A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

Ash wasn't sure if he was explicitly invited to this party or not, but at this age, he didn't care. Sixteen was the age of no worries, of learning to drive and experimenting with whatever the fuck was out there. It was the age of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, so the house party was definitely on his list. He didn't exactly know Stacy, only that she was a senior, and hanging out with the seniors was definitely something only the cool kids did. She was rich, she had friends everywhere, and her daddy probably owned half of Brooklyn or something, at least from what he heard.
Oh yeah, and she threw the craziest parties.
Her parents weren't home and they owned another apartment by the Riverside Park, so whatever garden party it was, he knew it was going to be wild. Of course, he only knew one person who'd be invited. Emeline was in the same math class as Stacy, which meant they were both invited. Which meant Ash was hanging around, despite Lance being an absolute dick about it. Oh, and of course Lance was invited. He was one of the few guys who were legal and old enough to buy alcohol.
The two boys not getting along wasn't anything new; Ash had never liked him, but he had been friends with Eme since they were in middle school when he accidentally spilled something all over her jacket, and well, fate decided they were friends so Ash never really questioned it. Still, he kept his mouth shut, despite how badly he wanted to punch the other man in the face for literally everything he did.
Arriving at the apartment, it was the average scene of a house party, except fancier than any he had seen in years. Open patios, kegs and bottles of alcohol around the fancy marble counter, and the amount of people...he wasn't even sure they all went to his school. He could spot a few familiar faces, a few classmates here and there who he waved excitedly at, but there were definitely loads of people he wasn't sure about. He wondered why his brother wouldn't come.
It still didn't matter to him. Lance was setting up the keg and Ash tried to drag Emeline away to the drinks table, eager to start the party.

Being eighteen, he was one of the older guys at the party and actually knew Stacy well. They had a little fling a few months back that didn't last long, but that fling had granted him invitations to all her parties. He was on his own and didn't have the funds to do these things so he mooched off of her wealth every once in a blue moon to get drunk or high. They were friends, they had each other's backs. He wasn't in school for several years of his life, on the run and living on the streets. Now he was finishing the last bit of his senior year, with hardly any friends and no real roots. He was confused and didn't quite know what to do half the time.
Joss was having a conversation with some of the party-goers, Stacy's newest boyfriend to be exact, as he leaned up against the counters in the kitchen while sipping on a beer. He feigned laughter as the other man spoke, nodding like he was truly paying attention. That couldn't be further from the truth as his mind wandered everywhere else. Should I have worn a jacket? It's kinda chilly in here. Shit, my sock is slipping down in my shoe. He leaned forward and fixed his issue before patting the guy on the back and walking away, mid-conversation. He didn't mean to be rude, he just genuinely wasn't interested. He had to have guessed that by now by Joss's lack of appropriate response to anything he was talking about. Oh well.
He was wearing a simple grey t-shirt, black jeans, and high-top sneakers. It was his usual attire and tonight was no different. He strode out onto the patio and tossed his bottle into the large trash can just outside the door, already fairly tipsy. He opened one of the many ice chests that were slid under the drink table and began rummaging around for what he wanted, digging his hands down into the ice for coldest ones. He was a man of simple tastes, and while he didn't dislike the fancier drinks on display on the tables, he wanted to get trashed, and these would do the job just fine.
Finally satisfied with his pick, he popped the cap off and spun around, ready to jump back into the fray when he came face-to-face with a younger curly-haired boy and one of Stacy's friends that he recognized. He had seen her a few times but didn't bother to know her name or anything else about her.

There were plenty of drinks around, and anyone who knew Ash knew that free-for-all drinks and the hyperactive boy was not a great mix. Still, a party like this? There was really no one stopping him. He was dragging Emeline's arm over to the drinks despite Lance's protest. Frankly, if he could start the party without seeing that ugly face, he'd be plenty happier.
"What do you want?" he called out to the other girl, "they have Bud Light...Bombay gin...eugh, King Roberts," he made a face when he spotted the cheap vodka; he had thrown up enough times thanks to that, "uhh, there's cheap wine–?"
"I'll just get a vodka cranberry," Emeline shrugged, moving through the crowd of teenagers to make her own drink. Ash shrugged, only grabbing a 4loko. The other girl glanced at his drink, before shooting him with a glare.
"Oh hell no," she snorted, grabbing it out of his hands, "you are not having that."
Ash gave her a pout. "Why not?" he exclaimed, "it's a fucking party Eme, you get to have fun kissing your gross boyfriend why can't I have fun going off the walls? I never get to do that anyway."
She rolled her eyes. "Because I'll end up having to apologize for bringing a sophomore to the party and have to take you home?" she growled, "and not to mention, Lance is going to be mad if he has to leave early to get you home."
He frowned. "Fuck your stupid boyfriend," he snorted, before grabbing the bottle of gin, pouring himself a gin and tonic that was in fact, mostly gin, before sticking his tongue out at the girl and heading elsewhere to the party. God, ever since she had started dating that asshole, she had been a lot less fun–
Oof! He didn't realize he had walked into someone. A taller boy he had never seen. "Oh shit," he held his drink up, having spilled some of it now. He immediately switched hands to lick at the spilled drink on his hand. He glanced up again.
"Shit sorry," he laughed off his mistake, "didn't see you just now." He furrowed his brow. "D'ya go to Kennedy High? I swear I've never seen you before but maybe I just don't pay attention." He wasn't even sure if everyone here was in the same school; people knew people who knew people after all, and even Lance wasn't from their school. He was the kind of kid who'd talk a mile a minute, even without the drink. He took a sip of his, wrinkling his nose slightly at how strong the gin was. "Have you gotten a drink yet?"
