A city that never sleeps
The world isn't as it seems, and New Yorkers certainly know that well. While the element Asterium is not widely understood, those in the city's underground know better. For millenia, humans have known of this energy. They called those born with it in their bones changelings and mutants. Legends have told of werewolves and vampires for centuries. Those who can harness it became witches and warlocks. All they know now is that some things are better kept secret, and where else can you hide a secret better than New York City?

Lycari
"I guess I need the ID first, because none of the rest of it's gonna happen until I can prove I'm me.
"Is an ID dependant on having an address? I mean the landlord won't want to rent to me if I can't prove I'm me, but he'll also be interested in where the money's gonna come from, so I need that job. But to get a job I need the ID."
Lycari rubbed at his temple. It was frustrating, sort of like contemplating which came first, the chicken or the egg. Then he brightened.
"What about a post office box? Would that classify as an address? Maybe all I need for one of those is an ID."
When the waitress brought their brunch, the shifter had to control himself and keep from pouncing on his sandwich. After one bite, his eyes nearly rolled up into his head. It was simply the best! It hadn't occurred to him while he was travelling that he might need more carbs. A wolf eats mainly meat, with the odd bug or plant thrown in for variety. He'd had some great meals while he worked on the farms, but those jobs had been well over a couple of weeks ago. The sandwich tasted like manna from the gods. It didn't take him long to down his sandwich and to start in on his glass of iced tea. It too was earning a spot on his hit list.
"I may not be the best judge of this, but perhaps the ID is my first step. That and getting some towels, since I'm not supposed to be waltzing around in the buff after my shower."
A smile tugged at his lips, "That blanket was itchy."

He had a lot of questions that she wasn't even sure herself. Emeline bit her lip, before giving him an apologetic look. "To be honest, I don't even know, you might have to search that up online," she frowned. She had moved here when she was young, and of course, heard stories from the other kids from her neighborhood back then, but the immigration process was foreign to her. Back then, her parents had handled everything.
She gave the waitress a grateful smile when she brought the food, and now that she could actually smell the french toast, her stomach was rumbling. It was delicious as always, and frankly, the best place for french toast in her opinion. No one else put honeycomb crunch in their french toast and that honestly elevated it to a whole other level. She almost chuckled watching the other man eat; he seemed to enjoy his food all the same.
"Yeah, it probably is," she sighed, before glancing to her phone and opening her messages. Huh, Ash had replied.
'Yeah Jason knows a guy, said he's okay to meet whenever. Here's his number, but apparently he's a bit prickly and he's $$$$ so'
She glanced up to Lycari. "I think we got a guy," she had a tentative smile on her face.

Lycari
Careful as to not trip any pedestrian traffic, Lycari stretched out his long legs and downed more lemonade. When Emeline told him the good news, he straightened up and smiled back at her.
"Can we call him now?" Lycari asked eagerly. "I guess one of the things I'll need as a brand new New Yorker is one of those phones, but first things first.
"I sure hope he's not charging more money than I've got on me right now. That'd be a real disappointment."
His chances of continuing his search and being somewhat comfortable while doing it were beginning to come true. He still needed to meet with the local shifters. They'd be the best source of information about his people.
But first, the ID!

She nodded, already typing out a text to the man. "On it," she muttered as she sent off a text, requesting to meet. It only took a few moments for the man to read the text, and a few more moments after that. The address and a codeword.
"Yeah, he said to go to this place, let me find it on the map," she muttered, as she clicked the address link. Twenty minute by train. Not bad.
She took a bite of her toast, before looking up to Lycari. "So it's not too far, but we'll have to get on the metro for it. Have you been on a train yet?" If he reacted this badly to being in a lift, she wondered if he had gone on the metro before.

Lycari
With a quizzical look, Lycari asked, "What's a metro? If it's like a train, I've seen them but not ridden one."
Life in New York was full of surprises for a guy like him. First, that elevator thing, which he chose not to use if possible. There was something about being in a little box that went up and down that just didnt't sit right with him. Buses, cars, tractors and heavy equipment were things he had little experience with. Ski-Doos and sleds, they were different.
He thought a train would be kind of fun. It would be nice to see the scenery go by. He looked forward to this little trip.

"It's like...an underground train I guess?" she mused, "I mean it goes above ground once you're out of Manhattan, so it won't be completely in the dark, but maybe the first half definitely will be."
They were still around Midtown, which meant that if they had to get to the location, they'd have to get out towards one of the other boroughs. She turned to Lycari. "It's not really...pleasant, if I may say so myself, but it's the quickest way to leave the city, you know? Like, just don't talk to anyone, don't mind if people push into you because it definitely gets busy sometimes, and just...don't touch anything if you don't know what it is."
The metro was definitely not a plus point for the city but hey, it was part of life. She took another bite of her toast.
"So what kind of jobs did you have before? At farms right? Like, other than you know, your shifting thing, is there any work experience or something you could talk about in an interview?"
She might as well prepare him for what was coming, right?

