughed a little. "Yeah, probably not a great idea to do that here, they might report you and kick you out for indecent exposure or something stupid like that," she replied with a grimace. Now that didn't seem fun at all. She didn't really know what the man's price range was. What seemed cheap to her was probably expensive for others, especially those who had never been to the city.
"Mm," she hummed thoughtfully, "let's see for ourselves first. I don't really know what's expensive or not these days, but everything's usually priced a bit higher in the city. New York's a pricey place to be."

Lycari
The shifter dumped his back pack out on one of the beds. It was probably the largest pack his tribe had possessed, made especially for long hunting trips and all of the accessories needed for a stay in the wild. Onto the bed there rolled some raggle taggle clothes, a large hunting knife, a lighter, some bottles of healing ointment, his toothbrush and deodorant, more rope, another pair of mismatched sneakers and other sundries. In amongst the pile there appeared the odd coin and some paper bills. Lycari rooted all of his hard earned cash out of the mess.
He sat down on the creaking bed and sorted his money.
"Let's see," he mumbled, "Five dollars, sixteen silver ones, a bunch of little brown ones and some big brown ones...
"Hey, two twenties!" His handsome face lit up, "These must have been in the bottom.
"Also I've got some of these really pretty ones," he dug out a whack of Canadian money, "Everyone in the tribe pitched in and gave me what they had."
He flashed a wad of brightly colored Canadian bills at Emeline. All in all, while he had little American money, he had a significant pile of Canadian paper, at a quick glance it looked like it might just total a couple of thousand dollars.
"Can I use this?" He asked.

She leaned on the other side of the bed as she watched him unpack. He wasn't completely broke at least. There was enough money for some food for the next day, and well, there were definitely more Canadian dollars than American ones.
"You can exchange them," she offered, "there's a cash exchange point closer to the city, but if they charge more than 0.8 for the exchange rate, they're trying to rip you off. I'd tell you to open a bank account but I don't know if you have the papers to."
She bit her lip. "Well hopefully the job works out and you might be able to find some roomshare deals online. It'll help you get all the bank stuff done."

Lycari
"My Uncle Kal said that most banks'll give you a good rate on foreign exchange," the shifter said, "But that's in Canada. He never got far enough south to hit the States."
He stuffed everything but the money back into his pack, then he leaned back onto the headboard.
"Is there a park closer than the one I was in earlier?" He asked. "This dog would like to go for a bit of a run and then hit the hay."
With an impish grin, he added, "I want to get an early start on the job stuff in the morning, but after this afternoon's little nap, I'm not exactly tired."
He reached back into his seemingly bottomless pack and pulled out a bedraggled tennis ball.
"I found this in the last park I was in. It may sound silly, but as a wolf, I love a good game of fetch. And if you're throwing this ball for me, at least Animal Control won't be on my case."
Looking at Emeline, he nonchalantly tossed the ball into the air, caught it with one hand and chuckled.
"Just a nice lady out with her puppy dog?"

She shrugged. Of course the banks were the best choice but if the man didn't have an existing account... "You sort of need a passport and a proof of address to open a bank account," she frowned, "I don't know if you'll be able to exchange money there if you don't have one. I mean, you can try, I just know that if you don't want anyone to ask too many questions especially about how you don't really...I dunno, know about modern-day references and shit...it might not be a good idea."
There were people who were far too knowledgeable about their kind out there, she knew. There were even rumours that there were people, scientists, who would test things on them. She didn't know if it was true or not.
Emeline pondered over his request. "I–" she wanted to make an excuse to go back home if she was honest. It had been a long day and frankly, a lot to process but part of her felt uncomfortable leaving this guy alone. There were so many things that could go wrong.
She sighed. "I'll give you half an hour," she shrugged, "but I'll have to go after that. I think my flatmate's probably freaking out about where I am now."

Lycari
"If you're worried about your mate, then go on ahead home," Lycari noted, "I've taken up way more of your time than I should."
He tossed the ball into the air a few times, watching it pop up into the air and land back in his hand.
"I can go for a jog or something," he said, "I'll do one of those around the block things. At least I'll get to know the area a little bit better.
"I can take care of myself, but I will drop by tomorrow so you can tell me how to get to these places I should go to," he continued, "You know, for towels and stuff. I shouldn't think that I can monopolize your time like I have."
He palmed the ball, "Thanks again."
The shifter didn't want to seem overly needy, but he sure missed the companionship his tribe had offered. In fact, in years past he had actually cursed it and now he wondered why. You couldn't go anywhere without someone knowing where you were, even if you hadn't told them. It made his teenage years an absolute horror.
Well, those days were gone for him now.

To be honest, Emeline was almost a bit grateful for the 'out' the other man gave her. It wasn't that she didn't want to spend time with him, but she was exhausted, running on leftover adrenaline from that afternoon. It was late, and all she could think of was crashing on her bed and wiping out. There was just a lot to process.
"I'll walk you there?" she suggested, "but then I probably need to get going. The train's a nightmare later on in the night if I'm honest."
It took her a moment to realize that she had no way of contacting the other man. Did he have a phone? She doubted it. "I'm not working tomorrow," she bit her lip, "is there any way I can contact you? You don't happen to have a phone, do you?" Even a burner phone would make sense, and well, he'd need one, though even the wad of Canadian dollars might not be enough to get him one. "You'll probably need one, especially if you're getting a job...some of the second-hand shops might sell cheap ones?"
She pondered for a moment. "How about I come over tomorrow morning or something? I can make it for 10, and...catch you up on a bunch of stuff about the city. Least I can do." She did owe him one for saving her life, and well, if he was going to get a job, he'd need an email. Also maybe a bank account. Not having a permanent address was going to be a bummer though, unless they paid in cash...
Well, she was recommending him and maybe the boss would be flexible; according to the friend, he was pretty accomodating, at least. If not...well, there were other jobs around the city, but he'd need to catch up on how technology worked these days. She could tell he picked up things fast, but the city was ruthless about eating people up and spitting them out.

Lycari
"No, no," Lycari shook his head and waved a dismissive hand, "You go home and get some rest. I promise I won't get into any trouble. How could I if all I'm doing is jogging?"
He gave her an understanding smile. She'd been through a lot this afternoon and she'd handled them all with great aplomb, even to dealing with him, a stranger.
"I understand that there are cell phones down here? I should probably get one, along with the towels and stuff."
He rose to see her to the door.
"Come over any time tomorrow morning. I'll stick around until you get here.
"And thank you for the help. I owe you."
He looked so sincere about this and he was. His upbringing demanded it.

She nodded. He'd be able to handle himself for a little while at least.
"Yeah, you'll probably need one," she admitted, pointing in the direction of the closest convenience store, "they might have some, but if you don't have enough cash, I'm sure I have an old one somewhere, you know, if I haven't donated it for scraps yet."
She gave him a small smile. "I'll see you tomorrow then." She gave the man a wave before exiting the room.
