A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

Of course, Rhiannon could sort of guess that from him. He had seemed so reluctant to talk to her at first; he didn't seem like the usual sort of guys who'd give any excuse to chat with a pretty girl or anything. She had to admit; the man was quite handsome himself, and she wouldn't be surprised if he had a pretty high standard for his 'cute girls to flirt with' list.
"So what do you do when you're not winning over ladies' hearts?" she hummed. From the looks of his outfit, he seemed like a banker, but to be honest, she couldn't quite see it. She couldn't pin it down exactly, but the way he moved seemed too controlled, sophisticated, as if there was something setting him apart from the others. She could see how one would be intimidated, large man like him with the looks and that sharp expression on his face–she knew there was something intriguing but she couldn't quite pinpoint it.
"That sounds like fun," she shrugged, "heard there's a decent food stall by the park nearby."

In thought.
Maddox slipped his hands into his pant pockets as their feet started to move in motion. "Oh, I don't think you'd be that interested, I eat, work, sleeeI'm just a regular old employee of the people, a government worker." He shrugged. Another vague answer, but seemingly appropriate. Even if people thought he worked a cool job, it wasn't in him to flaunt his badge around. "But what about you? What do you do in your free time?"
Besides chatting up strangers, he didn't really know what to expect from her, it was this feeling that kept him on his toes. He couldn't quite put his finger on why something about her caused him to feel this way, but more often than not his gut was pretty spot on.
"Hm, I was thinking of passing by that food stall in the park, you know counteract the alcohol a little bit." Not that he felt any kind of buzz at all. But it was to keep the small talk moving along without her trying to figure him out. "Is that alright with you?"

She rolled her eyes. "I'm just trying to small talk, you know, gauge what kind of person I'm going off on a walk with," she laughed, "trust me, I'm not scouting you for my new beau or trying to gold dig or anything." Government worker didn't say much, and while she loved a mysterious dark well-dressed man, she was genuinely curious about who he was.
"I'm boring," she chuckled, "I work in property management. Nothing new." It wasn't exactly a lie; most of their money came from having bought up a lot of their neighborhood back in the early 90s; the perks of living for over a hundred years was that you buy anything back then and it was well worth more than its weight in gold these days. "But you know, I like reading weird books and watching documentaries I guess. Used to be really into science and all, so you know, not exactly blowing things up but...those science kits you get, to make random shit? Yeah, that's always fun."
It wasn't quite a lie; experimenting with potions and spells was really what she spent a lot of time on, as well as investigating cases around New York–she was rather good at being a private investigator too. Her hobby of getting into odd jobs and places helped her stay relatively unknown in the city, and that was how they liked to keep it.
"Yeah sure," she shrugged, "I can probably use a hotdog myself."

His eyes glittered in the dim light, amused by her eagerness to figure him out. "Whatever you say." He chuckled, "Oh, you don't appreciate my character for you? A man of mystery, I thought you'd quite enjoy the allure in figuring me out." He said. It was obvious he wasn't very serious, teasing her for the time being as the pair walk side by side. Enjoying the light banter between each other, he had to admit he was finding her company more enjoyable than he'd previously thought he would.
"Property management?" He echoed her words in a curious tone. Eyes sweeping over her in a quick glance, guess that would explain a few things. A girl who ran things, would definitely walk with a certain confidence. Of course the rest of what he heard seemed to fit in her as well. "Somehow none of that surprises me, it just seems to fit your essence." Maybe she was one of those old soul type of girls. "Can't say I related to everything, but slight of hand used to be my hobby back in the day."
He didn't have much time for a bobby with work, but he could still pick a lock any day of the week. He was more surprised to hear that she was interested in a hotdog. "Really? I didn't peg you for the messy food type." He chuckled.

She laughed. "Oh trust me, I do love a good mystery," her expression was sly, mischievous, "but let's just say I like it more when the mystery is on my part. I guess I just get a little impatient. Situations are easier when you have at least some idea of what you're going into, right?"
Her expression seemed almost innocent if it wasn't for the gleam in her eyes. "You know how it is, girls gotta scout ahead, just in case we get ourselves into dangerous situations." She adjusted her purse. Property management was just an excuse for not doing much. It was mostly just paperwork. "I'm not sure what essence that means," she smirked, "you know, a lot of people call New York real estate crooks and all."
Slight of hand, huh? "So card tricks?" she grinned, giving him a look over, not quite sure if he was joking or not, "I guess that adds to your little mystery bubble. "Perform anywhere? Magic shows? Birthday parties? Doesn't exactly, what do you say...fit your essence."
As they continued onwards, she glanced towards the shops and restaurants they were passing, many beginning to shut for the night. "Yeah well, I wasn't always living the high life," she replied, "used to be one of those scrappy kids from the neighborhoods you avoid; you kind of learn to love any kind of food. Guess you never really lose a taste for a cheap hotdog, you know?" She didn't really care about the whole 'don't eat anything saucy for a first date' kind of thing. She wasn't here to impress the man, after all.