Lycari
"Well, most of it's been manual labor, like feeding the stock, cleaning barns, milking -- and let me tell you that's fun when the cows aren't sure if you're a wolf or not," he listed, "I've thrown hay around, driven tractors and small trucks.
"Up north, I've made arrows, bows, spears, done flint knapping, repaired leather harness."
He looked at her watching for a frown or two when he went on with, "I've hunted and prepared carcasses. I've also taken parties out on hunts and taught wilderness survival."
"Not too useful for the city is it?"

She bit her lip. "I mean you could be a forest ranger if that was a job in the city," she chuckled a little, before sighing, "yeah unfortunately I don't really know how that'd be useful...unless you were some kind of actor or something, but those kinda jobs...you know, teaching people how to live out in the wild...don't really exist here much."
"I mean I told you about the job I thought might work, right?" she hummed, taking another bite out of her meal, "a bodyguard...I mean, I don't know if they need a resume but they might hire you on looks alone. You can look pretty intimidating I think...since you're so tall."
She personally wasn't intimidated but that was just because she sort of knew what kind of person he was. In the right situation...well, she could see it being different.
"Still might be good to have a resume though," she sighed.

Lycari
"That's sort of why I thought the zoo might be a good fit for me. Mucking out animals is no problem for me. I am one."
He laughed softly.
"Let's take care of the ID part first, then I can go and see about that job you had in mind for me. If they need a resume, then I can take care of that this evening."
He looked sober and thoughtful.
"What's a resume? Is it like a list of jobs you've done before?"
Lycari was learning quite a bit about living in the city. While back home was a hard life, cities seemed to have their own difficulties. He wasn't worried though. If worst came to worst, he could hide out as a wolf. In fact a couple came by walking a large black dog. This time the dog sniffed in Lycari's direction and timidly made its way to the opposite side of its people. The couple must have been used to this, as the man holding the leash simply changed hands and they kept on going.
The shifter pointed at the trio.
"I could do that, no problems. Not hide, but walk on a leash. I've pulled sleds, you know," he grinned, "I wasn't only a guide. I was part of the transportation team sometimes."

She smiled at that. "Bronx has a zoo," she sighed, "they might not be as strict as Central Park. Still not sure they actually hire anyone though, but we can always try." She didn't really know what to say; there were so many aspects of the city that were just difficult to explain to someone who had never been in one. Everything seemed simple at the start but things rarely were.
"Yeah, something like that," she nodded, "it's just a short list of your experience and what you can do. People can be pretty strict about it but like, I guess a lot of people probably start off without a lot of experience...I'm sure it'll be fine."
Quickly dusting off the last of her toast, she waved the waitress over to settle the bill. "I mean, interviews are still what people use to vet their workers I guess?" she offered, "so like...they'll probably ask you what experience you have and what makes you a good fit for the job. Do you know how you'll answer that? Without mentioning that you're a shapeshifter or something though; people won't take you seriously if you say that...I think."
For all she knew, most people in the city were clueless to what really happened out there.

Lycari
The shifter grabbed the bill and paid. The waitress brought over a little bag with his egg sandwich in it for later. As they left, he took a good look at the area and the sign, memorizing it for later. He'd definitely come back here.
"Maybe I could say I grew up on an off the grid commune? I mean, I sorta did."
He thought hard about what kind of city type work experience he had, which was none, but some of his jobs did have some bearing on available hirings. He could be a bouncer at a club. Mucking out pens at a zoo would be a cinch. Just about anything physical would be easy. He wasn't adverse to learning new things either.
Soon they arrived at a set of stairs that led down into a smelly, noisy concrete hole. Lycari put two and two together and came up with underground train. He set his shoulders and followed Emeline down the stairs. His inner wolf had some serious misgivings about this, but he fought them down. People in the city did this every day. Most of them were fine.
Although he was holding it together rather well, Lycari's wariness showed up in his next question.
"Um... has anyone ever died on one of these things?"

Hm, that wasn't a bad excuse. "That's...actually a pretty good excuse," she chuckled, "if we can still get you that ID, you can tell them that...though you know, people still ask a lot of questions. Especially if they're trying to know you more, you know? It's just not really super safe to tell them the truth."
It seemed like everything came down to getting that ID really. The sooner the better, Emeline thought, as she quickly grabbed her bag, already heading to the train station. She occasionally glanced to Lycari, wondering how he'd react to it. For someone who had never been in a city, much less one like New York, it must all be...overwhelming. Some days, even she felt claustrophobic in this place, and she had lived here pretty much her whole life.
His question made her think. "Mm..." she didn't want to scare him, but he'd find out sooner or later, "yeah...but a lot of the time it's just...people slipping into the tracks." She grimaced at that statement. "It's not pretty but like...I guess we haven't had a train accident or a derailing in a while. It doesn't happen often, I promise."

Lycari
The shifter looked a little sick at her explanation, but since he knew he was pretty good on his balance and agility, he really didn't have any fear of falling onto the tracks. Now derailment on the other hand....
"Well, okay," he nodded, "But the first sign of it jumping the tracks you and I are outta there!"
Once underground and at railside, Lycari had a good look around. Sounds echoed and gave him a slight case of conniptions, but he learned to ignore this quickly. It really wasn't too crowded, but since they were going out of the business district, he imagined that it would be hellish at dinner hour. The station was tiled everywhere and Lycari glumly thought that this was because of the relative ease of wiping the blood from it when someone got themselves squashed by a train. The tracks themselves were sunk into a long pit that entered at one end and exited at the other. He stood well back from the edge. Down one end of the cave was a red light and the other had a green one. In the distance he could hear something trainlike heading their way.
"It's coming," he noted to Emeline.
The front of the train pulled around a curve in the tracks and sped towards them. People behind them stepped forward eagerly, but Lycari didn't move no matter how much others pushed. When the train glided to a stop with its doors right in front of him and Emeline, he waited. With a whoosh, two doors slid open.
'So far, so good,' Lycari thought to himself as Emeline led him on.
"I guess we wait for the derailment part now?" He innocently asked Emeline.
At his words, several fellow commuters glanced at him with concern. Lycari grinned back at them.
"I'm a country boy," he admitted.
The train started up with a bit of a jerk and Lycari was fortunate that his balance was as good as he knew it was because several passengers swayed into him. Being New Yorkers there wasn't a single excuse me from the lot. A couple of teenage girls slipped through the crowd to stand closer to the shifter and whispered between themselves, sending sly smiles his way. Lycari nodded to them in a friendly manner.
Several stops went by and Emeline didn't signal that it was time to get off. Passengers came and went, all of them on their way to various personal errands. Lycari began to feel a bit more at ease on the train. Since Emeline seemed to think that discussion about his life wasn't for the public, he kept quiet and people watched.
A couple of young men stood at one end of the train car and they too were eyeing the passengers, but not with the innocent curiosity that the shifter had. They checked for pockets and handbags and open bags. Almost immediately Lycari zeroed in on them. He prodded Emeline.
"I think we've got trouble," he informed her quietly. He lifted his chin in the direction of the would be thieves, "Right over there."

She snorted. Yeah, hopefully that wasn't going to happen. Her expression turned into a grimace when he talked about the derailing, noticing the other commuters giving them strange looks. Right, that was definitely not a fun topic to be talking about. It was clear he was nervous.
"You're doing good," she reassured him, glancing around at the train. It wasn't too crowded, so that was a relief at least. The ride was going to be a little long–the ride out of Manhattan tended to be a longer one–but she was pretty used to it by now. The train was quiet, and she hated being the loud kind when there was no one talking. Not to mention their topic of discussion wasn't exactly the kind she'd enjoy announcing to everyone.
Taking her phone out, she began to scroll through instagram, glancing to Lycari to check that he was doing okay. A group of giggling girls seemed to have found him interesting, and Emeline had to hide the snort that threatened to leave his mouth. The man seemed oblivious to their interest at least.
She didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, until Lycari poked her in the side, and her eyes shot up. Were they there? She frowned, only glancing to the man. Trouble? She looked over to the couple of guys glancing at people's phones and pockets.
"Don't do anything stupid," she scowled. Pickpockets were pretty normal in the city, but there was no need to cause a fuss before they had done anything. She immediately tucked her phone into the inner pocket of her jacket so it'd be harder to grab. "Just keep your valuables close to you and make sure they don't bump into you or anything. Just...don't make a scene, okay?"

Lycari
He took her words to heart, but he kept his eyes pinned to the pair of teens slouched at the other end of the train car. As he watched them, the duo began to saunter down the aisle. One of them sat beside an older gentleman, who glared at him and moved away. He kept his hand over his pants pocket, a wise old New Yorker! The teen stayed in his seat for a moment or two and then followed his buddy coming up the aisle.
The first teen 'accidentally' managed to knock over a lady's bag of groceries. She gasped and leaned down to gather her items and as the teen helped her, the second one dipped into her handbag and pulled out a phone. He quickly pocketed it and continued on towards Lycari and Emeline. As they approached, the giggly girls moved away, their faces a little scared and their hands clamped onto their bags. This left a woman with a briefcase, a man wearing a t-shirt, Lycari and then Emeline.
The shifter got that slightly predatory look in his eye as the teens moved closer. They seemed interested in the t-shirt clad man's back pocket with its wallet in plain view. Neither boy spared a glance Lycari's way, which was just the way he wanted it. When they started lining themselves up for the dip, Lycari nonchalantly stuck one foot out, just a smidge. This was enough to send one boy, the one with the lady's phone, careening into his erstwhile victim, who promptly turned around with a fierce look in his eye.
As the teen's stumbled over an apology, Lycari did his own pickpocketing. Deft fingers slipped into the boy's pocket and plucked out the phone, which disappeared into the shifter's pants pocket. The kid was none the wiser for it. They both moved off, not brave enough to give thievery another go. At the next stop, they got off.
Lycari wandered over to the grocery bag lady and handed her phone back to her. With wide eyes, she thanked him.
"No problem," Lycari smiled at her.
Then he made his way back to Emeline.
